Yes, an AI worm can spread through email, repositories, and APIs when an agent treats attacker-controlled content as instructions and has permission to send, write, publish, or call other tools. The practical defense is layered: mark retrieved content as untrusted, filter prompt-injection patterns, isolate each agent with a short-lived least-privilege identity, put an independent policy gateway in front of every tool, require approval for high-impact actions, and keep immutable logs that let you trace propagation.

When an agent starts sending or publishing on its own, disable outbound actions first. Then revoke or rotate its credentials, quarantine the agent and connectors, preserve evidence, and inspect recent messages, commits, package releases, and API calls before restoring service.

What an AI worm is and why it can spread

An AI worm is a self-replicating prompt or agent payload. It arrives inside content an AI system is already expected to process—such as an email, attachment, issue, README, code comment, package metadata, document, or API response. The content contains instructions aimed at the model. If the model follows those instructions while performing a legitimate task, it can copy the payload into an outbound message or tool action. The next agent or workflow reads that copy and repeats the cycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This differs from a conventional worm in an important way: the payload is often text interpreted by a model rather than machine code exploiting a memory or software vulnerability. The attack still has the same operational shape—initial access, execution, replication, and propagation—but the model’s language-following behavior is the propagation mechanism.

The four-stage chain

  1. Ingress: an agent retrieves external content from email, a repository, a ticket, a document store, or an API.
  2. Instruction confusion: malicious text is presented in a context where the model mistakes it for a higher-priority task instruction.
  3. Excessive action: the agent uses tools that let it send messages, modify files, create pull requests, publish packages, or call APIs.
  4. Replication: the payload is copied into the outbound content, which becomes input to another agent or workflow.

A system does not need every capability to be dangerous. Read access plus an outbound email tool can leak data; repository write access can alter a workflow; package-registry credentials can publish a poisoned version. The combination of untrusted input, model authority, and unchecked side effects creates the worm-like risk.

What has actually been demonstrated

Morris-II and RAG email assistants (2024)

Cornell and Technion researchers named this pattern Morris-II. Their 2024 paper describes how communication between generative-AI applications that rely on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) can produce a “computer worm-like chain reaction.” Their evaluation focused on confidential-data extraction in generative-AI email assistants. The lesson is architectural: when one model’s output becomes another model’s retrieved context, a malicious instruction can cross the trust boundary without exploiting traditional software.

OpenAI’s controlled evaluation (2026)

OpenAI’s September 2026 report described an “AI-version of a worm attack” using a self-replicating prompt injection. In its clearest email example, the injection tells an agent to copy itself into any email it sends. OpenAI reported no impact outside simulated tool calls in training and evaluation. That qualification matters: the report demonstrates a failure mode under controlled conditions, not a measured outbreak in production systems.

Shai-Hulud and the software-supply-chain analogy

CISA’s 2025 Shai-Hulud alert illustrates a separate, conventional malware and credential-propagation path. More than 500 npm packages were compromised; the campaign targeted GitHub personal-access tokens and cloud API keys, uploaded credentials to a public repository, and published compromised package versions through the npm API. This is not evidence that Morris-II infected npm. It is a warning that AI-assisted development workflows can combine with ordinary supply-chain malware: an agent with access to a developer account may make the blast radius larger, while poisoned packages can in turn become content that other agents process.

There is no established production prevalence rate, total infection count, or benchmark detection percentage for AI worms in the cited evidence. Treat claims of a widespread active outbreak as unverified unless they include specific incident data.

Where an AI worm can enter and propagate

Channel Typical untrusted content Possible propagation action High-value evidence to retain
Email Body text, HTML, signatures, quoted replies, attachments, calendar notes Forwarding the injection, emailing data, adding recipients, creating a ticket Raw message, sender, headers, attachment hashes, model context, recipient list
Code repositories README files, issues, pull-request descriptions, code comments, generated files Commit, pull request, workflow edit, issue comment, branch creation Commit and diff, author identity, workflow result, branch protection decision
Packages and registries Package metadata, install scripts, release notes, dependencies Install, release, version publication, dependency update Package tarball hash, registry account, publish token, dependency graph
APIs and webhooks JSON fields, error messages, ticket text, webhook payloads Downstream API call, record update, webhook fan-out, data export Request and response, method, URL, payload classification, authentication scope
Documents and knowledge bases Office files, PDFs, OCR text, wiki pages, embedded links Copying text into an answer, sending a report, updating a knowledge item Original file, parser output, provenance label, retrieval query and ranking

Any connector that turns external text into model context belongs in the untrusted-input boundary. “Internal” is not a sufficient trust label: a compromised account can place hostile instructions in an internal repository or shared mailbox.

