You can customize a Steam Deck at three different levels: use SteamOS settings for safe home-screen changes, use Steam Input for per-game controls, or add Decky Loader with CSS Loader for extensive Gaming Mode styling. Start with the built-in options, then change one control layout or visual plugin at a time so every change remains easy to test and undo.
The exact options can differ between SteamOS stable, beta, and preview channels. Treat the menu names below as the current path to check on your Deck, not as a guarantee that every build exposes identical controls.
Choose the right customization layer
“Customize my Steam Deck” can mean changing the home screen, remapping buttons, or replacing the look of Gaming Mode. Those jobs use different systems:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Method | Setup effort | What it changes | How reversible it is | Update maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SteamOS appearance settings | Lowest; no add-on required | Supported home-screen and system appearance options, including the screensaver and certain contrast or background behaviors | High; return to the same setting and switch it off | Lowest, although labels and available options can change between SteamOS channels |
| Steam Input | Low; configure each game from its Library page | Buttons, paddles, trackpads, gyro, action layers, and other per-game input behavior | High; keep the default layout and switch back whenever needed | Low; layouts are stored per game, but you should retest after major game or SteamOS changes |
| Decky Loader with CSS Loader | Highest; install and maintain third-party components | Gaming Mode styling such as themes, colors, spacing, rounded corners, and custom boot screens | Good if you change one theme at a time and know how to disable it | Highest; SteamOS updates can temporarily break or hide plugins |
The boundary matters: CSS Loader changes the interface’s visual presentation; it does not replace Steam Input’s gamepad editor. If the problem is a button or trackpad, open the gamepad settings. If the problem is colors, fonts, spacing, or the composition of Gaming Mode, look at appearance settings or a CSS Loader theme.

Open SteamOS Customization
- Enter Gaming Mode and open Settings.
- Select Customization.
- Review every option shown by your current SteamOS build before installing anything else.
Valve’s Steam Deck documentation identifies a screensaver feature in Settings > Customization. The same update notes that background art can appear on the home screen when High Contrast is enabled. If you want a less visually busy interface, leave High Contrast off; if you want the home screen to use its background artwork, enable it and inspect the result on your own display.
Configure the screensaver
Use the screensaver controls on the Customization page to choose the behavior your build exposes. A screensaver can reduce the chance that a static image remains on screen while the Deck is idle, but the available timing or presentation choices are SteamOS-version dependent. If you do not see a screensaver section, check whether the Deck is on a different update channel before assuming the feature has been removed.
Use High Contrast deliberately
High Contrast is an accessibility setting, not merely a cosmetic theme switch. It changes the interface’s contrast treatment and, according to Valve’s update documentation, can make background art visible on the home screen. Turn it on, check readability in both bright and dark rooms, and turn it back off if menus become harder for you to scan.

Why built-in controls should come first
- They do not add a homebrew loader or a separate theme engine.
- They are easiest to troubleshoot because SteamOS owns the settings.
- They are least likely to require a repair after a system update.
- You can establish a known-good baseline before experimenting with third-party styling.
SteamOS can add, remove, or rename controls between stable, beta, and preview releases. Before following a screenshot made on another version, compare it with the Customization page currently installed on your Deck.
Remap controls for an individual game with Steam Input
Open the game’s layout editor
Steam Input works on a per-game basis. Valve’s support path is:
Rank #2
- Open Library in Gaming Mode.
- Highlight the game you want to change.
- Press the A button to open game details.
- Select the gamepad icon to open the control settings.
- Inspect the active layout before editing it.
- Change the inputs you need, then test them in a safe area of the game.
Valve describes this screen as the place where you can “view and edit your current layout.” The wording is important: you are editing the selected game’s layout, not changing every title on the Deck.
Plan a layout before changing buttons
Write down the action you are trying to make easier. For example, you might want a frequently used command on a rear paddle, a radial menu on a trackpad, or gyro aiming while a trigger is held. Changing several unrelated controls at once makes it difficult to identify which edit caused a problem.
Use the full range of Steam Input controls
Depending on the game and active layout, Steam Input can expose:
- Face buttons, triggers, bumpers, and clickable sticks.
- Rear buttons or paddles.
- Left and right trackpads, including directional or radial behaviors.
- Gyro input, often activated only while a chosen button is held.
- Action layers that temporarily switch a group of bindings.
Not every game presents identical options. A title may use a native controller profile, a keyboard-and-mouse profile, or a community layout. Read the current assignments first, because replacing a profile can remove useful behavior you did not intend to change.
Keep a rollback layout
Before making substantial edits, note the name of the active default or save a copy according to the options shown in the layout editor. Test one logical group at a time—movement, camera, menus, or shortcuts—and retain the default layout as your fallback. If the game stops responding, return to the gamepad icon and restore the original layout instead of trying to repair several unknown changes.

