Search your origin, web-server, CDN, or WAF access logs for documented crawler tokens, then verify the source network before treating a request as genuine. A matching User-Agent identifies what the requester claimed, not who actually sent the request. Reliable attribution combines the token with source-IP checks, forward-confirmed reverse DNS, and—where available—a verified-bot signal from your CDN or WAF.

This method also separates training crawlers such as GPTBot, search fetchers such as OAI-SearchBot, and user-triggered fetchers such as ChatGPT-User. That distinction matters because blocking one class can affect search visibility, model training preferences, or individual users fetching a page.

What a server-log entry can tell you

An access-log record proves that a request reached the layer that logged it with a particular HTTP header and network behavior. Usually you can inspect the timestamp, requested URL, method, status code, response size, latency, source address, and User-Agent. Those fields let you measure activity and investigate patterns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The record does not, by itself, prove that the requester is OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google, Meta, Amazon, Common Crawl, Apple, DuckDuckGo, or ByteDance. Any client can send a familiar User-Agent string. Treat the header as an attribution claim until the source IP or a trusted bot-verification system supports it.

  • Header evidence: the token in the HTTP User-Agent.
  • Behavioral evidence: request timing, URL patterns, methods, status codes, response bytes, latency, and robots.txt access.
  • Network evidence: a source address in the operator’s published ranges, plus forward-confirmed reverse DNS where the operator documents suitable hostnames.
  • Platform evidence: a verified-bot classification supplied by your CDN or WAF.

Keep those evidence levels separate in dashboards and incident notes. A request can be labelled “claims to be GPTBot” without being counted as a verified OpenAI crawler.

Start with the right log source

Export the access logs from every layer that can receive the request: the origin server, web server, CDN, and WAF. A crawler may be visible at the edge but not at the origin, or the origin may record a CDN address rather than the crawler’s address. Record which layer produced each row so that counts from different layers are not added together accidentally.

Retain, at minimum, the following fields:

  • UTC timestamp with enough precision to see bursts.
  • Source IP as observed at that layer.
  • HTTP method and complete request path, including the query string when it affects caching or routing.
  • Response status, response bytes, and request latency.
  • The complete User-Agent value.
  • Whether the path was /robots.txt.
  • CDN or WAF bot-verification result, if your service supplies one.

If privacy or retention rules require redaction, preserve a stable, reversible-for-authorized-staff representation of the source address and a timestamp precise enough for correlation. Do not discard the user-agent or path fields needed to identify the crawler class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: filter for documented crawler tokens

Search the User-Agent field for exact tokens rather than a broad match for words such as “bot” or “AI.” Broad matches catch uptime monitors, ordinary search crawlers, libraries, and malicious scanners. Use a case-insensitive search if your log pipeline preserves headers with inconsistent capitalization.

For a compressed text log, a simple first pass can look like this; adjust the file path and field parsing to your server’s log format:

zgrep -Eai 'GPTBot|OAI-SearchBot|ChatGPT-User|ClaudeBot|Claude-SearchBot|Claude-User|PerplexityBot|Perplexity-User|Googlebot|Google-CloudVertexBot|meta-externalagent|meta-externalfetcher|FacebookBot|Amazonbot|CCBot|Applebot|DuckAssistBot|Bytespider' /var/log/*access*.log*

For a log-management system, make the same expression a saved query over the parsed User-Agent field. Keep the original value in the result so you can spot version suffixes, additional product identifiers, or spelling differences instead of reducing every row to a shortened label.

Cloudflare says administrators can search their logs for the user-agent strings of entities requesting content to see how many requests come from AI crawlers. That approach is useful for discovery, but it remains header-based until you add network or verified-bot checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: classify the token before deciding what to do

Not every AI-related token represents the same purpose. Use the following classification when you build a report or alert.

