Choose the output aspect ratio before you confirm. The grid is a composition aid, not a rule you must follow.
What the Rule of Thirds grid shows
The Rule of Thirds divides an image into nine equal parts with two horizontal and two vertical lines. The four intersections are useful places to position a subject or focal point; placing a subject along one of the lines can also create a balanced composition. Adobe describes the rule as a photography composition guideline, and its Rule of Thirds guide explains the grid.
Crop with the grid: a general workflow
-
Open the image in an editor with a Crop tool, such as Photoshop or Lightroom, and select the tool.
-
Show the Rule of Thirds overlay. If the editor offers several guides, choose the one with two horizontal and two vertical lines.

Set the crop boundary by dragging its corners or edges. Reposition the image within the frame, if needed, until the subject is near an intersection or along a third.
-
Check the space around the subject. For a person, animal, or vehicle looking or moving in one direction, leaving open space in front of it is a useful compositional choice.
-
For a landscape, try placing the horizon on the upper third when the foreground is important, or the lower third when the sky is important. Check that the horizon is level.
-
Choose the aspect ratio that suits where the image will be used, then review the full frame before confirming the crop.

Crop in Photoshop
-
Select the Crop tool. Its adjustable border marks the area that will remain; drag a corner or edge handle to change the crop.
-
Use the crop overlay options to display the Rule of Thirds guides, then reposition the image or crop boundary to improve subject placement and framing.
-
Choose an aspect-ratio preset in the Crop tool options. Adobe documents presets including 1:1 square, 4:5 portrait, 5:7, 2:3 (4:6), and 16:9 widescreen. The right choice depends on the image’s destination.

Before committing, decide whether to enable Delete Cropped Pixels. Leave it disabled if you want to retain the cropped-away areas for later adjustment; enabling it discards those pixels.

Use the Aspect menu to select a ratio, or adjust the crop freely. Use the Straighten control if the horizon needs leveling.

Refine the framing and leave the crop when it looks right. Adobe says Lightroom cropping is non-permanent, so you can modify it later.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the frame before the final crop
An appealing composition can still be unsuitable for its intended use if the crop has the wrong proportions. Decide whether you need a square, portrait, print, or widescreen frame before finalizing; changing the ratio can force you to trade off subject placement, negative space, or background detail. Photoshop’s documented presets include several common ratios, while Lightroom offers an Aspect menu and free adjustment.
When to use—or ignore—the grid
The overlay makes placement easier to judge and repeat, but it cannot decide what matters most in a particular image. Use it to test subject position, line alignment, and surrounding space; move away from the intersections if that better serves the photograph. Adobe presents the Rule of Thirds as a useful aid while recognizing that photographers can break it for creative effect. No numerical improvement in image quality is established by the cited guidance.
