1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a typical AWS live-streaming path, send your source to AWS Elemental MediaLive for real-time encoding, use AWS Elemental MediaPackage to package and originate the stream when you need formats for different playback devices or features such as DRM, and put Amazon CloudFront in front to deliver it to viewers. If MediaLive can produce every format your target players need, AWS documents AWS Elemental MediaStore as an alternative origin.
The right design depends on where your video comes from, which players you must support, how much latency and resilience you need, and where your viewers are. The services do not make every stream redundant or low-latency by default: those outcomes depend on how you configure the complete path.
How the AWS live-streaming path fits together
A live delivery system has three broad jobs: contribute a source feed, encode it into streamable outputs, and make those outputs available to viewers. In AWS’s managed-services pattern, MediaLive handles real-time encoding; MediaPackage can prepare outputs for playback formats and act as an origin; CloudFront distributes the stream. MediaStore is an alternate origin when the encoded outputs already meet the devices’ format requirements.
- Source: A camera, contribution system, or supported file source supplies video to the workflow.
- Encoding: MediaLive converts the incoming feed into configured live outputs, which can include adaptive-bitrate renditions.
- Packaging and origin: MediaPackage can expose the stream in formats for different players and can be configured for DRM. Alternatively, MediaStore can serve as the origin when MediaLive already generates the required formats.
- Delivery: CloudFront serves manifests and media segments to viewers through a CDN.
In AWS’s reference solution, MediaLive processes two input feeds in parallel, MediaPackage provides HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints, and CloudFront distributes them. That is a reference architecture—not an automatic property of a basic single-feed channel.

Choose a source and contribution path
Start with the source you actually have and how it can reach AWS. MediaLive’s workflow wizard supports several paths, including a MediaConnect flow, an AWS Elemental Link hardware device, a mobile phone or webcam delivered over RTMP, and an MP4 file in Amazon S3 or an HTTP server. These are wizard-supported options, not a complete list of every possible MediaLive configuration. MediaLive can also work with upstream systems that provide content such as HLS or transport streams.
| Source path | When it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| MediaConnect flow | A contribution feed is already being carried through MediaConnect. | MediaConnect, MediaLive, and the flow must be deployed in a compatible Region; AWS’s deployment guidance says the solution using a MediaConnect input must be in the same Region as the flow. |
| Elemental Link device | You have an AWS Elemental Link device as the contribution source. | Confirm the device and intended workflow are available for your deployment and Region. |
| Phone or webcam over RTMP | You want a direct camera-based source without treating a webcam as mandatory equipment. | Verify the RTMP feed reaches the workflow and remains stable enough for the event. |
| MP4 in S3 or on an HTTP server | Your workflow can use a supported file source rather than a live camera contribution. | Confirm the file location and delivery method are supported by the workflow you configure. |
Select the contribution method around the source, network, and operating needs. A phone or webcam is one option, not a requirement for every AWS live stream.
Encode the feed with MediaLive
MediaLive ingests and encodes the source in real time. Decide which downstream system will receive its output before selecting the output group and protocol; the receiving service and target players determine what is appropriate.

Plan the output ladder and format
An adaptive-bitrate output uses multiple renditions so a compatible player can select among them as device and network conditions change. Choose the output formats and renditions for the audience and playback devices you intend to serve; there is no single format that is right for every player set. HLS, DASH, and CMAF are central formats in AWS’s live reference solution. AWS’s broader CloudFront guidance also covers Microsoft Smooth Streaming as a common format.

Match the output protocol to the receiver
AWS documents HLS delivery to MediaPackage over HTTPS, RTMP output to a compatible server, and SRT caller or listener operation. MediaConnect is one example of a downstream system that can handle encrypted SRT. Do not assume an output is compatible just because both services support live video: match the MediaLive output group and protocol to the specific receiving service and its configuration.
Decide whether parallel feeds are worth operating
AWS’s reference architecture takes two feeds and processes them in parallel. This provides a design pattern for resilience, but a single-feed setup does not acquire that redundancy automatically. Decide whether the event’s operational risk justifies a second source and parallel processing, and verify that the complete downstream path is configured to use the intended feeds.

Package the stream or use MediaStore as the origin
Use MediaPackage when you need packaging or related features
MediaPackage can prepare encoded outputs for different playback formats and can be configured for DRM. AWS’s reference solution packages adaptive-bitrate output into HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints. For a MediaPackage v2 processing flow, an upstream encoder sends HLS with AWS Signature Version 4 authorization, and MediaPackage serves packaged output over HTTPS.
For new MediaPackage workflows, consider CMAF Ingest v2
AWS recommends the MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest output group for new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows, including its low-latency delivery path, and identifies LL-HLS support. Low-latency support does not establish a guaranteed end-to-end glass-to-glass delay: the available AWS guidance does not quantify a universal latency figure, and actual latency depends on the whole ingest, packaging, CDN, and player configuration.

