Reliable AI agent workflows need more than JSON that parses: they need contracts that tell each consumer what fields mean, constrain model outputs where appropriate, define how tool calls are executed and returned, handle refusals and failures explicitly, and are tested across complete workflows. Design the model-facing schema, application logic, downstream API payloads, and user-facing output as related—but not interchangeable—interfaces.
What makes an agent JSON interface reliable?
A JSON interface is a contract between a producer and a consumer. In an agent workflow, the producer might be a model proposing a tool call, application code returning a tool result, or an API sending data to a client. The consumer might be another one of those components or a person-facing renderer. Reliability depends on whether each consumer can interpret the payload and respond correctly when the expected outcome does not occur.
Separate four properties that are easy to confuse:
- Parseability: the payload is valid JSON.
- Schema conformance: its fields and values meet the declared structural rules.
- Semantic correctness: the values mean what the consumer expects and are appropriate to the task.
- Workflow success: the agent chooses suitable actions, handles their results, and completes the task safely.
A schema can help constrain shape and allowed values, but it cannot establish that a tool call is wise, that a returned fact is grounded, or that a multi-step task succeeded. Treat schema validation as one control in a larger workflow.
How should you define the contract?
Start with the consumer
For every JSON object, write down who consumes it and what they need to do with it. A model-facing tool argument schema, an application-to-service request, a tool result, and a client-facing response can all describe the same task while needing different fields, constraints, and privacy rules. Avoid one catch-all object if its consumers have conflicting needs.

For each contract, specify:
- What the object represents and which component produces it.
- Which keys are required, which may be absent, and what each value means.
- Allowed values and constraints, such as an enum, numeric range, or string format, where the selected schema mode supports them.
- How the consumer should behave when data is absent, invalid, refused, incomplete, or unsuccessful.
- Whether fields contain user-provided, model-generated, or system-assigned values.
Use clear field names and descriptions for important fields. Evaluate the design against real candidate inputs and outputs; a schema that validates is not necessarily a schema that expresses the task clearly. OpenAI’s Structured Outputs guidance recommends clear names, descriptions, and evaluations when designing schemas. Its documentation reviewed on October 4, 2026, describes Structured Outputs as a way to make responses adhere to a supplied JSON Schema, subject to documented exceptions and supported-schema constraints.
Make optionality explicit
Required and optional fields are not interchangeable. If a field may legitimately be unavailable, specify how that state is represented and how a consumer distinguishes it from an empty value or a failed operation. For example, a nullable value, an explicit status, or a separate outcome object may be appropriate depending on the schema mode and application. Do not imply that a key is optional merely by omitting it from examples.
How should JSON schemas constrain model outputs?
Use schema enforcement where the API and model support the constraints your consumer needs. OpenAI distinguishes schema-constrained responses from best-effort generation, and recommends strict mode for function calling. These features are platform-specific, not a guarantee of identical behavior across providers.

Account for strict function-schema requirements
For OpenAI strict function calling, every object in the parameters schema must set additionalProperties to false, and every declared property must be marked required. This affects how optional values are modeled: if the chosen strict schema requires every key, include the key and represent its permissible unavailable state explicitly rather than assuming omission will be accepted. Confirm the exact supported JSON Schema subset for the endpoint and model you use; do not assume every keyword or composition is supported.
Schema constraints are useful for required keys and allowed values, but descriptions still matter: the model needs to understand when a tool is appropriate and what each argument means. Validation should also happen in application code at the boundary where untrusted or externally generated data enters the system.
How should a tool-call exchange work?
A tool call is a proposal from the model, not an instruction that executes itself. Application code remains responsible for validating and executing the call, then associating the result with the specific call before the model continues. OpenAI’s documented flow is to provide available tools, receive a tool call, execute application-side code with its input, return the output, and then receive a final response or additional calls.

