To remap controls in Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics on Nintendo Switch, use the console’s system-wide Change Button Mapping screen. While a GBA game is running, press ZL + ZR to open the Suspend Menu, then press X to open the User Guide and check the original GBA-to-Switch layout. Nintendo does not provide a separate, per-game remapping menu in the GBA library.

What you need before changing GBA controls

Game Boy Advance titles on Switch are delivered through the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics library. Access requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Once the library is installed and a game is running, button changes are made at the console level rather than inside an individual game.

This distinction matters because the assignment applies to the selected controller across the Switch system. It is not a control profile saved inside one GBA title, and it is not stored in the controller itself. If you pair that controller with another Switch, you should expect to configure the other console separately.

Check the original GBA layout first

If you are unsure which Switch button represents an original GBA control, open the in-game guide before changing anything:

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
  • Comes with charging cable (USB C to USB A)
  1. Start a Game Boy Advance title from the Nintendo Classics library.
  2. Press ZL and ZR together to open the Suspend Menu.
  3. Press X to open the User Guide.
  4. Review the displayed GBA-to-Switch mapping, then return to the game.

The guide is useful when you want to change only one action. For example, you can identify which current button performs A or B, then move that function without guessing. The Suspend Menu shortcut is separate from the game’s own buttons, so keep ZL and ZR easy to reach if you use save states, rewind or other menu features exposed by the library.

How to remap GBA controls on Switch

Nintendo’s system path is the same whether you are playing handheld or docked. Begin at the HOME Menu, not inside the GBA application.

  1. Press the HOME button to open the HOME Menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Select Controllers and Sensors.
  4. Select Change Button Mapping.
  5. On the left side of the screen, choose the paired Joy-Con or Pro Controller you want to configure.
  6. Select Change.
  7. Select the button you want to alter, then choose the new function you want it to perform.
  8. To remove a button action completely, choose Disable.
  9. Select Back, then select Done to confirm.

The selected controller is now using the new assignment. Return to the GBA game and test the controls in a safe area before starting a difficult section. If you use more than one controller, repeat the procedure for each paired controller that needs a different layout.

Which Nintendo controllers can be remapped?

Nintendo lists the following controllers as supported targets for button remapping:

Rank #2
Nintendo Switch™ 2 Pro Controller
  • HD Rumble 2
  • Motion controls
  • Built-in amiibo functionality*
  • Capture Button
  • C Button for GameChat**
Controller Remapping support Typical use
Joy-Con 2 (L) Supported Handheld or separated-controller play
Joy-Con 2 (R) Supported Handheld or separated-controller play
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller Supported Docked play with a full-size controller
Joy-Con (L) Supported Handheld or separated-controller play
Joy-Con (R) Supported Handheld or separated-controller play
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Supported Docked play with a full-size grip

Switch Lite controls can also be remapped. The exact feel of a layout depends on the hardware in your hands: d-pad design, button reach, grip and portability are personal preferences rather than measurements published by Nintendo. Nintendo’s compatibility information confirms that these controllers can be configured, but it does not establish comparative comfort, latency or durability results.

What cannot be reassigned

Button mapping has fixed limits. Nintendo says the following inputs cannot be reassigned:

  • Power
  • Volume
  • HOME
  • SYNC

You also cannot turn stick-direction functionality into a button input. In other words, a direction on an analog stick cannot be converted into a separate face-button command through this menu. Plan your GBA layout around the buttons and stick functions the system exposes rather than trying to create new virtual buttons.

Layouts that make GBA games feel more natural

The best arrangement depends on whether you are trying to reproduce a familiar GBA posture or simply make a particular game easier to operate. Start with the original layout shown in the User Guide, then change only the actions that feel awkward.

Handheld setup

For handheld play, begin with the built-in controls and preserve the button positions you can reach without shifting your grip. Many players prefer the two primary GBA actions on the face buttons that fall naturally under the right thumb. Put L and R on shoulder buttons that you can press without loosening your hold on the console. Leave Select and Start on clearly different buttons so they are not confused with gameplay actions or the Suspend Menu shortcut.

Make one change at a time and test it in the game. If A and B feel reversed, swap those two functions first; do not redesign every button until you know the first change solved the problem. For platformers and action games, prioritize rapid access to the two main actions. For menu-heavy role-playing games, prioritize a layout that lets you reach Start and Select deliberately.

Single Joy-Con setup

A single Joy-Con keeps the setup portable, but its compact face and shoulder-button arrangement may require more deliberate choices. Identify the GBA functions you use most often and place them on the buttons you can reach without rotating the controller. Keep less frequent functions, such as Select, on a button that is still accessible but visually distinct from the primary action buttons.