Test outside a critical moment
Use a tutorial, pause menu, practice area, or another low-risk location. Confirm that:
- Every face button still performs the expected action.
- Triggers reach their intended threshold.
- Trackpad clicks and swipe directions are not triggering accidental commands.
- Gyro activation starts and stops when expected.
- Action layers release cleanly when you let go of their modifier button.
Do not judge a layout only from the SteamOS menu. A game can interpret the same input differently once it has focus.
Open the on-screen keyboard and run hardware tests
Steam Support documents Steam + X as the shortcut for opening the on-screen keyboard. For a hardware-level check, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. Use the test suite to distinguish a physical input problem from a layout problem: if an input fails in the test screen, changing a game profile will not repair the hardware.
Reskin Gaming Mode with Decky Loader and CSS Loader
Understand what each component does
Decky Loader adds a plugin layer to the Steam interface. Its project describes pairing it with CSS Loader for community themes, rounded corners, custom boot screens, and other changes. CSS Loader is the styling engine: it applies visual rules to Steam’s interface, while Decky provides the plugin environment and quick-access controls.
DeckThemes describes CSS Loader as a styling engine for Steam that can customize both desktop Steam and Big Picture Mode. On a Steam Deck, that means the visual layer around Gaming Mode can look substantially different without changing the underlying Steam Input editor.

- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
Install CSS Loader through Decky’s store
- Install Decky Loader by following the current instructions published by the Decky project for your SteamOS build.
- Open Decky’s plugin store from the quick-access interface.
- Find CSS Loader and install it.
- Restart or reopen the interface if Decky requests it.
- Open CSS Loader and browse the themes available to your installation.
Exact buttons and prompts can change as Decky and SteamOS evolve. Use the current project instructions rather than copying an old screenshot or an installation command from an unmaintained post.
Install and activate a theme
- Open CSS Loader from Decky’s quick-access menu.
- Browse the available themes and read the theme’s description for compatibility notes.
- Install one theme first rather than adding a large bundle.
- Enable it, return to Gaming Mode, and inspect the Library, home screen, quick-access menu, and settings pages.
- Record which theme is enabled before installing another one.
A theme can look correct on one SteamOS release and misalign after another release changes the interface markup. Treat a theme as an optional layer, not as a permanent part of SteamOS.
Refresh the theme list
DeckThemes’ documented workflow uses CSS Loader’s quick-access menu to refresh the theme list. If a newly published theme does not appear, open CSS Loader, use its refresh control, and check again. If it still does not appear, confirm that the Deck has network access and that the theme remains compatible with the current CSS Loader version.
Change one visual layer at a time
Rounded corners, typography changes, color palettes, home-screen composition, and boot-screen modifications can overlap. Enable one theme or visual plugin, inspect the result, and only then add another. When something breaks, the newest change is the first one to disable.

