The reliable order is tree preparation, lights, garland or ribbon, Spirit ornaments, topper, then skirt or base décor. Lights go on first so ornaments do not block the wiring, and layered ornament placement gives character pieces visibility without making the tree look crowded. Build the display around safe electrical loading, balanced weight, repeated colors and enough depth between the trunk and branch tips.
Prepare the tree and the workspace
Choose a safe position
Set the tree on a stable stand or a level base where it cannot be easily knocked over. Keep it clear of radiators, fireplaces, heat vents and other heat sources. Do not place it where branches or cords block a doorway, stairway or other exit. Put the tree close enough to a suitable outlet that you will not need a long chain of extension cords.
For an artificial tree, assemble every section before decorating and shape the branches. Spread compressed tips in different directions so the tree has usable depth rather than a flat outer shell. For a live tree, confirm that it is fresh and keep the stand filled with water throughout the season. Secure a tall or narrow tree if children, pets or busy foot traffic could pull on it.

Set up access and supplies
Use a stable step stool or ladder for the upper third; never stand on a chair or an unstable box. Place a basket or tray nearby for ornaments, hooks and spare bulbs. Useful supplies include certified indoor light strings, a power strip or timer rated for the total load, garland or ribbon, ornament hooks, and a skirt or other treatment for the base.

- Test every light string before it goes on the tree.
- Separate heavy, fragile and small-part ornaments so you can place them appropriately.
- Keep packaging or a note with each light string’s wattage and connection limit.
Plan the visual design before hanging decorations
Spirit Christmas’s seasonal assortment includes character ornaments and light-up décor, but the exact designs, prices and availability change by season. Decide how prominent those pieces should be before you start. A tree looks intentional when its choices are coordinated across five visual controls: color, pattern, texture, luminance and size.
Choose a color and light direction
Pick one main palette and one accent palette. For example, warm white lights can support traditional reds, greens and metallics, while a cooler or multicolor scheme can make novelty characters more prominent. Repeat each major ornament color in at least two parts of the tree so a single bright object does not look isolated.
Decide how dense the theme should be
A character-forward tree can place Spirit pieces across the front and sides, with quieter filler ornaments behind them. A more traditional tree can use Spirit ornaments as recognizable accents among balls, stars, snowflakes or other neutral shapes. The objective is a readable composition, not maximum ornament count.

Do not decorate only the outside tips. Leave room for some ornaments inside the branches and near the trunk. Inner placement creates shadow and depth; outer placement makes a signature character or unusual silhouette easy to see from across the room.

Install the lights first
Lights should be installed before ribbon and ornaments. This lets you reach the trunk and inner branches without knocking off finished decorations and makes dark pockets easier to identify.
Choose a wrapping pattern

Choose the pattern that matches branch density and the glow you want. A sparse tree may need the deeper branch-wrapping approach, while a narrow, symmetrical tree often suits vertical sections or a spiral.
Estimate the number of lights
Home Depot’s planning examples list approximately 300 mini lights per foot, 100 C6 lights per foot or 100 C9 lights per foot. These are starting figures, not a guarantee: coverage changes with tree width, branch density, spacing, bulb size and whether you wrap inner branches. Measure your tree and check the light manufacturer’s maximum-connect limit before buying or connecting strings.

Install and test them safely
- Check labels and packaging for indoor use. Select products tested by a recognized laboratory, such as a UL-listed indoor LED string, and match indoor or outdoor ratings to the location.
- Inspect insulation, sockets, plugs and connections. Discard any string with frayed wire, cracked sockets, loose connections or heat damage; do not repair damaged holiday wiring with tape.
- Test each string on the floor. Confirm that every section illuminates and that switches, timers and connectors work before you lift it.
- Unplug the string while placing it. Begin at the top for a spiral or vertical layout, or at the trunk for branch wrapping, and keep the plug end near the intended outlet.
- Work around the tree in consistent spacing. Push selected sections inward toward the trunk and leave other bulbs near the tips so the light has both depth and visible sparkle.
- Plug in temporarily and walk around the tree. Move a run if one side is bright while another has a dark pocket. Keep connections accessible rather than burying them beneath branches.
- Secure cords so they do not become a trip hazard. Keep plugs and connection points away from the water reservoir of a live tree.
Add garland or ribbon after the lights
Garland or ribbon is the visual base between the light layer and the ornaments. Use even swags or a controlled vertical weave rather than pulling one tight line around the outside. A loose, dimensional line can fill gaps without hiding the light clusters that make the tree glow.

