To create convincing PlayStation 1-style graphics, build a coordinated rendering pipeline rather than simply reducing polygon counts. Use deliberately simple meshes, small unfiltered textures, vertex colors, screen-space vertex snapping, affine texture mapping, reduced color depth, dithering, a low internal resolution, and restrained lighting with fog. Each effect should be adjustable per asset: snapping supplies the characteristic jitter, affine mapping creates texture swimming, subdivision keeps that swimming readable, and palette and resolution limits complete the period look.

The workflow below is written for Godot, but the visual principles apply in any engine that lets you control mesh precision, texture sampling, shader math, color quantization, and render resolution.

What actually creates the PS1 look

Low-poly geometry is only the foundation. A modern renderer can make a low-polygon model look clean, stable, and contemporary unless you also reproduce the limitations that shaped early 3D graphics. The recognizable appearance comes from several constraints operating at once:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Coarse geometry: silhouettes are built from a restrained number of large faces.
  • Integer-like vertex precision: vertices are snapped in screen space, producing controlled jitter as the camera or object moves.
  • Affine texture mapping: UVs are interpolated without modern perspective correction, so textures can wobble or swim on oblique surfaces.
  • Small, hard-edged textures: filtering and mipmaps are disabled so pixels remain visible.
  • Limited color depth: textures or the final image are posterized, often around 15 or 16 levels for a deliberately narrow tonal range.
  • Dithering: patterned transitions disguise harsh banding and imitate hardware-era color reduction.
  • Low internal resolution: rendering around a 240-pixel image height gives the final frame the block structure associated with the period.
  • Simple lighting and distance fog: short draw distance and restrained shading prevent modern physically based lighting from overwhelming the illusion.

These controls are interdependent. A very coarse mesh with perfectly perspective-correct textures will not read as an authentic PS1 scene. Conversely, aggressive snapping on a carefully subdivided mesh can make a character unreadable. Treat every setting as an artistic control, not an on/off authenticity test.

1. Block the scene with purposeful low-poly geometry

Start with silhouettes, not detail

Model the large shapes that define recognition at gameplay distance: head and torso masses, major limbs, vehicles, walls, props and terrain breaks. Remove edge loops that exist only to make a modern subdivision workflow easier. Keep enough faces for the silhouette to hold together when viewed from the camera you will actually use.

Do not interpret “low-poly” as “as few triangles as possible.” A PS1-style scene can use more polygons than a first attempt might suggest. Polygon placement matters more than a single count. Spend faces where a contour changes direction, where a joint bends, or where a texture needs a stable patch. A flat wall that carries a large sign may need additional divisions even though its silhouette is simple.

Use subdivision to control distortion

Affine mapping is intentionally unstable on large, oblique polygons. If one triangle covers a long floor section, its texture can stretch and slide dramatically as the camera moves. Add edge loops or split the polygon where the distortion becomes distracting. The extra geometry does not cancel the low-poly style; it gives you a way to choose where the wobble is visible and where it is controlled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Godot PSX Style Demo specifically recommends extra edge loops to smooth texture distortion and notes that period levels could use more polygons than expected. Mighty Duke describes the same trade-off in its shader documentation: “Affine Texture Mapping – If disabled, gets rid of the ‘weird floaty textures’ effect at oblique angles. PS1 developers counteracted this by subdividing geometry, so you should too.” Subdivide only the surfaces that need it, then leave secondary forms coarse.

Choose hard edges and shading deliberately

Keep broad planes visually broad. Excessive smoothing can turn a simple prop into a soft modern asset, while a completely faceted model can make every face compete for attention. Use flat or lightly controlled vertex normals where a hard break is part of the design, and reserve smoother transitions for forms that must remain legible.

Vertex colors are useful for broad color variation and lighting information. Plain-color low-poly models can use vertex colors instead of textures, which removes unnecessary UV and sampling complexity while retaining the graphic quality of the style.

