To stop a particular game from appearing in Steam’s recommendations, open that game’s Store page and choose Ignore (sometimes labeled Not Interested). Valve says an ignored product is removed from future recommendations and featured spots. For broader control, use the Store’s Customize controls, Discovery Queue settings, Interactive Recommender exclusions, and search filters. These controls have different scopes: ignoring a title is persistent across Steam’s recommendation systems, while most category and session filters apply only to the Store area where you set them.
Which Steam control should you use?
Steam does not have one universal blocklist for every page. The correct control depends on whether you want to remove one title, change the kinds of products shown in a Store section, adjust a discovery queue, or narrow a search.

Start with Ignore when the problem is a single title. Use Customize or Discovery Queue settings when the unwanted results belong to a category, and use search filters when you are actively looking for a better-defined set of games.
Hide one game from recommendations
Use the game’s Store page
- Open Steam and go to the Store.
- Search for the unwanted game and open its product page.
- Find the page’s preference control and select Ignore or Not Interested. Steam’s wording may differ between Store surfaces.
- Confirm the choice if Steam presents a confirmation prompt.
Valve’s documented behavior is specific: the ignored product is excluded from future recommendations and featured spots. That is the appropriate setting when you never want Steam to promote a particular title, regardless of whether it first appeared on the home page, in a queue, or in a feed.

Ignore a title while browsing recommendations
If the game is already visible in the Discovery Queue or Recommendation Feed, use the Ignore or Not Interested action on that item instead of opening another page. Valve describes the same title-level action as available for products shown in those surfaces.
What Ignore does not promise
Ignore is not documented as a universal content block. The guarantee covers future recommendations and featured spots, not every possible appearance on Steam. You may still be able to find the title through direct search, a saved link, a community page, a friend’s activity, or another Store page. Treat Ignore as a recommendation preference rather than parental-control software, a license restriction, or a deletion command.
Customize the Steam Store’s product categories
Steam’s home page and other Store sections expose visible Customize controls. These controls are useful when recommendations are technically relevant but belong to product types you do not want to browse.

Open the relevant Customize panel
- Open the Steam Store home page or the browse section that is showing unwanted results.
- Look for Customize near the section heading or its browsing controls.
- Review the available inclusion and exclusion switches.
- Turn off the categories that do not belong in that Store section, then return to the page to see the revised results.
Categories Steam documents
- Games already owned: hide products you already have when you are shopping for something new.
- Early Access: remove or include games still in development.
- Software: keep non-game applications out of a game-focused view.
- Downloadable content: prevent DLC listings from crowding out full games.
- Pre-purchases: exclude unreleased products offered for advance purchase.
- Operating system: narrow results to the platforms relevant to your computer.
These switches describe what a particular Store section should show. They do not turn a genre or tag into a permanent Steam-wide ban, and they do not replace Ignore for a specific title.
Control the Discovery Queue
The Discovery Queue is a separate discovery surface with its own customization controls. Open the queue from the Store and use its customization option before starting or continuing the list.
Queue options
- Open Discovery Queue in the Steam Store.
- Open the queue’s customization controls.
- Choose whether to include Early Access products.
- Choose whether to include unreleased titles.
- Set the operating-system inclusion you need.
- Save or apply the settings if Steam displays an explicit button, then return to the queue.
If an unwanted game is already in the queue, mark that individual product as Ignore there as well. Queue filters determine which kinds of products can enter the list; Ignore handles the title itself.

Historical queue numbers and changing labels
Valve’s 2014 Discovery Update described a personalized queue containing 12 titles and a daily refresh with new and top-selling releases. Those figures and labels describe the feature at that time, not a promise about the current Store interface. Steam’s discovery surfaces have changed, so do not assume that every account currently sees exactly 12 entries or the same refresh schedule.
Use the Interactive Recommender without changing your global Ignore list
The Interactive Recommender learns from your play and revisit behavior and is one Store discovery element alongside the Discovery Queue and other recommendation surfaces. Valve provides an exclusion control for some recently played games.
- Open Steam’s Interactive Recommender.
- Open its exclusion or preference controls.
- Review the recently played games Steam offers for exclusion.
- Exclude the titles you do not want this recommender to use.
- Refresh or revisit the recommender to see the adjusted list.
By default, the recommender’s excluded set is drawn from your global Steam Ignore list. The important distinction is direction of change: toggling an exclusion inside the Interactive Recommender does not change the Steam-wide Ignore setting. If a game must be ignored across Steam’s recommendations and featured placements, set Ignore on that game’s Store page.
Filter Steam searches toward games you actually want
Filtering is often more useful than hiding when you are trying to discover something. Steam search and browse pages support several dimensions that let you describe the results you want.
Apply tag filters
Use tags to narrow a broad catalog to themes, genres, mechanics, moods, or other descriptors shown by Steam. Combine multiple relevant tags rather than relying on a single broad label; the available tag interface and ordering can vary by page.

