To deploy a Node.js app on GoDaddy, choose one of two separate routes: GoDaddy’s managed Node.js Hosting interface, where you upload a ZIP or connect GitHub and test a preview before publishing, or the GoDaddy Hosting API, which automates app creation, ZIP import, subscription attachment, deployment, and status checks. The interface is the more direct choice for a manual release; use the API when you need deployment automation and can work with a scoped Personal Access Token.
Choose the GoDaddy deployment route
GoDaddy documents a managed Node.js Hosting product with a dashboard workflow and a separate Hosting API. They are not two ways to operate the same set of screens: the UI route uses dashboard actions and supports ZIP or GitHub input, while the API route uses API calls, asynchronous operation checks, and a web-hosting subscription attachment.
| Decision | Managed Node.js Hosting UI | Hosting API |
|---|---|---|
| Input and workflow | Upload a ZIP or choose “Connect GitHub,” select a repository and branch, then use “Import & Deploy.” GoDaddy’s ZIP instructions and GitHub instructions describe these flows. | Make API calls to create a Node.js app, import a ZIP, attach a subscription, and submit a deployment. See the GoDaddy Developers Hosting API deployment guide. |
| Credentials and automation | Use the product interface; the documented workflow does not require configuring API scopes or polling API operations. | Use a Personal Access Token with the required scopes, and poll asynchronous operations until they complete or fail. |
| Preview and production | Open the preview URL, test the app, and select “Publish Now” when ready. | Submit deployment, check the app’s status for its PUBLISH variant, and retrieve its environment URLs. A publish URL is not live until publication. |
| Subscription | GoDaddy’s launch post described a free preview tier for this managed product; check the current product terms in your account. | Attach the app to a valid web hosting subscription before publishing. GoDaddy says, “This operation is required before you can publish a Node.js app to production.” See the subscription-attachment instructions. |
| Updates and diagnostics | The Help workflow documents pulling updates from GitHub; app management includes settings, runtime logs, a file manager, and database tools. Review the build log if deployment fails. | Import and publish new code to the existing app without creating another app or attaching the plan again. Inspect status and logs when startup fails. |
GoDaddy’s August 20, 2026 launch post says Node.js Hosting went generally available on August 12, 2026. The post described the free preview tier as allowing “up to two apps” and said ZIP files could be 100 MB. These are dated vendor claims, not permanent limits or a complete pricing offer; confirm current terms and prices in GoDaddy’s product or account pages. GoDaddy launch post.
Prepare the app before deployment
The detailed ZIP requirements below are from GoDaddy’s Hosting API documentation. The managed UI Help page separately describes a root-level package.json, a start script, binding to PORT, and one application per upload. Do not assume every API-specific package requirement applies identically to the managed product; check that route’s current instructions as well.

Check the API ZIP structure
- Put
package.jsonat the top level of the ZIP, not inside an extra enclosing project folder. - Include non-empty
nameandversionfields, plus bothbuildandstartscripts. - GoDaddy runs
npm run buildduring deployment andnpm startto start the app. A no-op build script is acceptable when no compilation is needed; a Next.js, NestJS, or TypeScript app needs the appropriate real build command. - Specify a Node.js version with the
enginesfield, as GoDaddy recommends. - Bind the server to
process.env.PORT. A hard-coded port will not receive traffic. - Put packages needed at runtime in
dependencies. The API requirements say the platform installs onlydependenciesbefore build and start. - Include source files and package manifests, but exclude
node_modulesand secret-bearing.envfiles.
See GoDaddy’s Node.js app requirements for the API-specific details.
Deploy with the managed Node.js Hosting interface
Upload a ZIP
- Prepare the app according to the managed product’s current requirements, then create a ZIP of the application files.
- In GoDaddy Node.js Hosting, choose the ZIP upload option and submit the archive. GoDaddy’s Help page describes the action as uploading and deploying an app from a ZIP.
- Wait for import and deployment, then open the generated preview URL.
- Test the app in preview. If deployment fails, review the build log and the suggestions shown for the app.
- When the preview is ready for production, select “Publish Now.”
Follow the current ZIP deployment instructions for the exact interface controls.

Connect a GitHub repository
- Choose “Connect GitHub” and authorize the repository access requested by GoDaddy.
- Select the repository and branch containing the app you want to deploy.
- Choose “Import & Deploy,” then wait for the deployment and open its preview URL.
- Check the preview and build log. Use “Publish Now” when the version is ready.
The Help instructions also document pulling updates from GitHub for an existing app. See GoDaddy’s GitHub connection guide.
Deploy through the GoDaddy Hosting API
The API workflow is suitable for scripting a release, but it is not a dashboard shortcut: writes are asynchronous, so a successful request may return an operation or deployment identifier that must be checked before proceeding.

Prepare API access
Create a GoDaddy Personal Access Token with the scopes listed in the API deployment guide: hosting.application:create, hosting.application:read, hosting.source:write, hosting.deployment:execute, and hosting.subscription:write. Keep the token private and do not put it in the application ZIP.
Run the deployment sequence
- Create an app using the Node.js app type.
- Upload and import the ZIP into that app.
- Attach the app to a valid web hosting subscription before attempting production publication.
- Submit the deployment request and record the operation or deployment identifier returned by the API.
- Poll the relevant operation status until it reports
COMPLETEDorFAILED. Avoid tight polling loops; GoDaddy recommends 2–5-second intervals for job status checks. - Inspect the app status and confirm the
PUBLISHvariant is running. Fetch the app record to retrieve its environment URLs.
For later code changes, import the new ZIP and publish to the existing app; GoDaddy says you do not need to create a new app or attach the plan again. The API deployment guide documents the sequence. The API changelog says the Hosting API became available on September 29, 2026, and describes it as async-first: Hosting API changelog.

Troubleshoot a failed or unavailable deployment
Managed UI: build or import failure
- Open the build log and inspect the app suggestions GoDaddy provides after a failed deployment.
- Check that the ZIP contains the application in the expected structure and that the project can complete its build and start steps.
- For a GitHub deployment, confirm that you imported the intended repository and branch before retrying.
API: request or operation failure
- 401 response: GoDaddy lists expired or revoked tokens and missing scopes as possible causes. Create or update a token with the required scopes.
- 429 response: The request has encountered rate limiting. Reduce request frequency; for job checks, use the recommended 2–5-second interval rather than a tight loop.
- Failed import: Check for a malformed ZIP structure or a build failure, then upload a corrected archive.
- Publish variant not running: Allow the rollout window, inspect status and logs for startup errors, fix the cause, then upload and publish again.
- App starts but receives no traffic: Verify that the server listens on the runtime-provided
process.env.PORT, rather than a fixed port.
GoDaddy’s API troubleshooting guide covers token errors, rate limits, and publish-state problems.
