Database schema drift is a mismatch between the schema an environment is expected to have and the schema it actually has. Detect it by comparing the live database with a clearly chosen reference—such as migration history, a changelog, or a known-good environment—then review the object-level differences before changing either the database or its recorded migration plan.

“Fixing” drift does not always mean reverting the database. If a change was intentional, record it in the migration workflow and propagate it through other environments. If it was accidental, restore the expected state through a reviewed, tested change. This guide concerns database schemas across environments, not schema drift in data pipelines or infrastructure.

What schema drift means

Prisma describes schema drift as a difference between the expected database schema and what is in migration history. In practice, teams use different references for “expected”: migration files, a declarative schema, a changelog, a previous snapshot, or another environment designated as correct. See Prisma’s migration mental model.

A live database can drift when someone changes it outside the normal migration process, when a deployment is incomplete, or when environments have followed different change histories. A comparison tells you that states differ; by itself, it does not tell you which state is authoritative or whether a difference is a problem.

Choose the reference before comparing

State which source defines the intended schema before running a check. Comparing two databases can reveal differences without proving which one is correct, especially if they were created from different migration histories. Likewise, a comparison against migration files is only as useful as the accuracy and feature coverage of that tool’s representation of the database.

  • Migration history: Compare the live database with the migrations intended to have been applied.
  • Changelog or declarative schema: Compare the database with the changes or desired state recorded by that system.
  • Previous state: Compare current state with a stored snapshot or prior version to identify changes over time.
  • Reference environment: Compare a target database with a known-good environment, after verifying that the reference is the intended authority.

How the tools detect drift

Detection models differ. Some tools compare a database with recorded migration state; others compare environments or current and previous states. The command and environment matter: a check documented for development should not be assumed to run during production deployment.

Tool Documented comparison model Important distinction
Prisma Migrate prisma migrate dev replays migration history in a temporary shadow database, introspects the result, and compares it with the development database. Prisma documents the shadow database workflow. The shadow database is used by migrate dev, not production-focused migrate deploy. migrate diff compares only database features it supports. See Prisma’s diff documentation.
Liquibase Can compare current state with a prior state or compare two databases. diff describes differences; diff-changelog can generate changesets. See Liquibase drift detection and Liquibase diff. Generated changesets and reports still require review. Confirm the objects and database features covered in your particular setup.
Flyway Drift analysis checks a target environment for unexpected changes since Flyway last deployed. See Flyway’s drift analysis documentation. Flyway’s guidance emphasizes incorporating changes into earlier development and testing environments; a target finding is not itself a repair plan.

A practical detection workflow

  1. Identify the target and authority. Record which environment is being checked and whether its expected state comes from migrations, a changelog, a previous snapshot, or a reference database.
  2. Run the documented comparison in a safe workflow. Use the tool’s drift or diff feature with the intended target and reference. For example, Prisma’s development command compares the development database against migration history through a shadow database; do not treat production migrate deploy as the same check.
  3. Inspect the object-level result. Determine which objects were added, removed, or altered. Check whether each difference is intentional, manually introduced, or related to a migration that did not reach every environment.
  4. Check comparison coverage. Confirm that the tool supports the database features and object types relevant to your system. Prisma explicitly limits migrate diff to supported features; a clean result is not a universal guarantee that every aspect of a database was compared.
  5. Decide which state is authoritative. Establish whether the database should be brought back to its recorded state or the migration plan should be updated to preserve an intentional change.

How to fix drift without creating a new problem

There are two valid outcomes: restore the database to the expected state, or update the recorded change history so it accurately represents an intentional database change. Choose based on the reason for the mismatch and the state the team has agreed to preserve—not simply on whichever side a diff labels as different.

If the database change was intentional

Represent the change in the migration workflow, review it, and propagate that reviewed migration or changeset through the normal deployment process. Where the schema change first appeared in a later environment, make sure the recorded plan can reproduce the intended state in earlier environments too. Liquibase documents generating missing changesets or marking changesets as run; whether either action is appropriate depends on what actually happened and what your deployment records show.

If the database change was accidental

Prepare a corrective migration that restores the intended schema, then review the generated DDL and its effects before applying it. Prisma documents generating a diff to move a database toward migration history or a schema and applying SQL with db execute. Treat generated SQL as a proposal to inspect and test—not a blanket instruction to run it against production.

Test and promote the correction

  1. Review the proposed DDL or changeset for destructive operations, dependencies, and any effects on existing data.
  2. Test it against a representative non-production database and verify that the resulting schema matches the chosen reference.
  3. Promote the reviewed change through the ordinary deployment process rather than making an untracked production edit.
  4. Run the comparison again after the change to verify the intended reconciliation.

Prisma notes that drift in development can lead to a reset prompt. That development behavior should not be turned into advice to reset a production database; assess data loss and operational impact before choosing any repair.

Prevent drift from recurring

  • Make migration files or the chosen changelog the routine route for schema changes, rather than relying on manual edits to live environments.
  • Run appropriate comparisons in development or CI so unexpected differences are visible before release.
  • Include environment comparison in promotion and release review, using the tool’s documented behavior for that environment.
  • Keep the chosen source of truth explicit, and investigate differences rather than automatically accepting or reverting them.

Liquibase describes its Drift Reports as integrable with CI/CD. The right CI setup, credentials, and object coverage depend on the team’s database and configuration.
