What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows Task Scheduler can launch a program, script, or batch file at a set time, when Windows starts, when a user signs in, after the computer has been idle, or when a matching event appears in the event log. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include both a graphical wizard and the schtasks command-line tool.
Use Create Basic Task for a straightforward schedule. Use Create Task when you need settings such as a specific run-as account, elevated privileges, conditions, repetition, or an interactive-only task.
Before creating the task
Have these details ready:
- The full path to the executable, PowerShell script, or batch file.
- The required arguments, if the program needs them.
- The account that should run the task.
- Whether the task must access network locations or display a graphical window.
- The trigger: a time, startup, sign-in, idle period, or event.
Use a full path rather than relying on the current folder. For example, use C:ToolsBackup.exe instead of just Backup.exe. If the application uses relative paths, also specify its working directory in Start in.
Open Task Scheduler
- Open Start, type Task Scheduler, and open the desktop app.
- Alternatively, press Win+R, enter
taskschd.msc, and select OK.
In the left pane, select Task Scheduler Library. You can create the task there, or select an existing subfolder first if you want the task organized elsewhere. The right-hand Actions pane contains Create Basic Task… and Create Task….

Method 1: Create a basic scheduled task
The basic wizard is suitable for a program that needs one normal trigger and one action.
1. Give the task a name
- Select Create Basic Task… in the Actions pane.
- Enter a descriptive name, such as
Daily BackuporStart Reporting Tool. - Optionally enter a description explaining what the task does.
- Select Next.
Use a name that identifies both the action and its purpose. This makes the task easier to find when you test it from the command line or troubleshoot it later.
2. Choose the trigger
Select when Windows should start the task. The wizard provides options such as:
| Trigger | Use it when… |
|---|---|
| Daily | The task should run every day at a particular time. |
| Weekly | The task should run on selected days of the week. |
| Monthly | The task should run on a monthly schedule. |
| One time | The task should run once at a specified date and time. |
| When the computer starts | The task should start during Windows startup. |
| When I log on | The task should start when the selected user signs in. |
Select Next, then fill in the date, time, recurrence, weekday, or account details requested by the wizard. For a task that must run every few minutes, run repeatedly during a time window, or respond to an event, use Create Task… or the schtasks method below.
3. Choose the action
- Select Start a program.
- Select Next.
- In Program/script, enter the executable path. For example:
C:ToolsUtility.exe. - Enter command-line switches in Add arguments (optional), if required.
- Enter the program’s working directory in Start in (optional) when it depends on relative file paths.
- Select Next.
For example, a program could be configured as follows:
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Program/script | C:ToolsReport.exe |
| Add arguments | --export daily |
| Start in | C:Tools |
If you are launching a script, point the action to the interpreter when appropriate. For example, use C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0powershell.exe as the program and put the script path and switches in the arguments field. This avoids depending on file associations.

- Long-Range: Reliable, long-range Bluetooth wireless mouse works up to 10m/33 feet away from your computer (3)
4. Finish and test the task
- Review the summary.
- Select Finish.
- In the left pane, select Task Scheduler Library.
- Select the new task in the middle pane.
- Select Run in the Actions pane.
Running the task manually ignores its schedule, but it uses the saved program, account, and password. This is the quickest way to find a bad path or permissions problem before waiting for the scheduled trigger.
Method 2: Create an advanced task
Select Create Task… instead of the basic wizard when the task needs more control. The full dialog separates the configuration into identity, triggers, actions, conditions, and settings.
General tab
- Set the task name and description.
- Choose the account under which it runs.
- Choose whether it runs only when that user is logged on or whether it may run while the user is logged off.
- Select Run with highest privileges when the program genuinely requires elevation.
- Choose the appropriate Windows configuration if the task has an operating-system compatibility requirement.
The account is important. A task running as SYSTEM can access local machine resources but does not have interactive logon rights. A graphical application launched as SYSTEM may run in a non-visible session, so the signed-in user cannot see or operate its window.
Triggers tab
Select New… to add a trigger. Depending on the selected trigger type, you can configure a schedule, startup, sign-in, idle condition, or event-based start. You can add more than one trigger to the same task.
Use a trigger for when a specific user logs on if the task must belong to that sign-in event. Use any user when every user sign-in should start it.
Actions tab
Select New… and choose Start a program. Fill in:
- Program/script: the executable or interpreter.
- Add arguments: switches, file names, or script arguments.
- Start in: the working folder, without quotation marks around the folder path.
You can add multiple actions. Windows runs them in their listed order.