How to detect an AI worm

1. Detect instruction-like text in retrieved data

Inspect the content before it reaches the model. Microsoft recommends filtering or stripping HTML and Markdown elements that can carry instructions and using content filters or Prompt Shields before the model sees retrieved material. Look for phrases that address the assistant directly, attempt to override prior instructions, request secrecy, or tell the system to copy text into future outputs. Detection should be content-aware but not dependent on one exact phrase; a worm can paraphrase itself on every iteration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store the original bytes or a tamper-evident hash, the parser’s extracted text, the source identifier, and the time of retrieval. This provenance lets responders distinguish an instruction that entered through an email from one introduced by a later model output.

2. Detect replication, not just suspicious wording

Compare outbound content with recently ingested external content. Alert when an agent copies unusual instruction-like text into:

  • new email messages or replies;
  • pull requests, commits, issues, or code comments;
  • package metadata, release notes, or published artifacts;
  • API payloads, webhook events, or ticket updates.

Use similarity, exact-match, and structural comparisons. Preserve both the matched source and the outbound destination. A changing payload can evade exact matching, so monitor repeated behavioral features—such as an instruction to replicate, a request to access secrets, or an attempt to contact a new domain—alongside text similarity.

3. Log every tool call with its approval state

For each action, record the exact tool name, arguments, authenticated identity, destination, data classification, policy decision, and whether a human approved it. A read-only agent attempting a send, write, publish, credential-access, or cross-repository operation should generate an alert and normally be denied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not log only a natural-language summary. Keep the raw recipient list, repository and branch, complete diff, package contents, API method and endpoint, and data selected for transmission. Those details are required to determine what the agent actually did.

4. Watch credential and supply-chain indicators

Monitor for new or unusual use of GitHub tokens, cloud keys, package-registry credentials, and service-account identities. Alert on repository creation, unexpected CI workflow changes, secret-file access, package publication, public uploads, and outbound transfers to unfamiliar destinations. CISA’s Shai-Hulud alert shows why repository tokens, cloud credentials, and package registries should be correlated in one detection story rather than handled by separate teams.

5. Baseline behavior and fan-out

Track normal rates for recipients, repositories, API calls, model-tool hops, data volume, and spend. A sudden increase in fan-out is a useful containment trigger even when the payload text changes each time. Set limits per agent and per identity, such as maximum recipients per message, repositories touched per run, package versions published per day, and outbound bytes. The specific thresholds must come from the workflow’s normal behavior; the cited sources do not establish universal numbers.

6. Correlate across the chain

Join events by agent identity, connector, token, source object, and time window. A useful sequence is: hostile text retrieved, model output contains a replication instruction, policy gateway receives a send or write request, approval is absent or mismatched, and a second workflow ingests the resulting content. Correlation turns isolated “odd email” and “odd commit” alerts into evidence of propagation.

Build a layered prevention architecture

Prompt filtering is valuable but insufficient. A successful injection can still exploit broad tool permissions, so controls must act at multiple boundaries.