Put CloudFront in front of the origin
Configure the MediaPackage endpoint or MediaStore container as the CloudFront origin, then set cache behaviors to match the manifest and segment paths actually produced by your workflow. Manifests and media segments commonly need distinct path patterns. For example, HLS manifests use .m3u8 patterns and transport-stream segments use .ts; CMAF segments use .mp4. Configure behaviors for your real endpoint output rather than copying a pattern that does not match it.
For the MediaPackage reference architecture, CloudFront sends an authorization header that identifies authorized requests to the origin. In that solution, the identifier is stored in AWS Secrets Manager. These are reference-architecture security elements to configure deliberately; they are not automatic protections that every independently assembled setup inherits.
Choose the workflow that fits your requirements
| Decision | Option 1 | Option 2 | Choose based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Origin and packaging | MediaPackage | MediaStore | Use MediaPackage when packaging across formats or related features such as DRM are needed; consider MediaStore when MediaLive already creates every required format. |
| Latency path | Standard live delivery | MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest with LL-HLS support | AWS recommends the v2 path for new workflows and identifies its low-latency capabilities. End-to-end latency still depends on the full configuration. |
| Contribution source | MediaConnect flow or Elemental Link | RTMP phone or webcam source | Use the path that fits your source equipment and contribution workflow; a webcam is optional. |
| Delivery formats | HLS, DASH, or CMAF | Other supported output groups or protocols such as RTMP or SRT | Match the output protocol and playback format to the downstream service and target player set. |
| Resilience | Single feed | Parallel redundant feeds | Assess event risk and operational capacity. The parallel-feed design is present in AWS’s reference solution; it is not implied by a single-channel deployment. |
Plan for regional availability and cost
MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect are available only in specific AWS Regions. Check current regional availability for the services you plan to use before building the workflow; if MediaConnect supplies the input, the solution must use the same Region as the flow. Service availability can change, so validate it again at deployment time.

Costs depend on the encoding channel, input and output configuration, packaging and origin use, and viewer delivery through CloudFront. Duration, audience size, bitrate ladder, viewer geography, cache behavior, and current regional pricing all affect the total. Estimate with current AWS pricing and measured or planned traffic rather than treating an example as a quote.
AWS’s deployment guide gives an illustrative estimate of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour SD-540p event with about 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia): approximately $2.50 for encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution. That scenario assumes specified bitrates and viewer traffic, assumes viewers consume the highest bitrate, excludes test-player storage, and is subject to pricing changes. The same guide estimates approximately $1,505.60 for a one-hour HD-1080p event with about 10,000 viewers under its stated assumptions. Neither figure is a generally applicable or current quote for another Region, audience, or configuration.
Validate security, playback, and recovery before the event
- Check authorization end to end: Confirm that the origin accepts the intended CloudFront requests and that any required authorization header or secret is configured as designed.
- Test manifests and segments: Confirm that the player can fetch both the manifest and the media segments through CloudFront. Their path patterns and extensions may differ, so verify the cache behaviors against the actual output.
- Test the target players: Validate compatibility on the devices and playback software your viewers will use; format and protocol choices are not universal.
- Exercise the resilience design: If using parallel inputs, test the intended failover or operating procedure rather than assuming a second feed is automatically selected correctly.
- Review content rights: Confirm you have the rights to the live video, music, and other material you transmit. A working AWS pipeline does not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted content.
Troubleshoot common delivery problems
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The source does not appear in the workflow | Contribution path or source configuration | Verify that the selected source type is supported by the workflow and that the feed or file is reachable through its configured path. |
| MediaLive output does not reach the next service | Output group, protocol, or receiver compatibility | Check that the selected output protocol matches the receiving service and that the expected endpoint is configured. |
| A player loads but cannot start or continue playback | Manifest/segment paths, player compatibility, or origin authorization | Check manifest and segment requests separately, confirm the CloudFront behaviors match their paths, and verify requests are authorized at the origin. |
| Some viewers can play while others cannot | Format compatibility or network-dependent rendition selection | Compare affected player/device support with the formats and adaptive-bitrate outputs actually configured. |
| A low-latency workflow is slower than expected | End-to-end ingest, packaging, CDN, and player settings | Review the complete path. LL-HLS support is not a universal latency guarantee, and no one latency figure applies to every deployment. |
| The workflow using MediaConnect cannot connect across Regions | Regional placement | Confirm the solution is in the same Region as the MediaConnect flow and that all required services are available there. |