Because the Joy-Con is small, test the layout while holding it in the exact position you use during play. A mapping that looks logical on the settings screen can feel awkward if two frequently used actions are on opposite edges of the controller.

Docked setup with a Pro Controller

A Pro Controller is a supported remapping target and provides a full-size grip for docked play. Use the same process in System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping, selecting the paired Pro Controller before choosing Change.

For a GBA-like feel, assign the two primary actions to the face buttons that match your muscle memory, then place L and R on the shoulder buttons. Keep Start and Select separated from those actions. The Pro Controller’s larger grip can make long sessions more comfortable for some players, but Nintendo has not published a comparative comfort or latency test, so treat that choice as personal preference.

How to choose between portability and comfort

Priority Practical choice What to optimize
Play anywhere Built-in Switch or Switch Lite controls Reachability while holding the console
Small separate controller One Joy-Con Keeping frequent actions close together
Docked, full-size grip Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Face-button reach and shoulder-button access
Switch 2 controller setup Joy-Con 2 or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller Matching the layout to the paired controller

There is no single universally correct GBA arrangement. A player who learned the original handheld controls may want the same relative positions, while someone accustomed to modern console layouts may prefer a different face-button assignment. Use the guide’s default map as a reference, not as a requirement.

Understanding system-wide mappings

The mapping is saved on the Switch system rather than on the physical controller. That has several practical consequences:

PDP Afterglow Wave Wireless RGB Gaming Controller for Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo Switch Lite, OLED, RGB LED Lighting, App Customization, Rechargeable 20-Hr Battery, 2 Mappable Back Buttons, Black
  • This controller also works with Nintendo Switch 2 - C Button not available
  • Eight RGB zones with four pre-set modes for dynamic lighting combinations
  • Two programmable quick-action back buttons for customizable gameplay
  • Built-in motion controls for immersive gameplay
  • Ergonomic design for extended comfort
  • Changing a controller’s assignments changes how that controller behaves on the console until you change them again.
  • The settings are not embedded in the Joy-Con or Pro Controller.
  • Pairing the same controller with another Switch does not automatically carry over the configuration.
  • If another person uses the console, tell them that the buttons have been customized or restore the layout they expect before handing over the controller.

For a shared console, write down unusual assignments or take a screenshot of the completed mapping. That makes it easier to reproduce the setup after a controller is replaced or another player changes the settings.

Troubleshooting remapping problems

The GBA app has no control-remap menu

That is expected. Nintendo directs GBA players to the console’s Change Button Mapping screen rather than a per-game remap page. Leave the game with the HOME button and follow System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping.

The controller does not appear in the selection screen

Confirm that the controller is paired with the Switch you are configuring and that it is one of Nintendo’s supported remapping targets. The controller must be selected on the left side of the Change Button Mapping screen before the Change option can be used. If you are configuring a different controller than the one in your hands, select the correct paired device before editing any assignments.

A button still performs an unexpected action

Return to the mapping screen and verify the assignment for the exact controller being used. It is easy to change a left Joy-Con and then play with the right Joy-Con, or to configure a Pro Controller while the game is receiving input from another paired device. Use the User Guide’s original map as a reference, then test one changed button at a time.

You cannot map a system button or stick direction

Power, Volume, HOME and SYNC are excluded from reassignment. Stick directions also cannot be converted into button inputs. Choose an available controller button for the game action instead of trying to assign one of these restricted inputs.

Your layout disappeared when using another Switch

Mappings are stored on the original Switch system, not in the controller. Configure the controller again on the second console using the same six-step path, then select Back and Done to save it there.

A practical setup checklist

  • Confirm that your Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership provides access to the GBA Nintendo Classics library.
  • Open a game and use ZL + ZR, then X, to view the original mapping.
  • Decide whether you are optimizing for handheld portability, a single Joy-Con or docked full-size play.
  • Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping.
  • Select the exact paired controller you will use.
  • Move only the buttons that feel wrong, beginning with A and B if those actions are reversed for you.
  • Keep L and R on reachable shoulder buttons and leave Start and Select clearly distinguishable.
  • Use Disable only when you deliberately want a button to have no assigned function.
  • Select Back and Done, then test the layout in the game.
  • Record unusual assignments if the console is shared or the controller will also be used elsewhere.

Bottom line for GBA control customization

Switch gives you meaningful control over GBA games, but the setting lives at the console level. Use the in-game guide to identify the default layout, then make changes through the system’s Change Button Mapping screen. Joy-Con and Pro Controller families, as well as Switch Lite controls, are supported; system buttons and stick directions have fixed restrictions. A small, deliberate adjustment—usually putting A, B, L and R where your hands expect them—produces a more comfortable setup without sacrificing access to the Suspend Menu.