Control location What it constrains Fail-closed expectation Human visibility Forensic value
Input filter and provenance layer Content, markup, instruction-like patterns, source trust Reject or quarantine content when scanning fails Show flagged excerpts and source Original content, parser output, classification
Model boundary Separation of instructions from data and context length Do not silently pass unlabelled external text as instructions Expose retrieved sources in the review view Prompt and retrieval snapshot
Tool-policy gateway Identity, action type, destination, data volume, approval Deny when policy or approval state is missing Show the raw action before execution Arguments, decision, policy version
Repository and CI controls Branches, workflows, pull requests, package publication Require review before agent-created changes run or publish Show complete diff and workflow changes Commits, reviews, checks, artifact hashes
Network and egress layer Domains, methods, ports, rate, destination Block unallowlisted destinations and excessive fan-out Show destination and payload class DNS, proxy, request and response logs

Put an independent policy gateway between the model and tools

Do not let a system prompt authorize email, repository writes, package publication, or privileged API calls. OWASP’s agent-security guidance recommends infrastructure-layer authorization, scoped identities, and explicit approval for escalation. The model can propose an action; a separate policy service or execution component should validate scope, privilege, destination, data classification, and approval state before execution.

Use an allowlist of tools and commands. A mail-sending tool should accept only approved accounts and domains; a repository tool should restrict organizations, repositories, branches, and operations; a package tool should separate download from publish permissions. Deny unknown tools rather than attempting to infer whether they are safe.

Use short-lived, least-privilege identities

Give each agent a dedicated identity with the minimum OAuth scopes and repository permissions required for one workflow. Prefer short-lived credentials that expire after the run. Separate read and write identities, and separate development, staging, and production accounts. Keep secrets out of prompts, model context, and agent-readable files; explicitly deny access to .env files, private keys, credential stores, and token caches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rotation must be practical: maintain an inventory showing which agent, connector, job, and owner used each token. If an agent can access a credential but does not need it for its task, remove that access instead of relying on a model instruction not to use it.

Label and sanitize external content

Represent retrieved material as data with provenance metadata, not as an undifferentiated block of instructions. Preserve the source, author, timestamp, and trust classification. Strip or neutralize active HTML and Markdown elements where they are not required. Run prompt-injection classifiers or Prompt Shields before retrieval results enter the model context, and quarantine high-risk items for review.

Filtering should not modify evidence irreversibly. Keep the original object separately so an investigator can see exactly what the attacker supplied.

Sandbox code and outbound networking

Run generated or retrieved code in an isolated environment with no implicit access to developer credentials, host files, or production networks. Allowlist commands, package registries, domains, and repositories. Block unrestricted pushes, package publication, and access to secret locations. Treat installation scripts and build steps as executable behavior, not harmless metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Require approval for high-impact actions

Human approval should be required for sending external email, changing repository workflows, merging or releasing code, publishing packages, accessing secrets, exporting sensitive data, and calling privileged APIs. Microsoft describes approval before Copilot sends email; OWASP identifies human approval as a control for excessive agency.

The approval screen must show the raw recipient list, repository and branch, complete diff, package contents, API method and destination, and the data being sent. Approving a summary such as “send response” is not meaningful if the reviewer cannot inspect the actual payload.

Make repository and CI workflows fail closed

Do not run CI automatically on agent-created changes until a reviewer validates the diff and workflow files. GitHub documents this control for Copilot-generated pull requests. Protect workflow directories and release configuration separately, because a small change to CI can grant an attacker credentials or bypass later review. Require independent checks for dependency changes, secret access, and package publication.

What to do when an agent starts sending or publishing

Speed matters more than proving the exact payload before containment. Use this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disable outbound actions. Turn off the agent’s send, write, publish, webhook, and privileged API tools at the policy gateway. If no gateway exists, revoke the connector or disable the service account.
  2. Stop fan-out. Pause scheduled jobs, queue consumers, repository automations, and workflows that could ingest the agent’s output and pass it onward.
  3. Revoke and rotate credentials. Invalidate the agent identity, OAuth tokens, GitHub tokens, cloud keys, package-registry credentials, and webhook secrets it could have accessed. Rotate credentials from a clean administrative session.
  4. Quarantine the agent and connector. Preserve the runtime, prompt configuration, retrieved context, tool policy, and network state. Do not delete the account or workspace before collecting evidence.
  5. Block known destinations and artifacts. Block malicious domains, email addresses, package versions, repository URLs, and hashes identified during triage. Coordinate blocks with registry and hosting owners where appropriate.
  6. Preserve a timeline. Export immutable logs for retrievals, model outputs, tool arguments, approvals, identity use, network requests, commits, messages, and package releases.
  7. Scope the blast radius. Search for the payload and its variants in sent mail, drafts, issue comments, pull requests, commits, package metadata, API logs, and downstream agent inputs. Identify every identity and repository touched.
  8. Inspect credentials and data exposure. Determine which secrets, personal data, source code, or customer records were available to the agent or included in outbound payloads. Treat accessed credentials as compromised even if no misuse is yet visible.
  9. Restore known-good artifacts. Revert unauthorized commits, remove compromised package versions according to registry procedures, restore workflow files, and rebuild from verified source. Do not restore by copying an unreviewed branch or package.
  10. Re-enable gradually. Test the workflow with outbound tools disabled, then in a sandbox, then with narrow scopes and mandatory approval. Add the observed payload and behavior to regression and detection tests.