Operator or service Token What the token indicates
OpenAI GPTBot Training crawler. OpenAI says content identified as reachable by GPTBot may be used to train its foundation models.
OpenAI OAI-SearchBot Crawler controlling whether a page can appear in ChatGPT search.
OpenAI ChatGPT-User User-triggered fetch. OpenAI says it is not an automatic web crawler.
Anthropic ClaudeBot Anthropic’s general crawler token.
Anthropic Claude-SearchBot Anthropic search-related crawler token.
Anthropic Claude-User Anthropic user-triggered fetch token.
Perplexity PerplexityBot Perplexity’s automatic crawler token.
Perplexity Perplexity-User Perplexity user-triggered fetch token.
Google Googlebot Google’s ordinary web crawler token; it is not a separate “AI crawler” identity.
Google Google-CloudVertexBot Google Cloud Vertex-related crawler token.
Google Google-Extended A robots.txt control token. It may not appear in the HTTP User-Agent at all.
Meta meta-externalagent Meta external-agent token.
Meta meta-externalfetcher Meta external-fetcher token.
Meta FacebookBot Facebook crawler token.
Amazon Amazonbot Amazon crawler token.
Common Crawl CCBot Common Crawl crawler token.
Apple Applebot Apple crawler token.
DuckDuckGo DuckAssistBot DuckDuckGo assistant crawler token.
ByteDance Bytespider ByteDance crawler token.

Store the classification as a separate field. This prevents a report that combines training, search, and user-triggered traffic under one “AI” total and then leads to the wrong robots.txt or WAF decision.

Step 3: group requests to reveal crawl behavior

After filtering, group rows by token, source IP, timestamp window, URL, method, status, response bytes, and latency. A count of requests is only the starting point; the shape of the traffic often tells you whether it is a deliberate crawl, a one-off fetch, or a spoof.

Measure rate and bursts

Calculate requests per minute or per five-minute window for each token and source address. A steady sequence over many URLs is consistent with an automatic crawler. A single request immediately after a person shares a URL may be a user-triggered fetch. Sudden high-rate bursts, especially when they produce many errors, deserve rate-limit review even when the token is genuine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect repeated paths

List the most frequently requested paths and the number of distinct URLs. Automatic crawlers commonly revisit a predictable set of pages, while a user-triggered fetch usually targets one or a few URLs. Treat this as a behavioral clue, not proof of identity.

Check methods, statuses, and bytes

Record whether requests use GET, HEAD, or another method, and compare status-code distributions. A crawler receiving many 404 or 403 responses may be following stale links or encountering a policy rule. Large response-byte totals indicate bandwidth exposure even when the request count is modest. Latency spikes can reveal expensive dynamic pages being fetched repeatedly.

Look for robots.txt requests

Include /robots.txt in the grouped view. A crawler may request it before page URLs, but its presence is not required for every request and does not authenticate the client. Conversely, a robots.txt directive can affect a crawler’s policy without producing a matching token in your access log.

A practical report has one row per token and day, with request count, unique source addresses, unique URLs, first and last request, median and high-percentile latency, total bytes, status-code counts, and robots.txt requests. Keep a second report at source-IP level so a single address presenting several tokens is easy to investigate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: verify that the crawler is genuine

Compare source IPs with published ranges

For each high-volume or policy-sensitive source, compare the observed address with the operator’s current published IP ranges. Perform this check against the address seen by the logging layer, not an address copied from a different proxy tier. Range membership raises confidence but should be recorded with the date of the check because published ranges can change.

Use forward-confirmed reverse DNS

Resolve the source address to its reverse-DNS hostname, then resolve that hostname forward and confirm that the original address is returned. A reverse name alone is not sufficient: anyone who controls a DNS zone can publish a plausible-looking name, while forward confirmation ties the hostname back to the observed address. Apply the operator’s documented hostname pattern only after the round-trip check succeeds.

Prefer a verified-bot signal when available

CDNs and WAFs can sometimes identify verified crawlers using their own maintained intelligence. Keep that result alongside the raw token and IP. A verified-bot field is stronger operational evidence than a header-only match, but it is still specific to the provider’s coverage and configuration; document which product and rule produced it.

Record confidence instead of a yes/no label

Use categories such as “header claim,” “header plus behavior,” “IP-range match,” “forward-confirmed DNS,” and “verified bot.” This preserves uncertainty and stops an unverified spoof from being treated as an authenticated operator. Re-run validation when a crawler changes infrastructure or when your CDN updates its bot definitions.

