Chrome lets you show or hide its generated print headers and footers, but the print dialog does not offer controls to rewrite their text or position individual fields. To use custom wording or placement, save the page as a PDF and edit that file afterward.
Show or hide Chrome’s print headers and footers
- Open the webpage in Chrome and open Print. Use Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on macOS.
- Expand More settings.
- Under Options, find Headers and footers. Turn it on to include Chrome’s generated material or off to omit it.
- Review the print preview, then choose your printer or Save as PDF.
The labels and their exact placement in the dialog can vary by platform and Chrome version. The consumer navigation above is described in Chrome Community guidance rather than a current official consumer-help specification. In managed Chrome environments, the policy default is that users can decide unless an administrator controls the setting.
What you can customize—and what you can’t
Available Chrome Community guidance describes the print-dialog control as an on/off choice. It does not describe an in-dialog editor for changing the generated text, removing just one field, adding a company name, or moving individual fields. This limitation is based on community product guidance, not an official Chrome feature specification, and may not describe every build.
If the generated information is acceptable but you do not want it on the page, turn the option off. If you need custom text or placement, save the PDF and make the changes in a PDF editor. Chrome’s PDF help confirms that its viewer can add text and save a copy with edits; it does not document dedicated header-and-footer placement controls.

If “Headers and footers” is missing
- Check Margins: One Chrome Community user reported that changing Margins from None to Default made the option appear. Treat this as a troubleshooting lead from one report, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check whether the browser is managed: A work or school administrator may control whether headers and footers print, or whether users may override the setting.
- Reopen More settings: The control is described under More settings > Options; its presentation can vary by platform and version.
When Chrome is managed by an organization
Chrome Enterprise policy documentation covers ChromeOS and Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The Print headers and footers policy “Lets you force or prevent users from printing headers and footers.” The documented default allows users to decide, and administrators can allow users to override the policy. If the setting is fixed or unavailable on a managed device, ask your administrator whether this policy applies.