Steam’s own library-management features can organize collections and presentation. You can combine those controls with a CSS Loader theme when you want both cleaner organization and a different interface style.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Community artwork tools may replace or add hero images, grid artwork, or logo art. Their names, installation methods, and compatibility change frequently, so verify that a tool is currently available for your SteamOS and Decky versions before installing it. Do not assume that an artwork tool and a CSS theme are interchangeable: artwork changes the images associated with games, while CSS changes the interface rules that display them.
A conservative artwork workflow is to change one game’s artwork, return to the Library, and check the same title in every view you use. If the art is cropped, missing, or difficult to read, revert that title before applying artwork to the rest of the library.

Use a change log
Write down the theme name, plugin name, and layout you changed. For control edits, record the previous layout. For CSS Loader, record the enabled theme order if the interface provides one. This takes less than a minute and prevents guesswork later.

- Open Decky’s quick-access menu.
- Disable the newest CSS Loader theme or visual plugin.
- Restart Gaming Mode or Steam if the interface asks you to.
- Check whether the problem disappears with the latest change removed.
- If necessary, disable additional themes one at a time until the interface returns to a usable state.
If Decky itself is missing, use the project’s current recovery or reinstall documentation for the SteamOS version installed on your Deck. Avoid deleting unrelated Steam files while trying to repair a plugin layer.
Expect maintenance after SteamOS updates
The Decky project warns: “Sometimes Decky will disappear on SteamOS updates.” This does not mean every update will break Decky, but it does mean third-party customization requires maintenance. After a major SteamOS update, check whether Decky loads, whether CSS Loader lists your themes, and whether the interface still renders correctly before adding anything new.
Troubleshoot common problems
The home screen does not show background art
- Open Settings > Customization and check whether High Contrast is enabled, because Valve documents that setting as the condition that can show background art.
- Confirm that you are looking at the Gaming Mode home screen rather than a different Library view.
- Check the current SteamOS channel and update notes if the option is absent or renamed.
A remapped button does nothing
- Return to the game’s Library details and select the gamepad icon.
- Confirm that the intended layout is active for this title.
- Check whether the game expects controller input or keyboard-and-mouse input.
- Run Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs to rule out a hardware fault.
- Restore the default layout if several edits have made the profile unclear, then add one change and retest.
A theme is missing or looks broken
- Refresh the theme list from CSS Loader’s quick-access menu.
- Disable the newest theme or plugin first.
- Restart Gaming Mode.
- Check the theme and Decky documentation for compatibility with the installed SteamOS release.
Decky vanished after an update
That behavior is explicitly acknowledged in Decky’s documentation. Treat it as an update-compatibility issue rather than evidence that your Steam Deck hardware failed. Follow the current Decky recovery instructions, and keep SteamOS’s built-in appearance controls available as a fallback while third-party components catch up.
Practical customization recipes
Safest visual refresh
- Open Settings > Customization.
- Try the available screensaver settings.
- Test High Contrast if you want the documented background-art behavior.
- Stop there if the built-in result meets your needs.
Comfort-focused control setup
- Choose one frequently played game.
- Open its Library details and select the gamepad icon.
- Save or note the default layout.
- Move one frequent action to a paddle, trackpad, or action layer.
- Test in a safe area and keep the change only if it improves control without creating accidental inputs.
Full interface makeover
- Confirm that SteamOS itself is stable and that you can use Gaming Mode normally.
- Install Decky Loader using its current project instructions.
- Install CSS Loader from Decky’s built-in store.
- Enable one compatible theme.
- Refresh the theme list when needed and record the active theme.
- After every SteamOS update, verify Decky and CSS Loader before adding more plugins.
What to change first
For a dependable Steam Deck, begin with Settings > Customization. Use Steam Input when the goal is a better control scheme for one game. Choose Decky Loader and CSS Loader only when you specifically want a broad Gaming Mode reskin and accept the added maintenance. Keeping those layers separate makes it clear whether a problem belongs to SteamOS, a game layout, or a third-party visual plugin—and gives you a straightforward path back to the default experience.