Investigation questions for each propagation path

Email

  • Which mailbox or connector first retrieved the injection?
  • Did the agent copy text verbatim, paraphrase it, or hide it in HTML or a signature?
  • Which recipients received the message, and did any include other automated agents?
  • What attachments, links, or sensitive data were included?

Repositories and CI

  • Which commit, pull request, issue, or README contains the payload?
  • Did the change alter workflow files, dependency manifests, release scripts, or secret-handling code?
  • Which checks ran automatically, and what credentials were available to them?
  • Were packages built or published from the affected commit?

APIs and webhooks

  • Which method, endpoint, identity, and payload were used?
  • Did a webhook trigger another agent or workflow?
  • Were records changed, exported, or copied into a new system?
  • Did retries or queue fan-out multiply the requests?

Recovery, testing, and long-term hardening

Verify the environment before reopening access

Rebuild agent runtimes and connectors from known-good images or packages. Review policy configuration, tool schemas, allowlists, repository protections, and CI permissions. Confirm that secrets are absent from prompts, context stores, logs, and temporary files. Test token revocation and expiry rather than assuming they work.

Run adversarial propagation tests

In a non-production environment, place a harmless marker instruction in an email, issue, README, and API response. Verify that the system labels it as untrusted, blocks unauthorized tool calls, shows a human-readable approval request for allowed high-impact actions, and records complete provenance. Test paraphrased and encoded variants, HTML and Markdown, attachments, retries, and multi-agent handoffs.

Measure controls by outcomes

Useful metrics include the percentage of external objects with provenance labels, blocked tool calls, denied actions lacking approval, time to revoke a compromised identity, time to identify all recipients or repositories, and the completeness of raw-action logs. These are operational measures, not claims about a universal AI-worm detection rate.

Assign ownership

Define who can disable an agent, revoke credentials, block a package, approve restoration, and notify affected owners. Keep an on-call contact for each connector and repository. A control that no one can activate during an incident is not a containment control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical checklists

Before deploying an agent

  • External content is labelled untrusted and separated from system instructions.
  • HTML, Markdown, attachments, and parser output are filtered or isolated.
  • The agent has a dedicated short-lived identity with minimum scopes.
  • Secrets and credential paths are denied.
  • Every tool call passes through an independent policy gateway.
  • High-impact actions require approval showing the raw action.
  • Code execution and network egress are sandboxed and allowlisted.
  • Repository and CI changes fail closed until reviewed.
  • Immutable logs capture provenance, outputs, arguments, decisions, and approvals.
  • Disable, revoke, quarantine, and restore procedures have been tested.

During normal operation

  • Baseline recipients, repositories, API calls, fan-out, data volume, and cost.
  • Alert on replication-like text and unusual outbound destinations.
  • Review denied and escalated tool calls, not just successful actions.
  • Expire and rotate credentials on schedule and after role changes.
  • Recheck package, workflow, and dependency changes independently.

The bottom line

An AI worm becomes dangerous when untrusted content can steer a model and the model can act without an independent authorization check. Treat every retrieved message, repository object, package, and API response as data; constrain identities and destinations; require approval for consequential actions; and log enough detail to reconstruct the chain. If propagation is suspected, cut outbound actions and rotate credentials before investigating. This layered design limits both the chance of replication and the damage if a prompt injection succeeds.
