Samsung phones let you create two different kinds of folders: app folders that group icons on the Home or Apps screen, and file folders in My Files that organize documents, photos, downloads, and other stored items. For an app folder, drag one app icon onto another. For a file folder, open a storage location in My Files and choose More options > Create folder.
Choose the folder type you need

These folders serve different purposes: an app folder groups shortcuts, while a My Files folder organizes stored items.
Create a folder for apps
- Go to the Home screen, or swipe up to open the Apps screen.
- Touch and hold an app icon, drag it on top of another app, and release. The folder starts with both app shortcuts.
- Open the folder, tap its name, enter a label such as “Work” or “Travel,” then tap Done on the keyboard.
- To add more apps, open the folder and tap Add (the plus sign), select the apps, and confirm. You can also drag additional app icons into the folder.
- To reposition the folder, touch and hold it and drag it where you want it. If you created it on the Apps screen, Samsung says you can use Add to Home to place it on the Home screen.
On Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Australia guide, an alternative is to touch and hold an app, choose Select, select the apps, and tap Create folder. That selection flow is model- and software-specific, so it may not be available on other Galaxy phones. Samsung Australia: Create an apps folder on Galaxy S26.
Create a folder for files in My Files
- Open My Files and select the place where you want the folder, commonly Internal storage.
- Tap More options (the three-dot icon), then tap Create folder.
- Enter a name and tap Create. The folder should appear in the storage location you selected.
- Find a file you want to organize, touch and hold it to select it, then choose Move or Copy.
- Choose the new folder and confirm the action. Depending on the screen, the confirmation may be labeled Move here or use Copy and Paste.
Samsung’s Australian My Files guide also describes adding an Internal storage folder to the Home screen: touch and hold the folder, choose More > Add to Home screen, then confirm. This creates a shortcut; it does not change the folder’s storage location. The option may not appear on every device or in every region. Samsung Australia: Use My Files.

If the folder option or gesture is missing
- Dragging apps does not create a folder: Try the select-and-create flow only if your device offers it, or consult the support page for your exact model. Samsung’s S26 instructions are not a universal menu path.
- Create folder is unavailable in My Files: Navigate into a writable storage location, such as Internal storage, and open More options there. Samsung’s general instructions use this path; available actions can differ by location.
- Your labels do not match these steps: Samsung UK cautions that “Menu names, paths, and screen layouts may vary depending on your device model, software or app version.” Samsung UK: Find and manage files on a Samsung Galaxy device.
Remove an app from a folder without uninstalling it
Removing an app icon from a folder or deleting the folder is not the same as uninstalling its apps. Samsung says deleting an app folder returns the apps to the Apps screen. If there is a Home screen folder and a separate Apps screen copy, they may need to be deleted separately. Samsung US: Manage apps and folders on your Galaxy phone.
