The reliable test is not whether a message sounds polished, a caller sounds familiar, or a video looks realistic. Verify the person and the request through a channel you already trust. Generative AI can now produce convincing writing, cloned voices, and synthetic faces, so grammar, caller ID, confidence, and visual realism are weak evidence on their own.

Why familiar signals no longer prove a message is genuine

Scammers use generative AI to write believable social-engineering messages, personalize spear-phishing, imitate a person’s voice, and create realistic images or video. The FBI warned in 2025 that AI-generated content has advanced to the point that it is often difficult to identify. The FTC’s chair, Lina M. Khan, likewise said in 2024 that fraudsters are using AI tools to impersonate people “with eerie precision and at a much wider scale.”

That changes the question you should ask. Instead of “Does this look real?” ask “Has the identity and request been independently verified?” A synthetic message can pass a spelling check, use correct personal details, and arrive from a familiar-looking number while still being fraudulent.

Email remains especially important: Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance reporting 2024 data identified email as the top method scammers used to contact people. The Internet Crime Complaint Center received more than 22,000 complaints reporting AI-related information in 2025. Those figures cover reported incidents, not every scam attempt, so they should be treated as a warning about scale rather than a measure of your personal risk.

How to detect an AI-assisted phishing email

AI does not create a special kind of email header. The same checks that expose impersonation still work, but you must rely less on writing style and more on the sender, destination, context, and verification.

1. Expand the sender details

Inspect the complete address, not just the display name. Compare the domain after the @ with the organization’s known domain. Look for a one-character substitution, an added word, an unusual country-code ending, or a look-alike spelling. A message that displays “Payroll Director” may come from an unrelated mailbox.

Check the Reply-To field as well. An attacker can make the visible From address look plausible while directing replies to a different account. In your mail app, open the message details or “show original” view to see the full headers. Do not treat a passing authentication indicator as proof that the request is legitimate: a criminal can send authenticated mail from a look-alike domain.

2. Inspect links without opening them

Hover over a link on a computer or press and hold it on a phone to preview the destination. Read the complete host name, including the part immediately before the first slash. A URL can contain a trusted brand’s name in a subdomain while the actual site belongs to someone else. Shortened links hide this information and deserve extra caution when the message is unexpected.

Do not sign in through a link in an unexpected email. Open the organization’s known website using a bookmark or an address you type yourself. If the message concerns a bank, delivery, payroll, cloud account, or government service, use the phone number or support path you already have, not the contact details in the message.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

3. Treat the request and its timing as evidence

Behavioral clues are stronger than prose quality. Slow down when a message combines any of these:

  • Urgency, a deadline, or a threat of account closure.
  • A demand for secrecy or instructions not to involve a colleague or family member.
  • A request for a password, one-time code, identity document, or other credential.
  • An unexpected invoice, gift-card purchase, cryptocurrency transfer, wire, or payroll change.
  • New bank, supplier, delivery, or payment instructions.
  • An attachment you were not expecting, especially a document asking you to enable macros or sign in.

AI can remove obvious spelling errors and imitate a colleague’s tone, but it cannot make an unexpected financial change safe. Confirm the business purpose and destination separately.

4. Verify a colleague, executive, vendor, or family member independently

Use a phone number already stored in your contacts, an internal directory, or a separate conversation. Do not reply to the suspicious email and do not use a number supplied in it. For a payment or account-change request, require a second-person review or an established approval process. If the sender resists a callback, insists that the request is confidential, or changes the story when challenged, stop.

5. Decide what to do with attachments

Do not open an unexpected attachment merely to see whether it is genuine. Confirm the sender and purpose first. If a legitimate organization needs to share a document, obtain it through its known portal or ask the sender to identify it through an independent channel. If you already opened an attachment, disconnect from sensitive accounts, run your organization’s approved security checks, and change credentials from a known-clean device if you entered them.

How to recognize an AI voice scam

A short recording or live call can be generated from publicly available audio. A familiar voice is therefore an identity clue, not authentication. Caller ID can also be spoofed.

