You can clear Safari history without deleting saved passwords or bookmarks. The key is to clear browsing history—not separately remove cookies or website data, which can sign you out of sites. On iPhone or iPad, use Settings; on Mac, use Safari’s History menu. If Safari is syncing through iCloud, a history deletion can also appear on your other devices.

What clearing Safari history removes—and what it does not

Safari keeps browsing history separate from saved passwords, bookmarks, and website data such as cookies. Clearing history is the right choice when you want to remove records of visited pages but keep saved credentials and bookmarks. Apple says clearing history on iPhone or iPad does not change AutoFill information. On Mac, the history command removes visited-page records and related browser records, including recent searches and snapshots of open pages; downloaded files themselves remain. Apple’s iPhone instructions and Mac guide describe these effects.

Website data is different. Cookies and other site data can help websites remember sign-ins or settings. Removing that data may require you to sign in again or can change how a website behaves—even when your saved password remains available through AutoFill or Passwords.

Clear history on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Safari.
  3. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
  4. Choose the timeframe, then tap Clear History to confirm.

Apple says this action does not change AutoFill information. If the clear-history control is gray or unavailable, there may be no history or website data to clear, or Screen Time web-content restrictions may be active. See Apple’s iPhone Safari instructions.

Delete selected history entries instead

To remove particular sites rather than a whole timeframe, open Safari, open Bookmarks and then History, tap the More menu and choose Select Websites. Mark the entries and tap the Trash button. This removes the selected history entries, rather than using the separate control for all website data. Apple documents the steps in its iPhone guide.

Clear history on a Mac

  1. In Safari, choose History > Clear History.
  2. Choose how far back to clear.
  3. Confirm the action.

This clears history records, including recent searches and open-page snapshots; it does not delete downloaded files. If Safari is set up with iCloud on the Mac and your other Apple devices, the history removal is reflected across those devices. Apple’s Mac instructions explain the cleared records and sync behavior.

If you use Safari profiles

On Mac, profiles keep histories and website data separate. Check which profile is active before clearing; Safari lets you clear history for a selected profile or clear all history. Apple says passwords information is shared between profiles. See Apple’s Safari profiles guide.

Avoid removing website data if you only want to clear history

On iPhone or iPad, the separate route is Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data > Remove Now. Apple says website data can be used for tracking and to let sites save login information for faster browsing. Removing it can therefore end site sessions, even though clearing history alone does not change AutoFill information. Details are in Apple’s iPhone guide.

On Mac, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. From there, remove data for selected sites or remove all website data. Apple warns that removing cookies and website data may sign you out or change website behavior. Use this control only if you intend to remove site data, not just the list of pages you visited. See Apple’s Mac cache and cookies guide.

What iCloud sync means for history and bookmarks

When Safari is enabled in iCloud, Safari data such as history and bookmarks is kept up to date across devices using the same Apple Account. A history deletion can consequently propagate to your other devices with Safari sync enabled; it is not necessarily limited to the device where you tapped or clicked Clear. Apple describes Safari syncing in its iCloud guide and its setup instructions.

  • Store private files, photos and videos
  • Back up your vault automatically

Bookmarks are a separate data category: clearing history does not itself delete them. Apple says bookmarks are automatically archived and can be restored from iCloud.com. That recovery option is for bookmarks; it does not turn a history-clear action into a bookmark deletion. See Apple’s Safari iCloud guide.

If a Safari menu or setting looks different

Apple’s labels and navigation can vary by operating-system version. On current iPhone and iPad instructions, Safari settings are under Settings > Apps > Safari; if your device presents a different route or label, check its installed software version and the matching Apple support instructions. On Mac, the history and website-data controls are in Safari’s History menu and Settings, respectively.
