To create a podcast on YouTube, make a public podcast in YouTube Studio—or designate an existing playlist as one—then add full-length episode videos in the right listening order. An audio file such as an MP3 alone cannot be a YouTube podcast episode: episodes in the podcast playlist are videos. Growth is not guaranteed by setup or metadata, but a focused playlist, clear show information, eligible content, and regular review of your own analytics give listeners and YouTube a clearer way to understand the show.
How YouTube podcasts work
YouTube defines a podcast show as a playlist, with podcast episodes as videos in that playlist. A podcast is therefore not simply an audio feed copied onto YouTube: each episode needs video. You can upload video episodes directly, use an RSS feed, or check whether your podcast hosting platform supports distribution to YouTube. Details and available distribution routes are described in YouTube’s podcast distribution guidance.
An audio-only recording can still be the source for an episode, but it must be turned into a video before it can be added as a YouTube episode. The platform’s guidance does not require a particular camera, microphone, or video style. Choose a format you can produce consistently and that accurately represents the show.
Create the podcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and create or designate a podcast. Start a new podcast or select an existing playlist and designate it as a podcast. Enter the show title, description, visibility, and thumbnail in the podcast details.
- Use the show’s real name. Choose the actual, descriptive show name rather than a generic label or a string of extra keywords. YouTube cautions against adding words such as “podcast” unless they are part of the show’s name.
- Write a detailed description. Explain the subject, format, and intended audience in language that helps a prospective listener decide whether the show is for them. YouTube’s podcast discovery tips specifically recommend a detailed description.
- Add a square podcast thumbnail. YouTube recommends 1280 x 1280 pixels and requires a square thumbnail when editing podcast details. Treat that as a platform dimension recommendation, not evidence that a particular design will improve reach.
- Add the full-length episode videos. Upload videos in Studio, distribute through an RSS feed, or use a hosting platform that supports YouTube distribution. Confirm the current options and steps in Studio, since interface labels and availability can change.
Organize episodes in the right order
Keep one public podcast playlist for each show. Include full-length episodes from every season, in the order listeners should consume them. Do not mix clips, unrelated uploads, other shows, or videos from other channels into the main podcast playlist; organize supporting clips separately, without designating their playlist as a podcast.

| Show format | Recommended playlist order |
|---|---|
| Episodic show, where episodes can generally be heard independently | Newest to oldest |
| Serial show, where episodes build on earlier installments | Oldest to newest |
These ordering recommendations follow YouTube’s podcast setup guidance. For a show that mixes formats, choose the order that best supports listening rather than forcing a season or numbering convention that makes the next episode harder to find.
Choose a video format for an audio-first show
YouTube’s podcast rules require video episodes, but they do not prescribe how visually elaborate those videos must be. An audio recording paired with a designed visual, a recording of the hosts, or another suitable video presentation can serve as the episode video. Keep the presentation truthful to the episode, and make sure the complete episode—not just a teaser—is in the podcast playlist.

- Use a separate playlist for trailers, highlights, and short clips so the main podcast playlist remains a clear sequence of full episodes.
- Shorts made to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music. They may support discovery elsewhere on YouTube, but should not be treated as podcast episodes in the main playlist.
- If you want episodes to be available for audio-only playback, review the podcast and video settings. YouTube says disabling audio-only playback requires removing the video from all podcasts in that video’s settings.
Help listeners discover the show
Make the podcast public, keep the episode playlist complete and in consumption order, use the same show name consistently, and provide an informative description. These practices make the show easier to understand and navigate; they are not a promise of audience growth.
Eligible podcasts may be included in YouTube Music and may receive podcast badges, a spotlight on youtube.com/podcasts, Watch-page discovery, recommendations to people with similar interests, and improved search features. Eligibility and placement are conditional, not guaranteed. YouTube says its podcast discovery page uses social signals, machine learning, signals from other Google products and services, and human input; no single metadata choice guarantees a recommendation.

Keep copyright and ownership in mind. YouTube identifies content not owned by the creator and copyright-policy violations as factors that can make playlists ineligible for podcast features. Use material you have rights to use, and review YouTube’s current policies before including music, excerpts, or other third-party material.
Measure performance and decide what to change
In YouTube Studio, use the podcast analytics views to examine performance and how viewers find and watch the show. Depending on the view and what is available for your channel, metrics may include views, watch time, traffic sources, audience demographics, audience retention, revenue, impressions, and click-through rate. Labels and availability can change, so check the current Studio interface and YouTube’s podcast analytics guidance and distribution guidance.

Common setup problems
- An MP3 will not add as a podcast episode: create a video version of the audio, then upload or distribute that video as an episode.
- The podcast details will not save: check that the thumbnail is square and meets YouTube’s recommended 1280 x 1280 pixel dimensions, and complete the required podcast fields.
- The show or episodes are not appearing in podcast surfaces: confirm the podcast is public, the playlist contains eligible content you own, and it does not violate copyright policy. Features are conditional, so eligibility does not guarantee a particular placement.
- Shorts are missing from YouTube Music: this is expected; Shorts made to support podcasts do not appear there. Keep full episodes in the podcast playlist and use a separate clips playlist.
- Episodes play in an unexpected order: set episodic shows newest to oldest and serial shows oldest to newest, then verify the playlist as a listener would see it.
