FFmpeg logs can help you find when a YouTube live stream stalled or encountered an output error, but FFmpeg’s usual progress display is not a packet-loss counter. To diagnose a suspected problem, line up a timestamped FFmpeg log with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, your encoder and local recording, and—when needed—host-level TCP or packet-capture evidence. No single one of those views proves where packets were lost.
What FFmpeg logs can—and cannot—tell you
FFmpeg’s -stats output reports processing progress, such as frame and speed information. It is enabled by default and is not a count of IP packets lost. RTMP publishing uses TCP/IP in FFmpeg’s documented protocol description; FFmpeg’s log is an application-level view of that publishing process, not a measurement of every network segment.
A warning, a slow output rate, dropped frames, buffering, or a connection error can be useful evidence, but none alone establishes that packets were lost on the path to YouTube. The meaning of a message depends on the FFmpeg build, protocol implementation, and failure mode. FFmpeg’s manuals describe log levels and progress reporting, not a universal RTMP packet-loss signature. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Capture a useful, safe FFmpeg log
Increase verbosity for a reproduction
FFmpeg writes default log output to stderr. Use -loglevel verbose for a reproduction; move to debug if the first capture lacks context. The level and time flags add log-level and date/time prefixes. The following is a capture pattern, not a universal encoding recipe:

ffmpeg -loglevel repeat+level+time+verbose -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY' 2>ffmpeg-live.log
Replace INPUT and the output URL locally with your actual source and YouTube publishing URL. Keep the stream key private. Remove it or replace it with a placeholder before sharing a command, report, screenshot, or diagnostic bundle. Global options such as verbosity belong before the input and output they govern; FFmpeg option placement and scope matter.
Use a report when you need a fuller record
The -report option writes the command line and log output to a timestamped report file and implies debug verbosity. Reports may retain sensitive command-line details, so inspect and redact them before sharing. Avoid running high verbosity through a whole event unless you can manage log volume and protect credentials. The FFmpeg documentation describes the logging options.

Build a timeline before interpreting a message
Record the time of the first visible YouTube stream-health change, FFmpeg warnings or errors, output stalls, encoder CPU/load changes, and any change in the local preview or archive. Compare observations from the same time window. An isolated log line without this context is easy to misread.
- If the local preview or archive is also degraded and encoder errors or high CPU load coincide, investigate the source and encoding pipeline first.
- If the local output looks healthy but YouTube reports stream trouble, check outbound capacity and network reliability next. That prioritizes investigation; it does not prove the ISP is at fault.
- If FFmpeg cannot connect, distinguish a setup or configuration failure from evidence of packet loss. A timeout or SSL message is not itself a packet-loss measurement.
Cross-check YouTube’s stream health and the local pipeline
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review the stream-health panel for the status and specific errors or instructions shown during the incident. Compare its timing with the FFmpeg log. YouTube also recommends checking the encoder’s direct view, source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive; if those appear healthy, test the outbound internet connection. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and stream-health metrics guidance.

Each observation has a different scope:
| Evidence source | What it can show | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg verbose/debug log and progress statistics | FFmpeg messages, processing progress, and timing context | A direct count or location of IP packet loss |
| YouTube Live Control Room stream health | Ingestion status and platform-provided errors or instructions | The exact local network segment at fault |
| Encoder preview, CPU observations, and local archive | Source quality, local encoding pressure, and whether a local recording is intact | Whether the outbound route drops packets |
| Upload test, host TCP/interface counters, or packet capture | Upload capacity in the test conditions, or network evidence at the measured host/path and time | A complete diagnosis beyond the measurement point and time window |
Check upload headroom and encoder settings
YouTube’s guidance says, “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” It recommends leaving 20% headroom and counting both primary and backup streams in the total. That is YouTube Help’s operational recommendation; the page does not state a publication year, and the margin cannot guarantee against transient congestion or packet loss. Upload capacity can be lower than download capacity. See YouTube’s network and streaming tips.
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings recommendations for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than borrowing a bitrate for a different configuration. The guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds); recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the current table before changing a live configuration, since platform recommendations can change. YouTube recommends RTMPS and describes it as encrypting data to and through Google’s servers. For a connection or SSL error, verify that the publishing URL is actually RTMPS and that the encoder supports it. These setup checks do not establish packet loss. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Test the path and collect direct network evidence
Compare bandwidth under representative conditions
Run an outbound speed test under conditions similar to the stream, then compare the result with aggregate bitrate, including any backup output. A speed test is a snapshot, not proof that the path will remain clear under the event’s full traffic load. If practical, compare wired Ethernet with Wi-Fi while keeping other conditions as consistent as possible. This can help isolate a local wireless-path issue, but it is not a YouTube-prescribed packet-loss test and does not identify the ISP or route by itself.
Measure at the point where the incident occurs
If you need direct evidence of loss or retransmission, collect operating-system interface and TCP counters or capture packets during a reproduction. Note the host, interfaces, measurement point, and exact time window. These tools show evidence only within what they can observe; they do not automatically identify every segment between your machine and YouTube. Do not infer end-to-end loss solely from viewer buffering, dropped frames, a lower-than-target bitrate, an upload test, or an FFmpeg line.

Common symptoms and what to check next
- “Dropped frames” or a slow progress rate: Determine which stage reports the drop. Check local preview/archive, encoder errors, and CPU load before attributing it to network packets.
- YouTube reports stream trouble while the local archive looks sound: Compare timestamps, verify total bitrate against available upload with YouTube’s recommended headroom, then gather host/network evidence.
- “Connection timed out” or failure to connect: Check the publishing URL, destination, port, network reachability, and encoder configuration. A timeout is a connection symptom, not a packet-loss counter.
- Invalid SSL certificate or RTMPS connection failure: Confirm the URL uses RTMPS and verify encoder support and configuration. Do not treat an SSL setup error as proof that packets were dropped.
- Reports or screenshots contain credentials: Stop sharing them, redact the stream key and other sensitive values, and create a safe copy before sending diagnostic material.
