Scout for the problem your account needs to solve, not for the banner label. Define the stage or team gap, compare the candidate pair with units you already own, confirm the copy and investment level you can realistically fund, then read the live scout’s Offering Rate and Notes screens. Pull only when the pair adds meaningful value and you can reach a sensible stopping point without sacrificing a higher-priority need.
A featured sync pair has a better chance of appearing than a non-featured 5★ pair, but the exact pool, rates, dates, currency rules and guarantees vary by scout. The in-game banner details are the final authority.
What a sync pair does for your account
A sync pair is the Trainer–Pokémon unit you place on a team. Three pairs form the foundation of every battle team, so a new addition matters only in relation to the roles and stages your roster can already handle. Rarity, release date and banner category are signals, not substitutes for checking what the pair actually contributes.

Before opening a scout menu, identify the outcome you want. A pair that looks spectacular in isolation may be a poor use of gems if it duplicates a stronger unit you own, needs more move levels than you can afford, or leaves you unable to cover a stage type that blocks your progress.
1. Define the account problem before looking at the banner
Write a one-sentence need
Use a sentence specific enough to test against a kit:
- I need a reliable special attacker for a type or stage where my current damage is weak.
- I lack a dependable weather, terrain or field setter.
- I need a durable support pair for Champion Stadium.
- I need a region, theme or role member for a restricted stage.
- I need speed, gauge, status control or sync acceleration that my teams cannot provide.
If you cannot state the need, postpone the pull. Banner excitement tends to replace a plan when the objective is undefined.
Rank gaps by consequence
Separate problems that stop you from clearing content from problems that merely make a clear slower or less comfortable. A specialist that unlocks a blocked mode generally deserves priority over a generalist who performs a role already covered by a stronger owned pair. Also note whether the gap affects several teams or only one unusual stage.

Read the complete move list, passive skills, sync move effects and grid options. Record what the pair does in each category below, then compare it with the best unit you already have for that job.

Test uniqueness against real stages
Ask whether the pair changes a team you actually play. A pair that is merely a stronger version of an owned attacker may be a luxury. A pair that supplies the only terrain setter, cleanser or region requirement you can field may be a priority even if its personal damage is modest.
3. Check how many copies and resources the pair needs
Evaluate the 1/5 kit first
Determine whether the pair performs its intended job at move level 1/5. Mark the moves, passives and grid tiles that are essential rather than optional. If the core function is locked behind additional copies, the initial scout is not the full cost of ownership.

Map breakpoints
List the improvements at each move level: a key multiplier, a new team buff, a reliability upgrade, a sync effect or a survivability tile. Then decide which breakpoint your account actually needs. Do not assume that 3/5 or 5/5 is mandatory because a showcase build uses it; decide whether the extra investment changes your clears.
Include non-copy costs
Account for rare candies, EX promotion, EX Role resources, gear, lucky skills and grid energy. A pair that is excellent only after several scarce upgrades may be less valuable than a pair that solves your problem immediately. The official Pokémon Masters EX explainer notes that rarer 5★ pairs can be difficult to power up unless they are scouted repeatedly while featured, so repeated copies should be treated as a real resource commitment.

4. Read the live scout before spending
Featured pairs have a higher chance of appearing than non-featured 5★ pairs, but other pairs can also be included. The official Sync Pair Scout Information notice states that you should use the Offering Rate section on the Sync Pair Scout screen to see available pairs and their respective rates. Open that screen every time; rates and pools are banner-specific and can change between reruns.

Keep a screenshot or written note of these details if you are comparing several banners. A headline 5★ percentage does not tell you the featured pair’s personal chance, the size of the pool or the cost of reaching a selection step.
5. Understand the scout categories without treating them as a power ranking
The official notices distinguish several categories. Category tells you about a banner’s pool and timing; it does not prove that every pair in one category is stronger than every pair in another.