End the call and call back yourself

If someone asks for money, codes, credentials, identity documents, or urgent action, end the call. Call the person through a number already in your contacts or another trusted source. For a workplace request, use the company directory or start a new conversation in the organization’s normal collaboration system. Never transfer funds while the original caller remains on the line directing you.

Use a pre-agreed challenge phrase

Families and teams can agree on a phrase that is not posted publicly and is not a routine password. When an urgent request arrives by phone or voice message, ask for that phrase, then verify through a separate channel. A challenge phrase is useful only if it was established beforehand and kept private; do not invent one during the suspicious call.

Listen for artifacts, but do not rely on them

Possible signs include lag between a question and answer, unnatural timing, odd word choices, a change in pitch or tone, repeated phrasing, and background noise that does not match the environment. A clipped or compressed recording can create similar artifacts. Modern voice clones may sound nearly identical to the real person, so the absence of artifacts does not clear the call.

Set a hard rule for high-risk requests

Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, login details, one-time codes, or identity documents until the request is independently confirmed. A person who genuinely needs help can wait for a callback and a second check. If the request involves a new bank account or a changed supplier detail, verify the change with the known organization using the old, trusted contact information.

How to assess a suspicious image or deepfake video

Visual clues can help you decide to investigate, but they are not proof. Compression, poor lighting, camera shake, and video editing can produce mistakes that have nothing to do with synthetic media.

Yubico - Security Key NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Key, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified

Check the face, hands, and objects

  • Hands or feet may have distorted anatomy, merged fingers, or changing proportions.
  • Facial features can shift between frames, especially around teeth, ears, hairlines, and eyes.
  • Glasses, jewelry, logos, and patterned clothing may warp or change shape.
  • Shadows and reflections may point in inconsistent directions.
  • Movement can look unnaturally smooth, stiff, or disconnected from the scene.
  • Lip movement may not match the speech, or the voice may seem detached from the room.
  • A watermark may be missing, altered, or placed inconsistently; its presence alone does not establish authenticity.

Verify the source, date, and identity

Find the original upload and inspect the account that posted it. Check whether the date, location, and claimed event fit other reliable information. Look for the person’s official account or a statement from the organization involved. Do not treat a repost, screenshot, or cropped clip as the original. If the material is being used to request money or action, contact the person or organization through a trusted channel rather than debating the pixels.

Understand what visual inspection cannot do

There is no dependable human checklist that proves a sophisticated deepfake is real or fake in every case. A convincing face, synchronized speech, or high resolution does not authenticate identity. Treat visual anomalies as a reason to pause, not as a verdict.

A verification workflow that works across email, voice, and video

  1. Stop the transaction. Do not click, download, reply, disclose a code, or move money while the identity is uncertain.
  2. Record the claim. Note who supposedly contacted you, what they asked for, the deadline, and which account or destination was supplied.
  3. Choose a trusted route. Use a previously stored phone number, a known website, an internal directory, or a separate conversation—not the suspicious message or caller.
  4. Ask a specific confirmation question. Confirm the exact amount, account, document, or action. For family or team use, request the pre-agreed challenge phrase.
  5. Apply a second-person check. Have a colleague, manager, family member, or fraud team review high-value or unusual requests.
  6. Only then act. Navigate to the service yourself, type the destination independently, and follow the organization’s normal approval process.

This workflow is intentionally channel-independent. A genuine email can be followed by a fake phone call, and a real video can be reused in a fraudulent message. Verify the request, not just one piece of media.

Layered controls and what each one can—and cannot—do

The Federal Trade Commission describes three intervention points for voice cloning. Using more than one reduces reliance on any single detector, but the FTC also notes that no single solution eliminates the problem.