Filter by Steam features
Steam features identify supported capabilities and modes. Select only the features that matter to your setup or play style, such as a particular multiplayer or controller capability when those options are presented.

Choose an operating system
Set the operating-system filter to avoid results that cannot run on your computer. This is a search constraint, not the same as the operating-system switch in a Store section’s Customize panel.
Select a language
Use the language filter when text or audio support is essential. Check the game’s own language details before purchasing because a search filter narrows discovery results; it does not independently verify every store-page claim.
Search filters find matching products, while Ignore suppresses a known unwanted product in recommendation and featured placements. Use both when you know what to avoid and what you want to find.

Valve’s Steam Visibility documentation says Steam automatically customizes elements of the Store for every user and lets player preferences drive visibility. Recommendations are not based only on genre.
- Games you have played or added to your wishlist can influence front-page personalization.
- Friends’ games and wishlists can affect what Steam surfaces socially.
- Friend recommendations and followed curators provide additional signals.
- Regional top sellers contribute popularity context for your market.
- New releases and updates can receive visibility even when you have not played similar games recently.
The Interactive Recommender adapts as you play or revisit games, then is periodically retrained using broader changes in releases and player behavior. That means your recommendations can change over time without a single setting being altered. Ignoring a title removes that product from the documented recommendation and featured-placement paths; it does not rewrite every signal that Steam uses for other games.
Practical setups for common problems
You keep seeing one franchise or title
Open the specific product page and choose Ignore. If the same product is visible in a queue or feed, you can apply the action there. Do not rely only on a tag filter, because tags are discovery criteria rather than a title-level exclusion.

Your home page is crowded with DLC and software
Open Customize on the affected Store section and turn off downloadable content and software. If owned games or pre-purchases are also irrelevant, disable those categories in the same panel. The change is aimed at that Store area, so another page may expose its own controls.

Open the queue’s customization controls and disable Early Access and unreleased titles. If a particular game remains visible elsewhere, use Ignore on its product page because queue category settings do not function as a global title block.
The Interactive Recommender is dominated by games you already played
Use the recommender’s own recently played exclusions. This changes the recommender’s input set without changing your Steam-wide Ignore list. Keep Ignore for products you never want featured or recommended anywhere that Valve’s documented exclusion applies.
You want better suggestions, not fewer suggestions
Use tags, Steam features, operating-system, and language filters to define a search. Wishlisting games you genuinely want and following curators whose recommendations match your taste also provide the preference and social signals Valve identifies as part of Store personalization.

Check which surface is showing it
First identify whether the title is in a recommendation card, a featured placement, Discovery Queue, Interactive Recommender, search results, a community area, or a friend activity view. Ignore is documented for recommendation and featured placements; a direct search result is a different function.

Confirm the action was applied to the correct product
Some games have editions, bundles, demos, DLC, or related products. Open the exact product page for the item you want excluded and verify that the page shows the Ignore or Not Interested state after you select it. Ignoring one related product does not establish that every associated listing is ignored.

Look for a local filter instead of a global setting
If the issue is a category, reopen Customize on the Store section that displays it. If the issue is the queue, change the queue’s own controls. If it is the Interactive Recommender, use its exclusion panel. Steam’s controls are intentionally scoped, so a change in one surface may not alter another.
Allow for interface changes
Valve updates the Store, and labels or control placement can move. Search the current page for Customize, Ignore, Not Interested, or the relevant queue/recommender preference rather than assuming an older menu path is still present. The documented behavior matters more than an exact historical button position.
What the older Discovery documentation tells you
Valve’s 2014 Discovery Update reported more than 1,300 new titles in nine months and more than 3,700 titles available on Steam at that time. It also introduced the personalized 12-title Discovery Queue described above. These numbers are historical context, not current catalog counts or a forecast of how many products Steam adds today.
The enduring lesson from that documentation is the separation of discovery and control: Steam can personalize a large, changing catalog, while the player can mark individual products as ignored and tune the kinds of products admitted to particular Store surfaces.
A concise maintenance checklist
- Use Ignore on the exact product page for a title you never want recommended or featured.
- Use Customize on the Store section that is producing unwanted product categories.
- Use Discovery Queue settings for Early Access, unreleased titles, and operating-system scope inside that queue.
- Use Interactive Recommender exclusions for recently played games you want removed from that recommender’s input.
- Use search filters for tags, Steam features, operating system, and language when looking for desired games.
- Remember that Ignore is not documented as a universal block for direct search, community, friend, or every other Steam page.
For most readers, the fastest solution is simple: ignore individual games, customize the Store section that is noisy, and use search filters to steer discovery toward the games you actually want.