2. Build small textures that cooperate with the mesh

Paint for the final pixel size

Create textures at a deliberately small size and paint readable shapes rather than fine noise. Simplify materials into a few blocks of color, then posterize the texture when a narrower tonal range is useful. The Godot PSX Style Demo README cites approximately 15 or 16 color-depth levels as a practical posterization target. This is a guide for the value range, not a requirement that every material use exactly the same number of shades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put the strongest contrast on the features that must survive a low-resolution frame: door outlines, eyes, road markings, signs and weapon silhouettes. Tiny gradients and high-frequency detail disappear or turn into flicker once the image is snapped and downsampled.

Combine texture maps with vertex colors

Use the texture for authored marks and the vertex color for broad tinting, local variation or a simple lighting cue. This combination avoids painting every large color shift into the bitmap and lets one small texture serve several parts with different tints.

Keep sampling intentionally harsh

For a PS1 treatment, disable texture filtering and mipmaps on the relevant textures so the texel grid remains visible. Filtering can make a small bitmap look like a smooth modern material, while mipmaps can introduce unexpected intermediate colors as the camera moves away. Verify the imported result in the running game, not only in the editor preview.

Godot documentation also recommends disabling VRAM compression for pixel-art textures used in 3D. Compression can alter the carefully chosen palette and introduce colors that were not present in the source image. Apply this setting to the textures that carry the pixel-art treatment, then inspect distant and oblique views for color changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Suggested texture and color setup

Element Recommended treatment Reason
Diffuse or albedo bitmap Small resolution, filtering disabled, mipmaps disabled Preserves visible texels and avoids smooth modern sampling.
Pixel-art texture in 3D VRAM compression disabled in the import settings Protects the authored palette from compression artifacts.
Broad material tint Vertex colors Adds variation without enlarging the texture or adding detail.
Texture tonal range Posterize around 15 or 16 levels when appropriate Creates a compact, period-inspired value structure.
Untextured prop Plain material plus vertex colors Keeps simple low-poly forms graphic and easy to control.

3. Configure the textures and scene in Godot

Import settings to check first

  1. Import the texture into the project and select it in the FileSystem dock.
  2. In the Import dock, turn off filtering for the PS1 treatment.
  3. Turn off mipmaps for textures that should retain their original pixel structure.
  4. Disable VRAM compression for pixel-art textures used in 3D.
  5. Reimport the texture, then inspect it on a surface viewed straight on and at a steep angle.
  6. Confirm the material and shader do not re-enable smoothing through a separate sampler or post-process.

Import behavior can vary with engine version and material setup, so treat the running scene as the authority. A texture that looks correct in a resource preview may still be filtered by a shader sampler or softened during an upscale pass.

Organize materials by purpose

Create separate materials for assets that need different amounts of jitter, affine distortion or palette reduction. A readable character, a distant building and a large floor plane rarely benefit from identical settings. Per-material controls let you preserve the style while reducing artifacts on gameplay-critical elements.

4. Add the PSX shader effects in the right order

A PSX shader or a dedicated Godot implementation should expose the major historical constraints as parameters. The Godot Asset Library entry named PS1 / PSX Visuals lists vertex snapping, vertex fog, affine texture warping, Gouraud shading, bit-depth limitation and color dithering. The open-source Godot PSX Style Demo lists vertex snapping, “wobbly” affine textures, limited color depth, hardware dithering, billboards and fog. You can use an implementation with those controls or build equivalent logic into a custom shader.

Vertex snapping

Snap transformed vertices in screen space rather than leaving all positions at modern floating-point precision. As the camera moves, the snapped positions produce the characteristic vertex jitter. Increase the snapping amount when you want a more unstable, visibly period-authentic image. Reduce it for faces that carry important facial features, text or narrow collision cues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply snapping after the model and camera transforms have established the projected position, then convert back as required by the shader pipeline. The exact code differs by engine and renderer; the visual test is whether the silhouette moves in small, discrete steps instead of remaining perfectly smooth.

Affine texture mapping

Enable affine mapping on surfaces where texture swimming is part of the look. At oblique angles, the texture will no longer remain perfectly locked to the perspective-correct surface. This is one of the strongest cues that separates a PS1-inspired treatment from an ordinary low-resolution render.