Place it for depth
Anchor the ribbon at several branch junctions and let it dip naturally before moving to the next section. Alternate a few sections closer to the trunk with sections nearer the tips. Keep the material away from hot bulbs, sockets and plugs, and do not use so much that ornaments cannot hang securely.
Use texture without visual competition
One strongly textured garland is usually enough when the tree already has novelty ornaments. If the Spirit pieces are colorful or light-up, choose a quieter ribbon texture or a narrow metallic accent. Repeat the ribbon color in a few filler ornaments to connect the layers.
Hang Spirit ornaments in layers
Start with the largest and heaviest pieces
Place the largest or heaviest ornaments first, while the branches are still easy to see. Put a few deep inside the tree to create depth, then reserve the strongest outer positions for pieces whose characters, logos or silhouettes need to be recognized. Avoid placing all novelty ornaments at eye level or on one side.
- Divide the tree visually into four or more vertical zones. Put a signature Spirit character or licensed design in alternating zones rather than clustering them together.
- Vary height. Place one prominent piece in the lower third, another in the middle and another in the upper third, adjusting for the tree’s silhouette.
- Balance the back and sides as well as the front if the tree can be viewed from multiple directions.
- Hang medium ornaments around the larger pieces, using repeated colors and shapes to connect separate character groupings.
- Fill remaining gaps with small ornaments, but leave enough open branch space for the lights and ribbon to remain visible.
Match ornament size to branch strength
Test a branch by hanging a heavy ornament close to its junction rather than at the weakest tip. If the branch droops sharply, move the ornament inward, use a stronger branch or choose a lighter piece. Keep a large ornament from touching a hot bulb or pressing against a light socket.

Use hooks that fit the item
Christmas tree ornament hooks are the direct accessory for hanging Spirit ornaments. Select a hook that closes securely around the ornament loop and sits deep enough on the branch that normal movement will not dislodge it. For unusually heavy pieces, use a reinforced hanger or two attachment points if the ornament’s construction allows it; never force a hook through a fragile surface.
Protect children and pets
Keep fragile ornaments and pieces with detachable parts high and toward the back. Health Canada advises securing the tree, using certified lights, respecting wattage and avoiding overloaded outlets or damaged cords. Small parts can be choking hazards, and broken ornament fragments can injure hands or paws, so inspect the lower branches every day in a home with young children or animals.

Install the topper last
Leave the topper until the ornament distribution is complete. Check that the top branch can support it without bending into the lights. A heavy topper may require a support stem or a lighter alternative. Center it from the main viewing angle, then check the tree from the sides so it does not pull the upper section off balance.
Add the skirt or base treatment
Place the skirt, collar or other base treatment after the tree is stable and all electrical connections are final. Keep fabric, paper and other combustible materials away from hot adapters and power strips. Leave the tree stand and water access usable; do not hide a live tree’s reservoir beneath a tightly fitted cover.

Electrical and fire-safety checks
- Use only lights tested by a recognized laboratory and follow the manufacturer’s connection and wattage limits.
- Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The metal can become energized if wiring fails.
- Inspect sockets, wires, plugs and connectors before installation and remove damaged strings from service.
- Do not overload an outlet, power strip or extension cord. Add the wattage of every connected string and stay within the rating of the circuit and device.
- Keep the tree away from heat sources and exits, and keep cords out of walking paths.
- Turn the lights off before going to bed or leaving home. A timer can help, but confirm that it is rated for the connected load.
- Keep a live tree watered and remove it when it becomes dry. A dried tree ignites more readily than a fresh, watered one.
The safety advice is not merely theoretical. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 12,500 emergency-room-treated holiday-decoration injuries in 2003 and about 11,000 decoration-related emergency-room injuries in the 60 days around the holiday season in 2009. The same 2009 report cited National Fire Protection Association estimates of 240 dried-Christmas-tree fires, 16 deaths and $13 million in property damage per year.
Troubleshoot common decorating problems

Use three practical design formulas
Character-forward tree
Use a restrained ribbon, warm or neutral light color and a small number of large Spirit pieces distributed around the visible front and sides. Fill gaps with one or two repeating colors rather than adding more characters. This keeps the licensed designs legible from a distance.
Traditional tree with Spirit accents
Build the light and ribbon layers first, then treat Spirit ornaments as focal accents among classic shapes. Put the most recognizable pieces at the outer tips and use neutral ornaments inside the tree to create depth. Repeat the accent color in the lower and upper thirds for balance.

Low-glow, detail-rich tree
Use branch wrapping to place lights near the trunk and tips, then hang smaller ornaments in several depths. Keep the front open enough that the inner glow is visible. This approach rewards close viewing without requiring every branch tip to carry a decoration.
