You can design a convincing Overwatch fan skin without generative AI, tracing, or borrowing another artist’s finished image. Start with a short written brief, turn your own observations and permitted references into 8–12 silhouette thumbnails, develop one concept in a layered file, and present it as a readable character sheet. Label the result as fan art and check Blizzard’s current legal and Fan Art Program terms before distributing it commercially or submitting it to Blizzard.
What makes a skin concept original?
An original concept adds your own visual decisions rather than reproducing an existing illustration. You choose the theme, shapes, construction, materials, colors, props and effects, then document how those choices developed. The finished image can depict an Overwatch hero, but the drawing, layout, costume design and explanatory text should be yours.
- Use observations, not another artist’s finished picture. You may study a hero’s role, silhouette, equipment and color relationships, then write those observations in your own words.
- Use references you are allowed to use. Your own photographs, life drawing and properly licensed or public-domain references are suitable starting points. Keep the license information with your project.
- Do not trace or paint over. Tracing, paint-overs, collages and image-to-image transformations preserve another creator’s composition or marks even when the result is recolored.
- Separate ownership. Your drawing and new costume ideas are your contribution. Blizzard owns the Overwatch name, characters, stories, artwork, designs, logos and related elements.
Process evidence helps demonstrate authorship. Save dated thumbnail pages, written notes and layered working files instead of keeping only a flattened export.

A one-page brief prevents a concept from becoming a collection of unrelated details. Pick one hero and one theme, then define the problem the skin is solving. For example, “Give a support hero a weather-observation theme while keeping the healing equipment instantly identifiable” is more useful than “make a cool blue skin.”

Choose the hero and theme
Record the hero’s name for internal planning, then describe the theme in a few concrete nouns and verbs: alpine rescue, brass instrumentation, coastal festival, orbital maintenance or another idea you can express through shape and material. Avoid starting with a popular skin image; start with the setting, story hook or design problem.
Set three non-negotiable constraints

Add practical limits
Decide the approximate number of materials, a limited color count and the parts that receive the most detail. A useful brief might allow two primary colors, one accent, one metal finish and one repeating motif. Limits make later comparisons possible and stop small details from overwhelming the silhouette.
Research the hero without collecting art to copy
Use official hero descriptions and your own observation of the game to understand broad traits: body proportions, combat role, signature equipment, movement, material relationships and the areas players rely on for recognition. Write notes such as “large rectangular support device sits high on the back” rather than saving screenshots as drawing templates.

- Photograph objects, clothing, architecture or textures yourself. Keep the original photographs and dates.
- Draw from life when possible. Quick studies of buckles, boots, tools and fabric folds teach construction better than copying a finished character illustration.
- Use public-domain or properly licensed references, and record the license, creator and source in a text file.
- Use references for material behavior and real-world construction. Do not assemble several artists’ compositions into a new collage.
Do not feed another artist’s image into an image generator, use an image-to-image filter, or paint over it. Those methods make it difficult to identify your independent decisions and can violate the source artist’s rights.

Keep an authorship trail
Save the brief, observation notes, reference log and each thumbnail page with dates. In a layered document, name groups such as “silhouette,” “costume construction,” “palette,” “props” and “effects.” A versioned file gives you a recoverable history if you later revise the concept or need to explain how it was made.
Generate many thumbnails before committing
Make 8–12 small black-and-white silhouettes. Work quickly and vary the large shapes rather than polishing the first idea. Change the proportion of headwear, shoulder mass, coat length, armor placement, backpack shape and held props. At this stage, a solid black figure is more informative than line-art detail.
Test each silhouette at a distance
- Reduce each thumbnail until it is roughly the size at which a player might see a teammate across a fight.
- Cover the weapon and inspect the body alone. Ask whether the hero’s posture and signature proportions still read.
- Cover the body and inspect the major prop or weapon. Confirm that the equipment has a clear, new shape without becoming unrecognizable.
- Place the thumbnails side by side and remove options that rely on tiny decorations, obscure the face or hands, or look interchangeable with another hero.
Choose the design that communicates the hero and theme with the fewest explanatory words. Keep the rejected thumbnails; they show exploration and may contain useful shapes for later concepts.
Develop the selected concept
Establish the construction
Draw a clean three-quarter view first, then add front and side views when the costume needs explanation. Block the body in simple volumes before adding seams, plates or accessories. Decide how each garment is worn, fastened and allowed to move. A rescue jacket should have believable closures and storage; an armored shell needs joints and clearance around the weapon.

Design materials deliberately
Assign a small set of materials and describe their behavior: matte woven fabric, brushed metal, translucent polymer, rubberized grip or weathered leather. Show where each material bends, reflects light, collects wear or protects the body. Material contrast is often more legible than extra ornament.
Build a limited palette
Start with a dominant color, a secondary color and one accent. Reserve the accent for areas that need emphasis, such as the face, weapon controls or an ability device. Check the drawing in grayscale to make sure value contrast—not hue alone—separates the important forms. If team-color readability is relevant, leave a clear, consistent area for it.
Explain weapons and effects
Show how the existing weapon would be reskinned without changing the gameplay function. Add small callouts for moving parts, ammunition indicators or energy channels. For VFX, describe color, shape, opacity and motion rather than covering the character in glow. Effects should remain distinguishable during combat and should not hide hit areas, hands or the face.

