How to Create and Manage Profiles on HBO Max

You can create up to five HBO Max profiles on one account. Each profile keeps its own avatar, My List, Continue Watching row, settings, app language, ratings and recommendations. Use Adult profiles for general viewing, Kids profiles for age-based limits, a Parent Code to restrict leaving Kids mode, and a separate Profile PIN to lock an Adult profile.

Create a new HBO Max profile

The profile chooser is available on phones, tablets, computers and TVs. Menu wording can vary by device or country; look for Manage Profiles, Edit Profiles or an edit/pencil icon.

1. Open HBO Max and open the profile chooser.
2. Select + New Profile. Scroll if the option is not immediately visible.
3. Choose an avatar, or skip the avatar step.
4. Enter a profile name from 1 to 14 characters.
5. Choose whether the profile is an Adult or Kids profile. Follow the additional prompts for the selected type.
6. Select Save.

HBO Max allows a maximum of five profiles per account, not five separate subscriptions or independent accounts.

Adult profile details

HBO Max may ask for a birthdate and gender when you create an Adult profile. The first time you use it, you may also be offered preference choices for genres, brands, shows and movies so recommendations can be tailored.

Kids profile details

Enable Kids Mode and follow the prompts for a rating group and birthdate. Kids profiles use a child-focused Home screen and have their own My List and Continue Watching lists. The Philippines English help documentation gives PG (Ages 10+) as the default for a new Kids profile; rating names and defaults can differ in other markets.

Edit a profile and its preferences

Phone, tablet or computer

1. Open the profile menu.
2. Select Manage Profiles.
3. Choose the profile you want to change.
4. Update the available fields and select Save.

TV

From the profile chooser, select the edit or pencil icon beneath the profile. Apple TV can show an Edit option in the profile interface. Exact labels vary with the television platform and market.

Profile editing can include the avatar, name, language, ratings and other display or recommendation settings. HBO Max documents Adult-profile rating changes at HBOMax.com/editprofiles. If the birthdate is wrong, contact HBO Max support; the help documentation does not provide a self-service birthdate correction.

Set up Kids protections

Kids Mode limits the profile to the rating group selected for that child and presents a child-focused browsing experience. It does not create a separate account.

Enable Kid-Proof Exit

1. Open the profile management controls and select the Kids profile.
2. Turn on Kid-Proof Exit.
3. Create or enter the account’s four-digit Parent Code.

With Kid-Proof Exit enabled, the Parent Code is required to leave that Kids profile and switch to another profile. The same Parent Code applies to every Kids profile on the account where Kid-Proof Exit is turned on.

Rating labels and groups are market-specific. Do not assume that the default or available age bands shown in one country are identical in another.

Lock an Adult profile with a Profile PIN

1. Select an Adult profile (Kids Mode must be off).
2. Open profile management and choose Lock Profile.
3. Authenticate as requested and create a four-digit Profile PIN.
4. Save the change.

The Profile PIN controls entry to that Adult profile. It is separate from the Parent Code used by Kid-Proof Exit.

Change or reset the Profile PIN

1. Open the locked profile’s management controls.
2. Choose Reset Profile PIN.
3. Follow the account-password steps.
4. Check the account email for the PIN-change or reset message and complete the instructions.

The United States English support instructions describe an email to the account address. Your device or region may present slightly different prompts.

Switch between profiles

Open the profile chooser and select another profile. If you are leaving a Kids profile with Kid-Proof Exit enabled, enter the Parent Code. If the destination is a locked Adult profile, enter that profile’s Profile PIN.

On a TV, HBO Max may open to a Who’s Watching screen, depending on the last profile used. On a phone, tablet or computer, the app or website generally reopens the last-used profile.

Delete a profile safely

1. Switch to a different profile if the one you want to remove is currently active.
2. Open Manage Profiles on a phone, tablet or computer, or the edit control beneath a profile on a TV.
3. Select the eligible profile.
4. Choose Delete Profile and confirm.

Deleting a profile removes its associated information, including My List and Continue Watching. You cannot delete the profile that is active, and you cannot delete the first profile created for the account.

Which protection should you use?

• Choose a Kids profile when the viewer needs a child-focused interface and rating limits.
• Turn on Kid-Proof Exit when you need a code before a child can leave the Kids profile.
• Use an Adult Profile PIN when you want to restrict access to an Adult profile.
• Use both systems when children need a protected Kids area and adults also want their own viewing space locked.