- Define the tool. Document its purpose, when it should be used, argument schema, expected result, and possible errors.
- Receive and validate the proposal. Check the tool name, arguments, authorization, and any business rules before execution. Do not treat schema conformance as authorization.
- Execute in application code. Apply the application’s own permission, safety, and operational checks. The model proposes; the application decides whether and how the action runs.
- Return a result tied to that call. Supply a clear success or error result associated with the corresponding call identifier so the model can interpret the right outcome.
- Continue or stop deliberately. Let the model make another call or produce a final response as appropriate, while enforcing limits and handling failure states in application code.
Tool outputs may be structured JSON or plain text, depending on the interface. Keep the result understandable to its consumer and make errors distinguishable from ordinary data. Avoid returning an ambiguous payload that could be read as successful completion when execution actually failed.
How should failures, refusals, and incomplete output be represented?
A successful JSON parse does not prove that the model completed the task. OpenAI documents structured-response cases that do not match the requested schema, including refusals and output cut off by a token limit. Consumers should branch on the response status and refusal information exposed by the API, not merely attempt to parse a text field and proceed.

- Refusal: detect the refusal outcome and follow the product’s refusal path; do not treat it as an ordinary answer or tool result.
- Incomplete response: detect truncation or another incomplete status and decide whether to retry, ask for a narrower result, or stop. Never pass a partial object to a later step as complete.
- Malformed or nonconforming payload: reject or quarantine it at the boundary, capture enough diagnostic context, and use a controlled recovery path rather than silently filling missing values.
- Tool or downstream API error: return a clear error state associated with the tool call, and define whether the workflow may retry, choose another action, or report that it could not finish.
Retry behavior should depend on the failure. Retrying a transient service error may be reasonable; blindly retrying a refused request, invalid arguments, or a non-idempotent action can create a different problem. Make these branches explicit in the application rather than relying on the model to infer them from vague text.

Which conventions make API payloads easier to consume?
For general API responses, use a documented envelope that makes success and error outcomes unambiguous. Google’s JSON style guide describes a top-level organization around data or error, with error code and message fields, as well as pagination conventions. Choose a form that fits your API and document when fields are present; do not combine success and error signals without a defined interpretation.
Identifiers and correlation
Use identifiers for distinct purposes. Google’s guide describes id as service-assigned and context as a client-supplied value that a server echoes to help correlate a response with its request. If an agent workflow needs request-response matching, define a stable correlation value, who creates it, where it is propagated, and whether it is safe to expose. Keep a tool-call identifier distinct from a business entity identifier.
Time values
Google’s guide recommends RFC 3339 formatting for date property values and ISO 8601 for durations. In your own contract, say whether a timestamp is event time, request time, or update time, and specify timezone and precision. A timestamp string without those semantics can be syntactically valid yet misleading to a downstream consumer.

Pagination
Choose and document whether paging is offset-based or cursor/continuation-based. Google’s guide includes examples with totals, page indexes, next/previous links, and continuation fields. State whether totals are exact or conditional, how a client requests the next page, and what happens when the underlying collection changes between requests. Do not expose multiple competing paging signals unless their relationship is defined.
How do you test whether the whole workflow works?
Build evaluations around behavior, not just whether generated output parses. Google’s agents-cli Evaluation Guide recommends structured evaluations to check tool choice, response quality, and edge cases; its listed metric categories include tool-use quality, multi-turn tool-use quality, trajectory quality, task success, hallucination, and grounding. Select measures that match the agent’s job rather than treating every metric as mandatory.
- Write core cases. Include representative tasks, expected tool choices, key argument expectations, and the outcome that counts as success.
- Add edge cases. Test missing or ambiguous user information, invalid inputs, tool errors, refusals, incomplete responses, and cases where no tool should be called.
- Evaluate sequences. For multi-step tasks, inspect whether the agent uses results from earlier calls correctly, recovers when a call fails, and stops when the task is complete.
- Check grounding and task outcome. Where relevant, assess whether claims are supported by the available information and whether the user-facing result actually meets the task’s requirements.
- Fix failures and expand coverage. Use an iterative eval-and-fix cycle, then broaden the evaluation set after the core cases pass.
Google’s agent tutorial describes Cloud Trace spans for LLM calls and tool executions, including latency breakdowns, and a way to inspect content logs. Traces and logs can help teams diagnose shape mismatches, failed calls, and slow steps; they do not by themselves demonstrate task quality. Apply appropriate access controls and retention rules to logs, especially where prompts, tool arguments, or results may contain sensitive information.
How should you choose between platform interfaces?
There is no universal JSON-interface winner established by the cited platform documentation. Compare the actual endpoint, model, schema support, tool-call lifecycle, failure signals, and evaluation or observability features you plan to use. OpenAI’s and Google’s documents describe their own features and conventions; they are not a head-to-head benchmark or a promise of cross-platform compatibility.