Step 5: distinguish automatic crawlers, search fetchers, and users

Use the token’s documented purpose first, then confirm with behavior. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Amazonbot, CCBot, Applebot, DuckAssistBot, and Bytespider represent automatic crawler classes in the reference list. OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot are search-oriented classes. ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, and Perplexity-User represent user-triggered fetching rather than a continuous automatic crawl.

Do not infer that every request from an AI company is training traffic. OpenAI explicitly distinguishes GPTBot from OAI-SearchBot and says ChatGPT-User is not used to crawl the web automatically. Apply the same separation to your own dashboards, alert thresholds, and access rules.

Google requires extra care: Google-Extended is a robots.txt control token and may not be present in HTTP requests, which can still arrive as standard Googlebot traffic. A log search for “Google-Extended” therefore cannot measure that policy directly.

How robots.txt relates to what you see in logs

Robots.txt is a voluntary instruction for compliant bots. It can tell a crawler which paths it should or should not request, but it is not technically binding. A request that violates the file can still reach your server, and a compliant crawler may use a general token while applying a separate robots.txt policy token.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloudflare notes that Google-Extended controls Google’s AI-training use while requests still arrive as ordinary Googlebot traffic. Therefore, compare robots.txt policy with the token and verified-bot reports, but do not expect a one-to-one log signature.

When you need an enforceable result—such as protecting an expensive endpoint, slowing a burst, or denying an unverified client—use a WAF rule, rate limit, authenticated origin control, or managed bot product. Keep robots.txt for communicating preferences to compliant crawlers and use the enforcement layer for traffic control.

Header filtering versus stronger detection methods

Approach Identity confidence Coverage and timing What it can control Main limitation
User-agent token in access logs Low; it records the requester’s claim Fast and inexpensive wherever the header is logged Classification, counts, path and rate analysis Easy to spoof; misses policies represented only in robots.txt
Token plus source-IP range check Higher when the range is current Works on retained origin, CDN, or WAF logs after parsing Better attribution and per-network rate analysis Requires maintained published ranges and correct client-IP handling
Forward-confirmed reverse DNS Higher when the operator documents the hostname pattern Useful during investigation; less convenient for every request Investigation and allow-list support DNS data can change and must be checked in both directions
CDN or WAF verified-bot signal Strongest of these options when coverage applies Near real time at the edge Allow, block, challenge, and rate-limit rules Provider-specific coverage, configuration, and retention costs
Robots.txt directive Does not authenticate a request Visible to compliant crawlers before or during crawling Voluntary crawl preferences Not technically binding and may not appear as a matching user-agent

Evaluate a method on six dimensions: identity confidence, origin-plus-edge coverage, timeliness, ability to distinguish training/search/user-triggered activity, false-positive handling, and query or retention cost. A mature setup uses header filtering for discovery, network or verified-bot checks for attribution, and WAF controls for enforcement.

Operational query examples

Count tokens without losing the original header

Normalize only for grouping and retain the full header in the raw event. A common pattern is to map a case-insensitive match to a canonical label, then group by that label and source address. Do not overwrite the original value; unusual suffixes can reveal a spoof or a new crawler version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
for token in GPTBot OAI-SearchBot ChatGPT-User ClaudeBot Claude-SearchBot Claude-User PerplexityBot Perplexity-User Googlebot Google-CloudVertexBot meta-externalagent meta-externalfetcher FacebookBot Amazonbot CCBot Applebot DuckAssistBot Bytespider; do
  printf '%s ' "$token"
  grep -Eai "$token" access.log | wc -l
done

This shell example is a rough count for a plain-text log. In production, parse the structured field in your log platform so a token appearing in a URL or referrer is not mistaken for a user-agent match.

Find bursts and expensive paths

Group matching rows into fixed time windows, then sort by request count, total response bytes, and high latency. Review the top paths separately from the top source addresses. A low-volume crawler that repeatedly requests a very slow endpoint can have more operational impact than a high-volume crawler fetching cached static files.

