How Shopify chooses an image for a shared link
A social app or messaging service reads information from the URL you share and decides how to display it. The preview may include an image, title, and description, but the appearance varies by platform and surface; a rich card is not guaranteed everywhere.
Shopify’s image selection depends on the page and theme. Shopify says its free themes use the featured image for product pages, collection pages, and blog posts. Pages without a featured image, such as the homepage or an About page, use the store’s social sharing image. A theme’s own settings or hard-coded image can take precedence over the Preferences fallback. Shopify’s social sharing image guidance explains the settings and troubleshooting; Shopify’s page_image documentation describes the Liquid object and fallback behavior.
Set the store-wide fallback image
- In Shopify Admin, open Online Store > Preferences.
- Find Social sharing image and SEO.
- Add or replace the social sharing image, then save.
This image is used when a page has no other image available. If a shared link still shows another image, inspect theme settings and code before assuming the Preferences image failed to save. Some themes only use images configured in their own social media settings.

Give important pages their own preview image
For product, collection, and blog pages using a Shopify free theme, set the page’s featured image to the image you want associated with that URL. This gives those pages a more relevant preview than relying on the store-wide fallback. For pages without featured images, including the homepage and About page in Shopify’s examples, check which image the active theme provides and whether it falls back to the store setting.
Shopify’s page_image Liquid object represents the page image and supports fallback Open Graph image tags when a theme does not include those tags. Actual output still depends on the active theme.

Check the title and description as well as the image
A preview can display text alongside its image. Shopify notes that a page title and description are often shown. The page_description Liquid object supplies a brief description for search listings and social previews.
In theme metadata, the commonly used Open Graph properties have distinct roles: og:title identifies the shared title, og:url the preferred URL, og:type the content type, og:description the summary, and og:image the image. Shopify’s Open Graph theme explanation describes these patterns, but its article dates to 2017, so verify the implementation in your current theme rather than copying old snippets blindly.

Inspect the active theme before editing Liquid
Before adding metadata, inspect the active theme’s page <head> output and any snippets or settings that generate social tags. Themes vary, and adding a second set of tags can create conflicting or duplicate values. Shopify documents automatic og:image fallback tag generation from page_image when a theme does not already include those tags.
- Check whether the theme already emits
og:title,og:url,og:type,og:description, andog:image. - Look for social image controls in the theme editor; those may outrank the Preferences image.
- Only add or change Liquid metadata when the existing page image and fallback behavior do not meet your needs.
If you edit theme code, make a copy or otherwise preserve a recoverable version before changing it. Recheck the output after theme updates, which can alter theme files or settings.

Debug a missing or outdated link preview
- Inspect the URL’s image source. Check theme code first, then theme settings, then the Preferences fallback. This order helps find a theme-provided image that takes precedence.
- Check the page itself. Confirm the product, collection, or blog post has the intended featured image and that the shared URL is the page you configured.
- Inspect what the platform reads. Shopify names Twitter’s Card Validator, Facebook’s crawler/Sharing Debugger, and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector as preview inspection tools. Their availability and behavior can change; use the tool provided by the relevant platform if accessible.
- Refresh cached preview data where supported. Shopify advises refreshing Facebook’s saved link data after changing an image. A changed Shopify setting does not necessarily replace a platform’s already-saved preview immediately.
- Recheck after changes. Inspect the exact URL again; preview tools show what a platform reads, not a promise that every app or Instagram surface will render the same card.
When native settings are not enough
Use the built-in featured-image and fallback behavior first. Theme code can provide more control, but it requires code access and may need attention after theme updates. A Shopify app can offer page-level image and metadata controls without editing theme code, though it adds setup and potentially recurring cost. For example, the PreviewBuilder App Store listing advertises templates and image/meta customization for products, collections, pages, blogs, and articles; the listing is vendor-described functionality, not a guarantee of results.
