Design a modern automotive electrical and electronic (E/E) system as a lifecycle-managed platform, not as a collection of isolated ECUs. Start with vehicle functions, hazards and operating modes; choose a topology and power system that meet their timing and availability needs; then define compute, networks, diagnostics, cybersecurity and update behavior before assigning software to hardware.

Start with vehicle functions, hazards and operating modes

Build the architecture from what the vehicle must do, rather than from a preferred controller or network. Inventory propulsion, braking, steering, body functions, charging, thermal management, ADAS, connectivity and user-facing features. For each function, record the conditions it must handle and the system behavior expected when something fails.

  • Timing: identify deadlines, rates and communication dependencies, including which actions require predictable real-time behavior.
  • Availability and degradation: specify what must remain operational after a fault, what can be limited or shut down, and how the driver or service technician is informed.
  • Safety: define hazards and safety goals at vehicle level, then trace them into systems, hardware, software and verification.
  • Cybersecurity: identify valuable assets, interfaces and threats that could affect vehicle behavior or data.
  • Lifecycle: account for diagnostics, service, software versions, configuration differences and updates after production starts.

Use ISO 26262 to address hazards caused by malfunctioning safety-related E/E behavior. ISO 21448, commonly called SOTIF, addresses risks arising from intended-function limitations or specification insufficiencies that can create hazards without a component malfunction. These are complementary safety concerns, not interchangeable labels.

Choose the E/E topology around the vehicle’s constraints

Compare distributed ECUs, domain controllers, zonal controllers and centralized compute against the same requirements. A topology that concentrates compute may reduce some duplication but can also concentrate thermal, availability and fault-containment concerns. A zonal design places local I/O and power distribution near vehicle regions, while central or domain compute can run functions that do not need to be tied to a particular physical location. The European Commission identifies zonal and next-generation E/E architectures as part of the software-defined-vehicle transition.

Topology Where it fits Key design questions
Distributed ECUs Functions remain on separate controllers close to their associated systems. Will wiring, connectors, gateways and ECU-to-ECU dependencies remain manageable as features and variants grow?
Domain controllers Compute is grouped by functional domain, such as body or driving functions. How will cross-domain data, timing, fault containment and ownership be handled?
Zonal controllers Local I/O and power distribution are grouped by physical vehicle area and connected to higher-level compute. Can local placement simplify interfaces and wiring without creating unacceptable latency, thermal or serviceability constraints?
Centralized compute High-performance compute is concentrated in fewer platforms, with vehicle functions deployed across them. How will compute capacity, isolation, redundancy, cooling and degraded operation be managed?

Evaluate each option for harness routing and mass, connector count, latency, deterministic timing, compute utilization, fault containment, thermal limits, serviceability, variant reuse and lifecycle cost. Do not assume a single topology must serve every function: deterministic local control and compute-intensive services can have different placement needs.

Choose 12 V and 48 V distribution from load and safety needs

Voltage architecture follows load profiles and safety analysis. Retain or select low-voltage rails where they meet the system’s needs; consider 48 V where the power demands and component choices justify it. NXP’s CoreRide Z248 reference system is explicitly positioned for a 48 V zonal architecture for software-defined vehicles, but it is an example of an approach, not a universal prescription.

For each rail, design the conversion stages, high-current paths, protection, grounding, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and wake/sleep behavior. Specify which loads remain powered after a fault, how nonessential loads are shed, and what energy reserves support functions such as steering, braking, sensing and communications. Treat power distribution as part of the safety architecture: a function cannot meet its availability target if its supply disappears in the fault conditions it is supposed to survive.

Compare voltage options using load current and power, conversion and distribution losses, component availability, protection and isolation complexity, and safety handling. The available evidence does not establish a general adoption rate or a universal wiring-reduction figure for 48 V, so those should be determined for the vehicle program rather than assumed.

Allocate software to compute platforms deliberately

Keep application behavior portable where practical, with clear interfaces, hardware abstraction and a defined deployment process. AUTOSAR’s 2023 anniversary publication captures the direction of travel: “Software is no longer bound to specific ECUs, and in fact, often transcends the vehicle.” That does not mean all software should run on one computer; it means software placement and vehicle configuration need explicit management.

Platform Best fit Design consideration
AUTOSAR Classic Deeply embedded, predictable hard-real-time and safety-constrained control. Use where bounded behavior and tightly controlled embedded execution are central requirements.
AUTOSAR Adaptive High-performance, service-oriented and fail-operational use cases, including automated-driving applications. Account for the platform’s high-performance computing context and the system-level requirements for availability and isolation.

AUTOSAR Classic describes a layered application, runtime environment (RTE) and basic-software model, supporting distribution of application components across ECUs. Select the platform by timing, operating-system and hardware requirements, service orientation, update model and fail-operational needs; do not choose it as a branding exercise.

Design networks, diagnostics and time behavior together

Choose CAN or CAN FD, automotive Ethernet, LIN and other links according to bandwidth, determinism, synchronization, safety and cost requirements. A high-bandwidth link does not by itself provide a complete communication design: the architecture also needs clear ownership, timing budgets and behavior when messages or nodes fail.

  • Assign message and service ownership, with defined gateway responsibilities between networks.
  • Set timing budgets, synchronization needs and bandwidth reserves for planned functions, diagnostics, telemetry and software downloads.
  • Define logging, fault reporting and diagnostic access across ECUs and central compute.
  • Specify whether each interface should fail silent, continue in a degraded mode or support fail-operational behavior.
  • Include network segmentation and security monitoring in the design rather than treating them as later add-ons.

Compare CAN-centric and Ethernet-rich designs on bandwidth, latency determinism, synchronization, gateway complexity, diagnostic needs and cybersecurity exposure. The right mix depends on the functions and fault response, not on a single network being universally superior.

Integrate functional safety and cybersecurity

Under ISO 26262, perform the applicable safety analyses for the hardware and architecture, and trace safety requirements through implementation and verification. Use SOTIF analysis for hazards linked to sensing, perception, specification or performance limitations of an intended function where there is no component malfunction. For example, a system’s limitation in a particular operating condition belongs in the intended-function risk analysis even if its hardware and software behave as specified.

Make software updates safe, traceable and recoverable

Software updates are a lifecycle capability, not just a download feature. UNECE Regulation No. 156 addresses software updates and the software-update management system (SUMS). AUTOSAR’s 2023 publication also notes the importance of software-version tracking and updates after start of production in the context of R155 and R156.

Define update behavior before production, including how each vehicle configuration is identified, how dependencies are checked and how an interrupted or unsuccessful installation is recovered. The update path should preserve an auditable record and provide a known safe outcome rather than leaving software state ambiguous.

Verify the complete vehicle architecture

Trace each vehicle-level function and safety or cybersecurity requirement to systems, ECUs, software components, interfaces and tests. Validate not only normal operation but also faults, degraded behavior, configuration differences and update recovery.

A program can combine model-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing with fault injection, EMC and environmental testing, cybersecurity validation and update-recovery tests. The standards define scopes and obligations; they do not prescribe one universal test schedule. Build the verification plan from the vehicle’s hazard analysis, architecture and type-approval markets, and connect field telemetry and service findings back to requirements and configuration records.