The official category notice also warns that some exclusive pairs may appear outside their corresponding scout in the future. That possibility can support a saving decision, but it is not a promise of a particular rerun date or future rate. A maintained scout schedule can show recurring windows, yet the live in-game notice remains authoritative.
6. Treat Paid-Gem Tiered Scouts as a separate purchase
A Paid-Gem Tiered Scout is not simply a normal banner with a different name. The official August 27, 2025 notice defines Tiered Scouts as special Sync Pair Scouts that can only be used with Paid Gems. Each use advances to the next tier; the cited notice describes a sequence that reaches Tier 5. It also states that you cannot gain Scout Points in the Tiered Scout.
Compare a Tiered Scout by its complete package: the cost of every tier you intend to buy, the guaranteed selection or presents at each step, the eligible pool and the final stopping point. A tier can be rational when its guaranteed choice matches your plan and the Paid Gems are already budgeted. It is poor value when you buy early tiers hoping luck will finish the job, or when the presents do not help your account.

For context, a 2025 Paid-Gem 5★-Select Master Fair notice displayed a 12% overall 5★ appearance chance. That figure describes the cited scout’s total 5★ chance, not a guarantee that its featured pair appears at 12%, and it should not be transferred to another banner.

7. Set a stopping rule before the first pull
Decide in advance how far you are willing to go. Use the live banner’s stated selection or guarantee mechanism, the number of copies you need and the gems you can commit without harming a higher-priority plan.
- Write down your available free gems and Paid Gems separately.
- Choose the move level that solves your stated problem.
- Read the banner Notes to identify the cost and conditions for that outcome.
- Reserve enough resources for a future or recurring banner that covers a more urgent gap.
- Stop when you reach the planned copy level or when the banner’s own stopping point is no longer affordable.
There is no universal pity total established for every scout type. Do not assume that a number remembered from one banner applies to another. If you cannot reach the current banner’s own stopping point, treat the pull as a high-variance gamble and consider saving.

When two pairs look appealing, score both on the same questions instead of comparing trailers, tier lists or rarity labels.

Choose the pair with the highest account value per committed resource. The newest or rarest pair is not automatically the correct choice.

Which pairs are sensible priorities for a new account?
New accounts usually gain more from coverage than from a narrow upgrade. Favor a pair that can participate in several teams, supplies a missing support or field effect, and works at low move level. A specialist that requires a particular partner, multiple copies and several rare upgrades may be excellent later but inefficient as your first major investment.
- Prioritize a role your starter roster cannot perform reliably.
- Prefer self-sufficient kits when your supporting cast is small.
- Check whether the pair can survive and maintain gauge in long fights.
- Keep a reserve for a second role rather than spending every gem on one attacker.
- Reassess after building the pair; your next account gap may change.
Common scouting mistakes and how to recover
Pulling because the banner is limited
Limited timing does not create a team need. If you already have the role covered, save unless the pair adds a distinct utility or materially improves a stage you care about.
Using the total 5★ rate as the target’s rate
The total 5★ percentage includes every eligible 5★ outcome. Return to Offering Rate and read the featured pair’s individual line before estimating your odds.
Assuming one move level fits every pair
Some pairs function at 1/5; others have important grid or passive breakpoints later. Inspect the kit and budget the copies, candies and EX resources together.

Ignoring Paid-Gem restrictions
Confirm the currency icon and Notes before pressing scout. Tiered Scouts require Paid Gems and do not grant Scout Points, so progress assumptions from another banner can be wrong.
Continuing after the planned stopping point
Once the pair has reached the move level that solves your problem, stop unless a clearly identified upgrade is worth the remaining opportunity cost. If the banner becomes unaffordable before that point, accept the variance and preserve resources for a better fit.
Final pre-scout checklist
- Can I state the exact stage, role or team gap this pair addresses?
- What does it do that my strongest existing pair does not?
- Does the core kit work at the move level I can afford?
- Have I priced copies, grid tiles, EX investment and other scarce resources?
- What are the featured pair’s individual rate and the complete pool?
- What do the Notes say about currency, tickets, presents, selection and progress?
- When does the banner end in my game?
- What is my stopping point, and can I reach it?
- What upcoming or recurring option would these gems replace?
If any answer is missing, do not scout yet. Reopen the live banner details and make the decision from the account problem, the affordable kit and the actual rules on screen.
