These checks can point to a useful next step, but they cannot confirm which part is at fault. If the sound problem persists, have the phone inspected.
Start with the receiver opening
- Remove anything covering the top of the display. Take off the case and screen protector, then check that neither is blocking the receiver.
- Look for dirt or debris. Inspect the receiver opening without inserting anything into the grille.
- Clean gently only if needed. Apple’s guidance is to use a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush on the opening. Do not use liquid or probe inside the grille; if debris appears packed in, stop and arrange an inspection rather than trying to dig it out. Apple’s sound-quality troubleshooting steps describe the brush method.
A small soft-bristled electronics cleaning brush is optional for this surface-cleaning step. It is not a substitute for service if the opening cannot be cleared gently.
Compare the receiver with speakerphone
Place a call and note whether the crackling occurs through the earpiece, on speakerphone, or both. Apple recommends trying speakerphone when troubleshooting crackling or static. If the noise is limited to the receiver, that is useful information to give a technician, but it does not by itself prove the receiver has failed.
Check whether the call conditions matter
Crackling or static can be related to network or reception. If the symptom is intermittent, retry the call later or from another location and note whether it changes. A symptom that varies with call conditions is a reason to compare those conditions, not a confirmed diagnosis of a network problem. Apple lists these as troubleshooting checks on its sound-quality support page.

Use the symptoms to choose the next check

These are troubleshooting branches, not a probability ranking. The checks narrow what you can report; they do not identify a failed component.
Arrange service if crackling continues
If the problem persists after removing possible obstructions and comparing call routes and conditions, use Apple’s iPhone repair support flow or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Ask for an inspection and a model-specific estimate before authorizing work. Apple’s displayed out-of-warranty estimate is not personalized until the device is inspected; taxes or shipping may apply, authorized providers can set their own fees, and options depend on location and parts availability.

Apple says repairs by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider use genuine Apple parts and are covered by Apple’s Limited Warranty and AppleCare plans. A non-authorized repair is not an Apple-authorized repair covered by those plans; damage caused by a non-authorized provider is not covered by them, subject to applicable law. Apple has a specific historical service program for certain iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro devices with no sound from the receiver during calls. It is not a general program for every crackling complaint. Apple’s page says the program applied to certain devices manufactured from October 2020 through April 2021, excluded iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max, and required examination. The stated coverage period was three years after the device’s first retail sale; Apple’s page was current as of August 19, 2022.
