Use Adobe Illustrator’s Retype when you have a raster image or outlined text and want automatic font suggestions. Select the artwork, open Window > Retype, choose Find Matching Fonts, and review the visually ranked results. Photoshop has a similar Type > Match Font command. Figma’s documented font tools do something different: they make fonts already installed on your computer available in Figma; they do not identify a typeface from pixels.
Neither Adobe workflow proves the exact original font. They return candidates ranked by visual similarity, so confirm the result against distinctive letters, weights, spacing and the original design license.
What automatic font detection actually does
A font-matching feature analyzes the shapes in visible lettering and proposes typefaces that look similar. It does not recover hidden font metadata from a flattened PNG, JPEG or screenshot. If the lettering was converted to outlines, there is still no font name embedded in the artwork; recognition is based on the outlines’ appearance.
That distinction matters when choosing an application:

| Tool | Input | Result | Selection method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Illustrator Retype | Raster images and outlined text | Matching-font suggestions, ordered by visual closeness | Automatic text-region detection, with a manual marquee fallback |
| Photoshop Match Font | A selected region of an image | Similar-font suggestions | You draw the region with the Rectangular Marquee tool |
| Figma font installer (FigmaAgent) | Fonts installed on the computer | Those fonts become selectable in Figma | No image recognition; availability is based on local installation |
For a screenshot, logo, scanned page or outlined Illustrator object, start with Retype or Match Font. Use Figma’s installer only when the font is known and your problem is getting it to appear in the font menu.
Illustrator: identify a font with Retype
Adobe’s Retype help page, updated October 27, 2025, describes the most complete in-app workflow for both raster images and outlined text.
Step 1: select the artwork
- Open the image or Illustrator document containing the lettering.
- Select the placed image, or select the outlined letterforms. Retype can work with either input.
Step 2: open Retype
Choose Window > Retype. You can also reach Retype from the Type menu, the right-click menu, or the Properties panel’s Quick Actions.
Step 3: run Find Matching Fonts
- In the Retype panel, select Find Matching Fonts.
- Illustrator marks detected text regions with dotted outlines and displays matches for the highlighted region.
- Review the first ten suggestions, which are ordered by visual closeness. Select the control to request five additional suggestions when the first set is not useful.
Step 4: refine the search
- Choose the appropriate script, such as Roman or Japanese.
- Use the source filters to include or exclude Adobe Fonts and fonts installed on the device.
- If a suggested Adobe Fonts typeface is the best fit, add it to Illustrator from the Retype panel, then apply it to editable text.
When Illustrator misses the lettering
Draw a marquee around the text inside Retype and run the search again. Adobe says this manual selection works best for horizontally aligned text set in a single font. Select one line or one consistent style rather than a whole poster containing several faces, rotations or decorative effects.
How to judge a Retype result
Compare more than the overall impression. Inspect lowercase a and g, the terminals on e and c, the shape of numerals, the width of capitals, x-height and the available weight. A close result may still have different kerning or a different italic construction. Retype’s order is a similarity ranking, not a certificate that the original font was found.

Photoshop: use Match Font on an image
Photoshop’s help page, updated February 23, 2026, documents an image-selection workflow.
Step 1: isolate the lettering
- Open the image in Photoshop.
- Choose the Rectangular Marquee tool.
- Drag a rectangle around the text. Keep the selection tight enough that unrelated graphics, shadows and neighboring lines do not influence the match.
Step 2: request suggestions
Choose Type > Match Font. Photoshop displays similar fonts in the Match Font dialog. Select the closest candidate and test it in a new text layer rather than altering the source image.
Step 3: limit the font source
The dialog can hide Adobe Fonts suggestions. Turn that option on when you want to see only fonts already available locally; leave Adobe Fonts enabled when you are willing to add a cloud font to your collection. The filter changes the candidate pool, not the certainty of the match.

Match Font cannot guarantee that a candidate is the exact family used in the artwork, especially when the sample is low-resolution, distorted, partially obscured or a custom logo. Treat the result as a shortlist and verify the characters that distinguish similar families.
Figma: make a known font available, rather than identify pixels
Figma’s cited font documentation covers installation and availability, not image-based recognition. Its installer, also called FigmaAgent, runs in the background and detects fonts installed on your computer.

