If browser automation lands on a challenge, access-denied page, unexpected redirect, or unfamiliar content, treat it as a signal to investigate—not proof of exactly what detected the run. Check both the rendered page and the network results, compare controlled runs, then use an approved test path. For sites you do not control, stop retries and ask for authorized access rather than trying to evade the block.
What an anti-bot response can look like
Bot-management systems can combine request, session, browser, and behavioral signals. Cloudflare documents heuristic checks, JavaScript detections, machine-learning scoring, and anomaly detection, with engines available according to plan. It explains: “Cloudflare uses multiple detection engines because different bot types require different detection strategies.” Cloudflare’s bot detection engines documentation describes those approaches; its challenge documentation covers challenge behavior.
Possible clues include a challenge page, access-denied message, redirect to an unexpected URL, or page content that differs from what the test expects. None identifies the cause conclusively. A challenge does not prove malicious intent, nor does it establish that a particular automation framework was detected.
How to diagnose a challenge or unexpected page
1. Check what actually rendered
Assert on meaningful page landmarks—such as the expected heading, record, or primary control—not just on navigation completion. Save a screenshot and inspect the visible page when an assertion fails. A browser can finish navigating to an intermediate, challenge, or denial page without reaching the intended application state.

2. Inspect network results
Record response status, redirects, failed requests, and relevant response content. Distinguish an HTTP error response from a transport failure: Playwright notes that a 404 or 503 is still an HTTP response, while a request failure means no HTTP response was received. See Playwright’s Request API documentation.
Correlate the response with the final URL and rendered content. A successful HTTP response alone does not show that the expected application page loaded.

3. Compare controlled runs
Keep the browser version, test account, environment, and session setup stable. Note whether the symptom follows a particular route, account, network condition, or browser configuration. Cloudflare’s documentation describes multiple possible signals; it does not provide a universal checklist that can identify every vendor’s decision.
4. Preserve evidence and avoid blind retries
Keep screenshots, response details, timestamps, and relevant request metadata from the first failure. Repeated retries can obscure the initial symptom and add unnecessary traffic. Capture enough context to let the application or security owner investigate.

Browser-side conditions that can affect challenges
Some challenge behavior depends on browser-side signals. Cloudflare documents JavaScript injection and challenge behavior, and notes that browser extensions changing user-agent values or APIs such as Canvas and WebGL may be relevant. Its JavaScript-detection guidance also identifies network problems, ad blockers, and disabled JavaScript as legitimate reasons detection may not pass: Cloudflare JavaScript detections.
For an authorized test, check that JavaScript is enabled and review extensions, network conditions, and browser configuration before attributing a failure to automation detection. Do not infer from a challenge alone which signal or product rule caused it.

Choose a handling path based on authorization and control
Your application or an explicitly authorized test environment
- Prefer staging or a test configuration designed for automation. Isolate test storage state and verify the behavior users actually see.
- Mock third-party services that are not part of the system under test. Playwright recommends testing dependencies you control and documents using its network API to provide a response for an external dependency: Playwright test best practices and Playwright network handling.
- If your organization operates the bot-management layer, coordinate with its security or site reliability owner. Review the relevant logs and agree on a documented, narrowly scoped test path or policy. Cloudflare documents bot signals and configurable challenge behavior, but available settings depend on plan.
A third-party site
If a site you do not control presents a challenge or blocks the run, stop automated retries. Consult its published API or access policy, or contact support for an approved route. Do not attempt to defeat the challenge, disguise the automation, or rotate identities to get around the site’s controls.
Capture evidence without confusing it with a bypass
A screenshot can help document what the browser displayed, but it does not diagnose the detector or grant permission to access a protected site. For authorized testing, capture the result and relevant network details through your test setup; keep the run within the site’s access rules.

For a one-request screenshot of a page you are permitted to access, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request for a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its consent-banner and popup handling is a capture feature, not a way to bypass bot checks or access restrictions.

For an authorized page, call the API directly. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Does an anti-bot challenge prove the site detected Playwright or another automation framework?
No. A challenge is a clue, not proof of which signal or detector caused it.
Should I keep retrying after a third-party site blocks my automated browser?
No. Stop retries and seek an approved API, access route, or support channel.
