Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You cannot reliably detect an operating-system screenshot with ordinary website JavaScript: there is no standard screenshot-taken event for a page. The browser does expose signals for other purposes—such as document visibility changes and user-approved screen sharing—but neither tells a site that someone saved a screenshot.
Is there a screenshot event in JavaScript?
No. Standard page JavaScript has no general event that fires when a visitor takes a screenshot using an operating-system shortcut or browser interface. A page can observe its own state and, with the user’s permission, request a live display-capture stream; those capabilities do not report that a screenshot was saved. See MDN’s Screen Capture API documentation.
This distinction is also a security boundary: a website should not promise reliable detection of a visitor’s screenshots. Browser UI, operating-system shortcuts, extensions, accessibility tools, and external cameras are outside the ordinary page event model.
Why visibility and keyboard events are not proof
visibilitychange reports document state
The Page Visibility API reports when a document becomes visible or hidden. MDN lists ordinary causes such as switching tabs, navigating, minimizing or closing the browser, and switching apps on mobile. The event does not identify the cause, so treating it as a screenshot signal creates false positives. See MDN’s visibilitychange reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
document.addEventListener("visibilitychange", () => {
if (document.visibilityState === "hidden") {
// Pause nonessential work or record a lifecycle transition.
// This does not prove that a screenshot was taken.
}
});
Use this event for lifecycle behavior—such as pausing animations or background work—not to label a visitor as having captured the page.
Keyboard listeners only see keys delivered to the page
A page can listen for keyboard input that reaches it, but that is not a portable way to observe browser-chrome or operating-system screenshot shortcuts. Even if a particular key combination is detected in one environment, that does not establish that an image was created; other capture methods may not send any key event to the page.

What getDisplayMedia() does—and does not do
navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia() asks the user to select a screen, window, or tab and, after confirmation, returns a live MediaStream. It is intended for explicit screen sharing, recording, or WebRTC features—not passive screenshot detection. The browser presents a selection interface, and the user agent displays an indicator while capture is active. Screen-sharing sources are not exposed through enumerateDevices(). See MDN’s getDisplayMedia reference and Screen Capture API overview.
If your product genuinely needs screen sharing, request it in response to a clear user action and handle cancellation, rejection, and unsupported browsers. MDN marks Screen Capture API availability as limited; check compatibility for the browsers you support rather than assuming it works everywhere.

async function startScreenShare() {
if (!navigator.mediaDevices?.getDisplayMedia) {
throw new Error("Screen sharing is not supported in this browser.");
}
try {
const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({
video: true,
audio: false
});
// Use the stream for an explicit sharing or recording feature.
// It does not indicate that a screenshot was saved.
return stream;
} catch (error) {
// The user may cancel, or the request may fail or be denied.
console.error("Screen sharing did not start:", error);
return null;
}
}
shareButton.addEventListener("click", async () => {
const stream = await startScreenShare();
if (stream) {
previewVideo.srcObject = stream;
}
});
Keep the request tied to an understandable user action such as a Share screen button. Do not use it as a covert monitoring workaround: it requires the user to choose what to share and does not report a saved screenshot.
How the available approaches compare
| Approach | What it establishes | User involvement | Appropriate use |
|---|---|---|---|
visibilitychange |
The document became visible or hidden; not why | No capture prompt | Pause or resume page work; handle lifecycle |
getDisplayMedia() |
A user-selected display stream is being shared or captured | Browser picker and user confirmation | Explicit screen sharing or recording |
Neither approach proves that a visitor took an operating-system screenshot.

Browser screenshot tools do not notify the page
Firefox’s screenshot help describes capturing a selected region, a highlighted portion, the full page, or the visible area, then copying or downloading the result. That browser feature does not establish that the captured page receives a notification. Browser-owned tools and privileged extensions have different capabilities from ordinary scripts running in a page. See Mozilla Support’s Firefox screenshot guide.

If you need a screenshot of a web page for your own workflow, rather than detecting a visitor’s screenshot, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; for example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a website detect when I take a screenshot?
Not reliably through standard JavaScript running in an ordinary web page. Browser and operating-system screenshot tools do not provide a general screenshot event to the page.
Does getDisplayMedia() tell a site when someone screenshots?
No. It requests a user-selected live display stream for sharing or recording; it does not report that a screenshot file was saved.
