To delete a car’s connected-service data, handle several separate things: erase personal information stored in the vehicle, remove the vehicle or VIN from manufacturer accounts, manage subscriptions, and make any separate privacy or account-deletion request you need. A factory reset alone may not delete information already sent to the manufacturer, and deleting the phone app is not a dependable way to stop data sharing. The right steps depend on your car, model year, connected services and country.
What “deleting your car’s data” can mean
Connected-car information can exist in more than one place, and each action has a different effect. A vehicle reset addresses data stored in the car; removing a VIN addresses its link to an account; privacy controls or requests address certain data sharing or information held by the manufacturer. None should be assumed to do the others’ job.
| Action | What it addresses | What it does not necessarily do |
|---|---|---|
| Reset the vehicle or erase personal information | Personal information stored in the vehicle’s systems. Ford says its master/factory reset removes imported information such as contacts, paired-device names and Wi-Fi network names; the data stored varies by vehicle. Ford | It does not necessarily delete information already transmitted to the manufacturer. Lucid says its infotainment reset affects only vehicle-stored data, not data stored outside the vehicle, including data already transmitted to Lucid. Lucid |
| Remove the vehicle or VIN from an account | The association between the vehicle and a particular manufacturer account. Ford says removal from all associated accounts is needed to remove remote access and stop related information transmission; some vehicles with a Connectivity Device require VIN removal. Ford | It does not, by itself, establish that all local vehicle data or manufacturer-held data has been erased. |
| Turn off or deactivate data sharing | Covered transmission or particular privacy settings, depending on the manufacturer and vehicle. | It may disable connected features and does not necessarily erase data already collected. Stellantis says its “Cancel for Privacy Reasons” request deactivates transmission of covered data, but most connected features will stop. Stellantis |
| Delete the online account or submit a privacy request | The account itself or a request concerning manufacturer-held personal data, subject to the maker’s process and applicable law. | It may not erase data stored in the car unless you separately reset it. Account deletion may also remove access to services and records. |
Before you start
- Record the make, model, model year and country or market. Find the owner’s manual and the current local support and privacy pages for that exact vehicle. Menu labels and reset scope differ, so do not rely on a generic button sequence.
- Save any documents, receipts or statements you may need. Tesla warns that deleting an account ends access to account documents and associated services. Tesla account and privacy support
- List every relevant account and service, including secondary or family accounts. Removing a car from only one account may leave another account’s access in place.
- Decide whether you are selling or transferring the car, buying a used car, stopping location sharing, or closing your own manufacturer account. These goals require overlapping but not identical steps.
How to remove your data when selling or transferring the car
- Save needed records. Download documents or statements before account deletion if you may need them later.
- Erase personal information stored in the vehicle. Follow the exact owner’s-manual procedure for a factory/master reset, delete-personal-data option or equivalent. Stored items may include contacts, paired-device names, profiles, preferences, map destinations and Wi-Fi details. GM warns that personal information left in a vehicle may remain accessible to future users. GM U.S. Consumer Privacy Statement
- Remove the vehicle from every associated manufacturer account. Use the app or account website to remove the car or VIN, and check any secondary accounts. For some Ford vehicles with a Connectivity Device, VIN removal is specifically required. Toyota Canada directs sellers to choose “Remove Vehicle” in the Toyota app. Toyota Canada Connected Services Help Centre
- Check subscriptions and service transfer options. Confirm whether removing the car or resetting it cancels connected subscriptions, and whether any service can be transferred. The result varies: Toyota Canada says removing the vehicle stops active subscriptions, while Volkswagen says its factory-reset process cancels connected-service subscriptions and vehicle pairing. Volkswagen remote-access instructions
- Make a separate account or privacy request if needed. Removing the VIN is not the same as deleting the whole online account or requesting deletion of manufacturer-held data. Use the manufacturer’s account-deletion or privacy-request channel for the outcome you want.
- Verify the result. Check that the VIN no longer appears in each relevant account, old-account remote commands no longer work, subscriptions show the expected status, and the in-car reset has completed. Keep any confirmation of an account or privacy request.
If you bought a used car with the previous owner’s account still linked
Reset the vehicle using the instructions for its exact model and year, then check whether the car can be added to your manufacturer account. If the previous owner’s account still controls remote access or blocks registration, contact the manufacturer or dealer for help. A vehicle reset will not necessarily remove the previous owner’s online account or erase data held outside the car; the former account holder or manufacturer may need to handle that separate step.
How to stop your car from sharing your location
Start with the vehicle’s privacy settings and the manufacturer account controls for the exact model and market. Check the manual and local connected-services support page for controls that affect location or data sharing, and read what features will stop working before switching anything off. If the maker provides a privacy-request channel, use it to ask about the data it holds and the available deletion or transmission-deactivation options.

Do not assume uninstalling the app turns sharing off. Ford states that deleting the Ford/Lincoln app without also performing a master/factory reset will not disable data sharing, and its guidance also calls for account/VIN removal in relevant cases. Should you delete the entire manufacturer account?
Delete the account only if you want to close the online relationship, not merely remove a car from it. Follow the maker’s current account-deletion process and first remove active products if required. Tesla says active Tesla products must be removed before requesting account deletion; deletion ends sign-in and access to associated services and documents. Tesla account and privacy support

Some manufacturers distinguish account deletion from connected-vehicle data removal. Kia’s UK FAQ says removing the VIN or resetting Kia Connect is separate from deleting personal data linked to a Kia Account, for which it directs users to an account-portal deletion request. A reset is useful for clearing local personal information before a transfer, but it is not proof that all copies, backups, records or information shared with third parties have been erased.