Use mesh subdivision to manage the result. If a floor marking becomes impossible to read, split the floor or add an edge loop before weakening the shader globally. Disable or reduce affine mapping only for assets where stable texture placement is more important than the effect.

Color-depth reduction

Limit color depth either while sampling the material or near the end of the shading process. Posterizing the material keeps each asset’s palette deliberate; reducing the final color depth makes the entire frame share a common limitation. Test both approaches. A global reduction can unify a scene, while per-material posterization gives you more control over characters and effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dithering

Dithering inserts a controlled pattern into transitions between reduced colors. It can prevent large flat bands from looking like accidental posterization and helps approximate hardware-era color blending. Keep the pattern aligned with the final pixel grid; if you apply it before a later resize or blur, it can turn into noise.

Hardware-style dithering is listed by the PSX Style Demo, while the PS1 / PSX Visuals entry exposes color dithering as a feature. Tune the pattern at gameplay distance. A dither that looks subtle in a large editor viewport may dominate a 240-pixel-tall frame.

Gouraud shading and vertex fog

Gouraud-style interpolation can provide the broad, low-frequency shading associated with early hardware. Vertex fog lets distant geometry fade into a controlled color instead of remaining sharply visible until it is clipped. Both effects should support the scene’s composition rather than become independent modern post-processing layers.

Billboards for selected details

Billboards can represent foliage, particles or distant signs with camera-facing cards. Use them where a flat card is a deliberate design choice, and keep their texture treatment consistent with the rest of the scene. A billboard with filtered, high-resolution art will undermine an otherwise convincing pipeline.

5. Choose an internal render resolution before polishing assets

Render the game internally at a deliberately small resolution, then upscale without smoothing. The Godot PSX Style Demo identifies 256×240, 320×240 and 512×240 as common PS1 reference resolutions. These are useful starting points for a 4:3-style image. Widescreen output can still work when the internal image keeps a similar height of roughly 240 pixels; the important constraint is the number of vertical pixels that define the final shapes.

Set the scale deliberately

  1. Choose one internal target, such as 320×240, for the first scene pass.
  2. Render the 3D view to that target rather than rendering full desktop resolution and shrinking only at the end.
  3. Upscale with nearest-neighbor behavior or an equivalent point-sampling path so pixels remain square and stable.
  4. Check the result at the intended gameplay window size and at a smaller preview size.
  5. Revisit mesh silhouettes and texture marks that disappear at the actual internal resolution.

Do not judge the effect only in the editor. A model that looks detailed and stable in a large viewport may collapse into flicker once the internal frame is reduced. Evaluate camera motion, turning, strafing and distance changes, not only a still image.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

6. Use lighting and fog to reinforce the era

Keep the lighting model simple enough that geometry, palette and precision remain visible. Modern physically based lighting, multiple glossy reflections and complex post-processing can make the scene feel contemporary even when the mesh is coarse. A small number of broad lights, vertex color variation and controlled ambient contribution usually communicate the intended form more clearly.

Use fog or a short draw distance to hide distant detail and establish the compressed visual space associated with early 3D games. Match the fog color to the scene palette, and make the transition gradual enough that it reads as atmosphere rather than a hard clipping plane. Vertex fog is especially useful when the shader already computes the low-precision vertex path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. A repeatable production sequence

  1. Block the camera and silhouettes. Decide the gameplay view first, then model the forms that remain recognizable from it.
  2. Mark distortion hotspots. Identify long floors, walls, ramps and signs that will show affine warping.
  3. Add only necessary edge loops. Subdivide those hotspots until texture motion is readable without making every asset dense.
  4. UV unwrap and paint small textures. Use broad shapes, restrained colors and posterization around 15 or 16 levels where it serves the material.
  5. Add vertex colors. Use them for large tints, simple lighting variation and untextured low-poly parts.
  6. Apply pixel-art import settings. Disable filtering and mipmaps, disable VRAM compression for relevant 3D pixel-art textures, and reimport.
  7. Enable the PSX shader. Start with vertex snapping, affine mapping, color reduction, dithering and fog enabled, then tune each asset.
  8. Set the internal resolution. Compare 256×240, 320×240 or 512×240-style targets according to the composition and desired coarseness.
  9. Upscale without smoothing. Inspect the final output, not just the low-resolution render target.
  10. Trim modern effects. Remove post-processing that competes with the geometry, palette, precision and resolution limits.

