There is no one thumbnail size that works for every real estate portfolio. Start with the image card or listing component on your website: find its displayed dimensions and crop behavior, then make an optimized copy of the photo for that space. Keep the original master so you can create other sizes without losing image quality.
1. Choose a property photo that works at thumbnail size
Use a photo you own or have permission to use, and check the applicable photographer agreement. At small sizes, a clear subject and recognizable property feature matter more than fine detail. A wide exterior view, distinctive living area, or other feature that communicates the listing can work well, depending on the portfolio card and its context.
For listing photography, realestate.com.au recommends staging, natural light, a mix of interior, exterior and aerial images, and a sequence that begins with a hero exterior image. That is guidance for its listings, not a universal portfolio design rule. See realestate.com.au’s image and video requirements.
2. Find the right dimensions and crop
Inspect the portfolio card in the website builder or page layout before exporting. Note the rendered width and height, whether the image keeps its aspect ratio, and whether the site crops it to fill a fixed box. If the card uses a cover-style crop such as CSS object-fit: cover, keep the important part of the property near the center or otherwise inside the crop-safe area.

Do not treat portal image specifications as a universal website thumbnail standard. For example, realestate.com.au recommends 2000 × 1500 pixels at 4:3 for listing images. Rightmove recommends a 3:2 upload ratio and specifies 224 × 149 pixels for search-summary images and 656 × 437 pixels for its detail gallery. These dimensions serve those portals and presentation contexts, not every agent portfolio.
3. Make and export a thumbnail copy
- Keep the original full-resolution photo as your master.
- Duplicate it, then crop the copy to match the target component’s ratio and focal area.
- Resize the copy to suit the actual display and any higher-resolution screens your site supports. Avoid uploading an image significantly larger than its displayed size unless your builder generates responsive renditions.
- Export in the format and quality supported by your site, using RGB/sRGB color where available. Check the resulting file size and appearance rather than relying on a single compression setting.
- Upload the copy and preview it at the actual card size on a narrow phone screen and a wide desktop screen.
Adobe Portfolio says its platform creates renditions at different widths, preserves aspect ratio, and serves a suitable size based on screen size and device resolution. Its documentation describes generated renditions up to 3840 pixels wide for high-resolution displays. If your builder handles responsive image sizes automatically, check its output before creating extra oversized copies. See Adobe Portfolio’s image rendition documentation.

4. Check file limits and image rules for the destination
Upload limits can differ even within one platform depending on the upload route. realestate.com.au’s general listing requirements allow images up to 20 MB, while its Agent Admin instructions for manual uploads require files under 2.5 MB and give a 2000 × 1125-pixel 16:9 example. Check the relevant, current instructions for your own publishing route before batch-exporting.
Adobe Portfolio recommends keeping thumbnails and small images under 500 KB for best performance on its platform. That is platform-specific advice, not a universal file-size limit or a guarantee of a particular page-speed score. Listing restrictions are also platform-specific. realestate.com.au prohibits text overlays such as “Sold” or “Under Offer,” contact details, excessive branding, and collages in listing photos. A portfolio site may have different rules, so check the destination’s current requirements.
5. Write contextual alt text
Alt text should communicate the useful information in the image in the context of the page—not repeat a string of search keywords. For example, if the image shows a relevant feature, concise text such as “Renovated kitchen with island bench in the Glenview property” may help a visitor understand the listing. Describe only what the photo actually shows.

The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative advises that informative images have short text alternatives conveying essential information; decorative images should use empty alt text (alt=""); and images that function as links or buttons should describe their function. Follow its Images Tutorial for the appropriate treatment in your page context.
6. Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems
- The subject is cut off: The component is cropping the image. Reposition the crop or choose a source photo with more room around the focal point; preview again at the card’s real dimensions.
- The thumbnail looks soft: Check that the exported pixel dimensions are adequate for the rendered size and any high-density display rendition. Avoid enlarging a small source image beyond its useful detail.
- The file is rejected: Check both the image dimensions and the upload route’s file-size and format requirements. A platform may have different limits for manual uploads and other submission paths.
- The image looks different on mobile: The site may use a different crop or rendition at narrow widths. Preview both breakpoints and adjust the focal point or provide a separate rendition if the builder supports it.
- Important content is missing for screen-reader users: Add concise, contextual alt text to informative property images. Use empty alt text only when an image is genuinely decorative.