Score each candidate consistently, or write a short note under every criterion. A visually dramatic concept that fails readability is not finished; revise its largest shapes before polishing details.

Assemble a professional presentation sheet
A presentation sheet lets a viewer evaluate the idea quickly and see how it would function as a game skin. Use a clear title such as “Hero — Theme,” followed by a one-paragraph pitch explaining the setting, story hook and visual approach.
Include the essential views
- A large three-quarter or front view as the focal image.
- Front and side views, or a turnaround, when the back, footwear or equipment needs clarification.
- Callouts for costume construction, material changes, props and weapon treatment.
- A small strip of palette swatches with names or material notes.
- Optional VFX panels showing the proposed color and shape of important effects.
Keep the page hierarchy simple: title and pitch first, main view second, details third. Use arrows and short labels instead of paragraphs over the artwork. Leave enough margin that labels remain readable when the sheet is shared on a smaller screen.
Export and archive correctly
Export a high-resolution PNG or JPG for viewing and retain the editable source file with its layers. Use a descriptive filename and a version number. Before exporting, hide construction guides, check that no unlicensed reference image is embedded, inspect the sheet at 100 percent, and verify that small text and color swatches are legible.
Materials and file checklist
You can complete the workflow traditionally, digitally or with a combination of both. Choose tools that let you preserve iterations rather than tools that encourage copying.

- Sketchbook or plain paper for briefs and thumbnail pages.
- Graphite, fineliners or markers for fast silhouette and value studies.
- Scanner or phone camera for digitizing physical pages.
- Drawing tablet and layered art application, if you work digitally.
- Reference log containing creator, license and source for every external reference.
- Separate folders for dated thumbnails, development files, exports and the final source file.
A simple folder structure—01_brief, 02_thumbnails, 03_development, 04_sheet and 05_exports—makes the process easy to audit and recover.
Label and share the work responsibly
Make the fan-art status obvious
Put “fan art” in the sheet footer, post caption or accompanying description. State which elements are your original contribution and avoid language that suggests Blizzard commissioned, approved or endorsed the concept. Do not place Blizzard logos on your sheet as if it were an official product page.
Understand personal-use limits
Blizzard’s Legal FAQ says downloaded Blizzard material is for “home, noncommercial and personal use only.” It also says that using game music, sound samples or characters in original compositions is limited to “personal use and creative exploration.” Those limits matter if your presentation includes screenshots, extracted assets, game audio or other downloaded material; your own drawing does not automatically grant permission to reuse those materials commercially.
Blizzard’s trademark guidance identifies Overwatch as a Blizzard trademark and generally limits Blizzard Marks to activities covered by an applicable user-generated-content policy and to non-commercial use. Check the current guidance before putting the mark in a portfolio, selling prints, accepting commissions or running advertising around the image.
Consider a formal Blizzard submission
Blizzard’s Fan Art Submission terms define Blizzard Property broadly, including titles, characters, names, stories, artwork, designs and related elements. The terms provide a limited license to make drawings, illustrations or graphic representations based on that property for the Fan Art Program. They also grant Blizzard a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual license to use submitted licensed materials for business purposes. Read the agreement in full before submitting anything you may want to license exclusively or sell.
Official Overwatch community guidance says creators may physically mail creations or send a digital design by email. A later community post lists playoverwatch@blizzard.com as the fan-art route. Treat that as a submission channel, not as evidence that a concept will become an in-game skin; no authoritative acceptance or conversion rate is published.
Commercial use requires extra care
Do not assume that a fan-art label makes merchandise, paid downloads, sponsored posts or client work permissible. Remove downloaded Blizzard assets, game audio and screenshots unless the applicable policy expressly allows the use. If you plan to sell or license the concept, obtain professional legal advice and review the latest Blizzard terms for your region and activity.

Final pre-publish checklist
- One hero and one clearly stated theme drive the design.
- Eight to twelve thumbnails show that the silhouette was explored rather than copied.
- The hero remains identifiable in a small black-and-white view.
- Materials, palette, props, weapon treatment and VFX have concise callouts.
- All external references are your own, public-domain or properly licensed, with records retained.
- The presentation is marked “fan art” and does not imply Blizzard endorsement.
- No traced, painted-over, collaged or image-to-image source artwork is present.
- A high-resolution PNG or JPG is exported, and the layered source file is archived.
- You have reviewed the current Legal FAQ, trademark guidance and Fan Art Program terms for the way you intend to share the work.
There is no authoritative statistic showing how often fan skin concepts are accepted, produced or converted into playable Overwatch skins. Treat a submission as a way to share an idea, not as a promise of publication or implementation.