8. How to tune each effect without losing readability

When the image looks too clean

  • Confirm that vertex snapping is active in the material actually used by the mesh.
  • Check that affine mapping has not been disabled by a perspective-correct fallback.
  • Verify that filtering, mipmaps or texture compression have not been reintroduced at import or sampler level.
  • Lower the internal render resolution before adding decorative CRT effects.

When the image jitters too much

  • Reduce snapping on characters, weapons, UI-adjacent props and anything carrying text.
  • Add an edge loop where a large face is amplifying the motion.
  • Keep distant scenery more aggressive while giving gameplay-critical assets a gentler setting.

When textures swim into unreadable shapes

  • Split the affected polygon or add edge loops along the surface.
  • Reduce the amount of affine warping on that material instead of removing it everywhere.
  • Repaint the texture with larger, higher-contrast marks that survive the motion.

When colors band or turn noisy

  • Use a smaller, intentional palette before increasing dithering.
  • Apply dithering at the final pixel scale so the pattern does not become a fine modern noise layer.
  • Check whether texture compression introduced intermediate colors.

When the scene feels like a modern game with a pixel filter

  • Reduce lighting complexity and glossy responses.
  • Use vertex colors and broad planes instead of adding more texture detail.
  • Introduce distance fog and a shorter visible range.
  • Validate vertex precision and affine behavior; a post-process alone cannot reproduce those effects.

9. Choosing an implementation in Godot

There are two ready-made references in the Godot ecosystem and a custom-shader route. They differ in how much control you receive and how much integration work you must do.

Implementation Documented features License or compatibility information Best fit

Before shipping, read the current license text and verify compatibility with the exact Godot version and renderer used by your project. The documented feature lists establish the intended effects, but they do not guarantee identical defaults, performance or behavior across versions.

10. Validation before you call the style finished

Test motion, not just screenshots

Capture slow camera pans across walls, floors and ramps. Watch for texture swimming that turns signs into noise, snapping that breaks silhouettes, and dithering patterns that crawl independently of the image. Then test fast turns and distance changes, because temporal artifacts often appear only when several constraints interact.

Review at gameplay distance

Place the camera where the player will use it and inspect characters, props and environmental landmarks at that scale. A texture that looks elegantly posterized in a close-up may lose its identifying marks in the actual frame. Add edge loops or repaint only after observing the asset in context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check every material path

  • Confirm that all intended textures use the same filtering and mipmap policy.
  • Check that compressed and uncompressed versions do not produce different palette behavior.
  • Make sure transparent billboards and particles receive the same color-depth and dithering treatment when appropriate.
  • Verify that fog color, palette reduction and the upscale path do not create a separate modern-looking layer.

Practical checklist

  • Low-poly silhouettes are designed for the final camera.
  • Large affine-warp hotspots have targeted edge loops.
  • Textures are small, posterized where useful and painted for the final pixel size.
  • Filtering and mipmaps are disabled for the PS1 treatment.
  • VRAM compression is disabled for pixel-art textures used in 3D.
  • Vertex colors supply broad variation or replace unnecessary textures.
  • Vertex snapping is tuned per asset rather than applied blindly.
  • Affine mapping is visible but does not destroy important markings.
  • Color reduction and dithering are evaluated at the internal resolution.
  • Internal rendering uses a deliberately small target near a 240-pixel image height.
  • Upscaling preserves hard pixel edges.
  • Lighting remains simple, with fog or a short draw distance supporting the scene.
  • Modern post-processing is restrained.
  • Licenses and engine compatibility are verified for any imported implementation.