Correlate edge and origin records

Use a request ID or a timestamp-and-path join where your infrastructure provides no shared identifier. Compare the edge’s client address and bot verdict with the origin’s apparent peer address. If the origin sees only a CDN address, do not perform crawler attribution against that CDN address; use the edge record or a trusted forwarded-client field whose provenance is documented.

Using Cloudflare AI Crawl Control

Once you have measured traffic with logs, Cloudflare AI Crawl Control is the relevant managed path for analyzing AI-crawler activity and allowing or blocking specific verified crawlers. Put it after your discovery workflow: first establish which tokens, paths, rates, and source networks are reaching you; then use the product’s verified-crawler controls to enforce a policy at the edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a log-based audit even when a managed control is enabled. It lets you confirm that a rule matches the intended class, detect traffic that presents a spoofed token but fails verification, and quantify changes in requests, bytes, status codes, and latency after enforcement.

Current observed traffic context

Cloudflare reported the following shares of observed AI-crawler traffic for May 2025. These are Cloudflare’s measurements, not universal proportions for every website or region.

Crawler Observed share Measurement qualification
GPTBot 30% Cloudflare observation, May 2025
ClaudeBot 21% Cloudflare observation, May 2025
Meta-ExternalAgent 19% Cloudflare observation, May 2025
Amazonbot 11% Cloudflare observation, May 2025
Bytespider 7.2% Cloudflare observation, May 2025

In a separate Cloudflare sample taken June 6, 2025, 546 of 3,816 sampled domains—about 14%—had AI-specific robots.txt directives. That sample describes the domains Cloudflare examined on that date; it is not a prevalence estimate for the entire web.

Troubleshooting common detection mistakes

You find no AI tokens, but bandwidth is rising

Check every logging layer and confirm that the complete User-Agent field is retained. A CDN may terminate the request before it reaches the origin, or a client may be using an unlisted or spoofed token. Review source-IP concentration, request paths, and verified-bot fields rather than searching only for known names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A token appears from an unexpected address

Keep the request as an unverified header claim. Compare the address with the operator’s published ranges, perform forward-confirmed reverse DNS, and check the CDN or WAF verdict. Do not allow-list an address solely because its header says GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or another documented name.

Your robots.txt rule does not change the logs

That is expected when a client ignores voluntary instructions, when the request uses a different token, or when the directive controls a policy such as Google-Extended rather than a distinct HTTP user-agent. Use WAF, rate-limit, authenticated-origin, or managed bot controls when the outcome must be enforceable.

Google-Extended never appears

Do not treat that absence as proof that Google’s AI-training policy is unused. Google-Extended may be evaluated from robots.txt while requests continue to identify as standard Googlebot. Audit the robots.txt file separately from HTTP token counts.

One source address presents several crawler names

Inspect the raw headers, timing, URL mix, and verification results. A shared address can represent a proxy or edge service, while multiple unrelated names from one unverified address can indicate spoofing. Keep each token’s counts separate until identity checks resolve the ambiguity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blocking a training crawler also blocks useful access

Separate training tokens from search and user-triggered tokens before writing a rule. OpenAI’s documented distinctions between GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User illustrate why a single “AI” block can have unintended effects. Apply the narrowest rule that matches your stated policy and monitor status codes and search-related traffic after the change.

A repeatable monitoring checklist

  • Export origin, web-server, CDN, and WAF access logs, and label the layer for every event.
  • Preserve timestamp, source address, method, path, status, bytes, latency, complete user-agent, and bot-verification fields.
  • Filter for the documented tokens and retain the unmodified header.
  • Classify training, search, user-triggered, ordinary search, and other crawler traffic separately.
  • Group by token, source address, time window, path, method, status, bytes, latency, and robots.txt requests.
  • Compare important sources with published IP ranges and perform forward-confirmed reverse DNS.
  • Use a CDN or WAF verified-bot result when available, and record the provider and rule version.
  • Mark header-only matches as unverified; never treat a matching token as authentication.
  • Use robots.txt for voluntary instructions and WAF, rate limits, authenticated origin controls, or managed bot controls for enforcement.
  • Review the policy after crawler tokens, IP ranges, or provider verification definitions change.