Figma desktop
The desktop application includes the font installer. Install the typeface in your operating system, restart Figma if it does not appear immediately, and select it from the text toolbar.
Figma in a browser
Browser users must install the Figma font installer to use additional local fonts. After installing a font or the installer, reload the browser tab if the family is missing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ChromeOS and Linux limitation
Figma states that additional fonts are unsupported on ChromeOS and Linux in the cited documentation. Those users are limited to the Google fonts and the available Apple fonts identified on Figma’s help page; installing a desktop font package does not create the same local-font workflow.
Adobe Fonts with Figma
- Add the typeface to the computer through Adobe Fonts first.
- If you use Figma in a browser, make sure the Figma font installer is installed as well.
- Restart Adobe and Figma applications, or reload the browser, if the family is not listed.
- Tell collaborators to install the same font and the same font version. Otherwise their files can show substitutions even when your copy looks correct.
Figma can therefore help you apply a font after you identify it elsewhere, but its installer is not an alternative to Retype or Match Font.
Which workflow should you choose?
| Your starting point | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Photo, screenshot or scan with visible text | Illustrator Retype | It detects text regions automatically and also accepts a manual marquee. |
| Image already open in Photoshop | Photoshop Match Font | The Rectangular Marquee and Type > Match Font path is direct. |
| Outlined Illustrator lettering | Illustrator Retype | Retype explicitly supports outlined text. |
| A font name is known but missing in Figma | Figma font installer | It exposes installed fonts; it does not analyze an image. |
| Several people editing the same Figma file | Install the same family and version for everyone | Figma warns that collaborators need matching local font installations. |
Prepare difficult samples before matching
Recognition quality depends on the pixels or outlines you give the tool. Before running either Adobe command:
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Crop to one line or one type style. Mixing headlines, captions and logos makes a single answer less meaningful.
- Use the highest-resolution source available. A browser thumbnail can erase the details that distinguish two families.
- Straighten rotated or perspective-skewed text when possible; for Retype, a horizontal, single-font marquee is the documented best case.
- Exclude drop shadows, outlines, photographs and decorative marks from the selection.
- Check multiple letters, numerals and punctuation after applying a candidate. One matching word is not enough evidence.
- For a logo or hand-drawn wordmark, expect that no commercial font will be an exact match; the lettering may be custom artwork or modified outlines.
If the source is a web page, capture the page at a readable scale before selecting the text. A clean capture reduces distractions, but it still does not turn a visual suggestion into proof of the original font.

Troubleshooting automatic font matching
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Retype finds no text | The region is too small, angled, crowded or visually complex. | Draw a marquee around one horizontally aligned, single-font line and run Find Matching Fonts again. |
| Retype highlights the wrong area | Several text blocks or graphics are inside the selected image. | Isolate the image or select the intended outlined object before opening Retype. |
| Photoshop suggestions look unrelated | The marquee includes background details, shadows or multiple styles. | Undo the selection, draw a tighter rectangle around clean glyphs, and rerun Type > Match Font. |
| The exact family is absent | The typeface may be custom, modified, unavailable in the selected source filter or too degraded to distinguish. | Compare the closest candidates manually, switch the Adobe Fonts/local-font filter, and inspect distinctive glyphs. |
| A font appears in Figma for you but not a collaborator | The collaborator lacks the same font or version. | Have every editor install the same file/version, then reload Figma. |
| A newly installed font is missing in Figma | The installer or application has not refreshed its font list. | Restart the relevant Adobe and Figma apps, or reload the browser when using Figma on the web. |
| Fonts cannot be added on ChromeOS or Linux | Figma documents that additional fonts are unsupported there. | Use the supported Google or available Apple fonts, or perform identification and editing in a supported desktop environment. |
Or skip the browser setup
If the lettering you need to inspect is on a live web page, ScreenshotNeo can supply a clean image for the Illustrator or Photoshop workflow. It is a screenshot API, not a font-identification engine: you still run Retype or Match Font on the returned image. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the outcome in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
The API returns PNG, JPEG or WebP, and can capture a full page (including lazy-loaded images), one CSS-selected element, a chosen viewport or device preset, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS or JavaScript, hidden selectors, click actions, selector/delay/network-idle waits, blocked ads or resource types, custom headers and cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation. You can also request PDFs, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.

Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Limits, licensing and verification
Font recognition and font use are separate questions. A visual match does not grant permission to use the typeface in a commercial design, redistribute its files or embed it in a product. Once you choose a candidate, check its license and obtain the correct weight and language support.
Adobe’s Retype product page describes Adobe Fonts as containing “more than 30,000” typefaces. The page does not show a publication year for that figure, so treat it as Adobe’s current product-page description rather than a dated market statistic. The number of suggestions shown by Retype is also a display limit (ten initially, with five more available), not a claim that the list contains every possible match.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an automatic matcher identify a custom logo lettering exactly?
Not reliably. Custom lettering, altered glyphs and hand-drawn marks may not correspond to any installed or catalogued font, so use the closest candidate only as a starting point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I match the font before or after converting text to outlines?
Match while editable text is still available when possible. If you only have outlines, Illustrator Retype can analyze them, but you will still need to verify the suggested family and rebuild editable text yourself.
Why does a font look different after I apply the suggested family?
The original may use a different weight, optical size, tracking, kerning, OpenType features or a modified glyph set. Matching the family name alone does not reproduce those design settings.
Can Figma recognize a font from a screenshot?
The cited Figma documentation describes font installation and availability, not screenshot recognition. Use Illustrator Retype or Photoshop Match Font for the image, then install the chosen font so Figma can use it.
