An “application update conflict” can mean three different things: an installed app refuses a new package, a dependency solver cannot choose compatible versions, or a server rejects or merges changes made from stale app data. The fix depends on which layer is failing. Start with the exact error and where it occurs; do not begin by uninstalling the app, deleting its data, forcing a downgrade, or overriding a dependency.
First identify what kind of update conflict you have
Record the full error text or code, the app and its current and target versions, the operating system, where the update came from, and what you were doing when it failed. The timing usually identifies the layer:
- During installation: the operating system or installer may reject the package because of identity, signing, publisher, ownership, architecture, or version rules.
- During a build or dependency update: packages in the dependency tree may require incompatible versions of a shared package.
- During synchronization or a save: the server may have changed since the client last read the record, making the submitted write stale.
Keep a copy of the error and preserve data or configuration that may be difficult to recover before making changes. The checks below apply to specific ecosystems; they are not universal rules for every operating system, store, or sync service.
If an installed app will not accept an update
Check the package’s identity and update policy before trying another store or removing the installed app. A package can be newer and still fail to update if it is not recognized as a continuation of the installed app.

Android: application ID, signing, and version code
Android’s update requirements include a matching application ID, a signing certificate that matches the installed app or a valid proof-of-rotation, and an incoming version code at least as high as the installed version code. Some updates may also require user approval. Check these details first when the installer reports that an update is incompatible or cannot be installed.
Different stores can update the same Android app when they distribute builds with the same application ID and signing keys. As a result, disabling updates in one store does not necessarily prevent another store from supplying an update. If store-specific app content must not cross over, Android’s guidance describes using different application IDs or signing keys. Android 14 also supports update ownership: when ownership is configured, an installer other than the owning store may need to handle a pending user-approval state.
Do not uninstall casually. Android’s guidance says that moving between stores when the app lacks a matching application ID or signing key requires uninstalling and reinstalling; uninstalling deletes the app’s associated data. Back up or sync anything important before considering that route.

Windows MSIX: package family and version direction
For MSIX, check that the incoming package has the same package family as the installed package. Microsoft defines the family using the package name and publisher. In the normal update path, the incoming version must be higher than the installed version. Some deployment contexts support an explicit downgrade override, but a lower version is not an ordinary update.

Architecture changes may be possible when the operating system supports the package architecture. Moving between a bundle and a non-bundle package has direction-specific rules, so check the relevant deployment behavior rather than assuming either transition is interchangeable.
Windows Installer (MSI): determine whether a file was replaced
An MSI update can run successfully without replacing every existing file. Windows Installer uses component key-file versioning rules and considers file version, date, and language when deciding whether to install or replace files. If one file remains unchanged, inspect a verbose installer log to see the installer’s decision and any reported errors.

Microsoft advises against concurrent or nested installations in shipping products. If several packages need to be installed, its guidance recommends sequencing them through a setup application rather than launching overlapping installations.
If a dependency update or build reports incompatible versions
A dependency conflict often involves two direct packages that impose incompatible constraints on the same transitive package. For example, one package may require a shared dependency in the 1.x range while another requires 2.x, leaving the solver no version that satisfies both.
- Find the shared package and constraints. Read the solver’s explanation for the package it cannot resolve and the exact version ranges involved.
- Trace each constraint to its parent. Work upward through the dependency tree to identify which direct dependencies introduced the conflicting requirements.
- Check for compatible releases. In Flutter/Dart,
flutter pub outdatedshows newer versions, andflutter pub upgradeupgrades packages allowed by the current constraints. - Review major-version changes before adopting them. A major upgrade may require code changes. Android Studio’s dependency-upgrade guidance emphasizes assessing risk and testing because upgrades can break an application unexpectedly.
- Inspect the resolved state and test. In a Flutter/Dart application project,
pubspec.lockrecords the exact resolved direct and transitive versions. Commit it so developers and build servers use the same dependency set, then run relevant build and integration tests.
A dependency override can make a solver complete without making the chosen version compatible with the packages that use it. Treat an override as a deliberate compatibility decision, not a default repair; verify the affected APIs and runtime behavior.

If changes conflict while app data synchronizes
In version-based optimistic concurrency, a client submits a change based on the version it previously read. If the server record has since changed, the service can detect the stale version and reject the write. In AWS AppSync’s documented optimistic concurrency behavior, the rejected client receives the latest server item and is expected to reconcile locally before retrying with the updated version.
AWS AppSync documents three conflict handlers: optimistic concurrency, Automerge, and a Lambda handler. Their behavior differs, and none is a universal best choice:
| Approach | What happens on conflict | What the application must consider |
|---|---|---|
| Optimistic concurrency | The stale request is rejected and the latest server item is returned. | The client must reconcile its change with the current item and retry using its updated version. |
| Automerge | The service merges according to data-type rules. | Check that those rules preserve the meaning of each field and do not create invalid or duplicate data. |
| Lambda handler | A custom handler can apply application-specific conflict logic. | Define and test the business rules for the situations the application needs to resolve. |
In the AWS AppSync Automerge behavior documented for these conflicts, a conflicting scalar keeps the server value and the incoming scalar is rejected; lists concatenate incoming values, including duplicates; sets are combined without duplicates; new fields and null-valued fields can be merged; and map properties follow the rules recursively. These are AppSync-specific semantics, not a promise that every synchronization product merges data this way.

Consider what each field represents before enabling automatic merging. Appending a list can duplicate a logical event; keeping the server’s scalar can discard a user’s intended edit. If those outcomes are wrong for your data, use application-specific conflict handling and test the races that matter to the domain.
A safe resolution workflow
- Capture the failure. Save the exact message or code and note whether it occurs during installation, dependency resolution or a build, or synchronized data writes.
- Record the context. Note the app or package identity, current and target versions, operating system, distribution source, and installer or package manager involved.
- Apply the matching checks. For an install, check identity, signing or publisher, version direction, ownership, and architecture. For an MSI that ran but skipped a file, review the verbose log. For a dependency failure, trace constraints to their direct dependencies. For a stale write, fetch the current server item and reconcile against it.
- Protect user data. Back up or sync important data before uninstalling or changing installation sources. Avoid silently replacing server state with a change based on an older version.
- Retry and verify. Confirm that the intended app version, resolved dependency set, or server state is active. After dependency changes, run relevant build and integration tests.
Choose a conflict strategy by its consequences
For synchronized writes, compare strategies by whether they reject or automatically merge a conflict, whether clients must reconcile and retry, whether field-level merge rules preserve the data’s meaning, and whether custom business logic is available. AWS AppSync documents different behaviors across its handlers, but that documentation does not establish a universal performance or correctness ranking.
For package updates, compare identity and signing compatibility, version direction, update ownership and source predictability, data preservation, and downgrade policy. Android and MSIX have ecosystem-specific requirements; do not apply those rules to another operating system or store without checking its documentation.