Control layer When it acts Examples Limit
Upstream prevention or authentication Before synthetic media is delivered or accepted Provenance records, watermarking, liveness checks, strong identity authentication A watermark may be removed or absent, and authentication must be implemented by the service or organization.
Real-time detection or monitoring During a call, login, upload, or transaction Device-side detection, abnormal-audio analysis, transaction monitoring Detectors can miss new generation methods or flag unusual but legitimate behavior.
Post-use evaluation After a recording, message, or incident exists Analysis of audio signals, review of headers, source tracing, forensic examination It may help investigation without preventing the original loss.

Organizations evaluating controls should compare identity assurance, detection timing, coverage across email, voice, images, and video, false-positive burden, privacy and data handling, device support, reporting workflow, and performance when an attacker has convincing synthetic media. A FIDO2/WebAuthn security key is useful for protecting an account after a password is stolen, but it does not identify a deepfake voice or video.

What to do after you suspect or confirm a scam

If you have not interacted

  • Do not click links, open attachments, reply, or call the supplied number.
  • Report the message through your mail provider or organization’s phishing-reporting function, then delete it or preserve it according to workplace policy.
  • If the message impersonates a bank, employer, delivery service, or family member, alert that organization or person through a trusted route.

If you clicked, disclosed information, or installed something

  • Stop entering information and disconnect the affected device from networks if malware is suspected.
  • From a known-clean device, change the exposed password and every other account that reused it.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication. A FIDO2/WebAuthn security key can provide phishing-resistant protection for services that support it.
  • Contact the bank, payment service, employer, or account provider immediately using its official contact path. Ask about stopping or reversing transactions and securing the account.
  • Review sign-in history, forwarding rules, recovery addresses, and newly added devices or sessions.

Report and preserve evidence

Report phishing to the Federal Trade Commission and the Anti-Phishing Working Group. Report internet crime to the Internet Crime Complaint Center when appropriate. Preserve the original message, complete headers, sender address, phone number, recording, video or image file, URLs, timestamps, payment details, and screenshots. Do not edit the original files; investigators may need metadata and routing information.

Practical policies for families and workplaces

Families

  • Agree that urgent money requests always require a callback to a saved number.
  • Create a private challenge phrase and a backup contact who can verify emergencies.
  • Tell relatives that embarrassment or secrecy is never a reason to skip verification.
  • Keep important numbers on paper or in a place accessible if a phone account is compromised.

Workplaces

  • Require independent confirmation for bank-detail changes, payroll changes, gift cards, cryptocurrency, and unusual wire transfers.
  • Use two-person approval for high-value payments and require a written record of the callback.
  • Train staff to inspect full sender addresses, Reply-To fields, link destinations, and attachments.
  • Provide a simple internal reporting path and preserve headers and logs for the security team.
  • Protect accounts with unique passwords and two-factor authentication, preferably a phishing-resistant method where supported.

Common mistakes that let synthetic scams succeed

  • Trusting perfect grammar: AI can produce polished text, so style is no longer a reliable authenticity test.
  • Trusting caller ID: caller ID can be spoofed; call back using a known number.
  • Trusting a familiar voice or face: cloning and deepfakes can reproduce both convincingly.
  • Using the contact details in the message: those details may be controlled by the attacker.
  • Trying to win an argument with the scammer: end the interaction and verify independently instead.
  • Assuming a detector is definitive: automated tools can produce false positives and false negatives, especially as generation methods change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can perfect spelling prove that an email is legitimate?

No. Generative AI can produce polished social-engineering text. Inspect the complete sender and Reply-To addresses, link destinations, attachments, and the request’s urgency, then verify independently.

What if the caller knows personal details only my family would know?

Treat that as a reason to verify, not proof of identity. End the call and use a number already in your contacts; a private challenge phrase can add another check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are deepfake-detection tools enough by themselves?

No. The FTC describes prevention or authentication, real-time monitoring, and post-use analysis as complementary layers and notes that no single solution eliminates voice-cloning risk.

What evidence should I save before deleting a scam?

Keep the original message and complete headers, phone number, recording, image or video file, URLs, timestamps, screenshots, and transaction details without editing the originals.