Conditions tab
Conditions can prevent an otherwise-ready task from starting. Review options related to idle time, power, and network availability. For example, a task restricted to AC power will not start while the computer is running on battery. Conditions are a common reason a task appears correctly configured but does not run at the expected time.
Settings tab
Settings control behavior such as whether the task can be run manually, what happens if a scheduled start is missed, how long a running task may continue, and how Windows handles overlapping instances. Configure these when a program may hang, when the computer is often asleep at the scheduled time, or when a task must not run twice simultaneously.
Create a task with schtasks
Open Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, or another elevated command shell when administrator permissions are required. The basic syntax is:
schtasks /create /sc <scheduletype> /tn <taskname> /tr <taskrun> [options]
The most useful schedule types are:
/sc value |
Meaning |
|---|---|
MINUTE |
Repeat at a minute interval. |
HOURLY |
Repeat at an hourly interval. |
DAILY |
Run every day or every specified number of days. |
WEEKLY |
Run weekly on selected weekdays. |
MONTHLY |
Run monthly. |
ONCE |
Run once at a specified time. |
ONSTART |
Run when Windows starts. |
ONLOGON |
Run whenever a user logs on. |
ONIDLE |
Run after the computer has been idle for a specified period. |
ONEVENT |
Run when an event matches an event query. |
Useful command examples
Run an executable every day at 9:00 AM:
schtasks /create /sc daily /tn "Daily Utility" /tr C:ToolsUtility.exe /st 09:00
Run it every four days:
schtasks /create /sc daily /mo 4 /tn "Every Four Days" /tr C:ToolsUtility.exe
Run a program whenever any user logs on:
schtasks /create /sc onlogon /tn "Logon Utility" /tr C:ToolsUtility.exe
Run it after 10 minutes of inactivity:
schtasks /create /sc onidle /i 10 /tn "Idle Utility" /tr C:ToolsUtility.exe
Run an executable every day at 4:00 AM as the local SYSTEM account:
schtasks /create /sc daily /st 04:00 /tn "System Utility" /tr C:ToolsUtility.exe /ru System
Run a batch file at every logon as SYSTEM:
schtasks /create /sc onlogon /tn "Start Batch" /tr C:MyApps.bat /ru SYSTEM
Run a created task immediately:
schtasks /run /tn "Daily Utility"
The /run command is separate from /create; it starts the saved task immediately and does not wait for its schedule.
Important schtasks options
| Option | Purpose |
|---|---|
/tn |
Task name. It may include a folder path, such as MaintenanceDaily Utility, and cannot exceed 238 characters. |
/tr |
Program, script, or batch-file command. The documented path limit is 262 characters. |
/st HH:mm |
24-hour start time, such as 14:30. It is required with /sc once. |
/mo |
Schedule modifier, such as every four days with /mo 4. |
/d |
Weekdays such as MON or monthly day numbers from 1 through 31. |
/ru |
Account used to run the task. This is different from /u. |
/rp |
Password for the normal user specified with /ru. Do not use it for SYSTEM. |
/it |
Interactive-only: the task runs only while the specified user is logged on. |
/np |
Does not store a password. The task cannot run interactively as that user and can access only local resources. |
/rl HIGHEST |
Runs with the highest available privileges. The default is LIMITED. |
/f |
Overwrites an existing task with the same name without a replacement warning. |
/z |
Deletes the task after its final run. |
For remote administration, /s identifies the computer and /u and /p provide credentials for administering that computer. They do not select the account that executes the task; use /ru for that.

Verify, troubleshoot, and remove a task
Creating a task does not prove that it works. Windows can register a task even when its executable path is wrong or the saved account password is invalid.
Use these commands:
schtasks /query
Show one task with detailed information:
schtasks /query /tn "Daily Utility" /v
Display its XML definition:
schtasks /query /tn "Daily Utility" /xml
Start it immediately:
schtasks /run /tn "Daily Utility"
Stop a task that is currently running:
schtasks /end /tn "Daily Utility"
Delete it, with confirmation:
schtasks /delete /tn "Daily Utility"
Delete it without confirmation:
schtasks /delete /tn "Daily Utility" /f
Common failure causes
- Wrong executable path: confirm that the file exists and that the task account can open it.
- Missing working directory: programs using relative paths may fail unless Start in is set.
- Account password changed: update the task’s stored credentials after a password change or expiry.
- Insufficient privileges: use Run with highest privileges or
/rl HIGHESTonly when necessary. - Network access: the run-as account must have permission to the share. A task created with
/nphas access only to local resources. - Invisible application: a GUI program running as SYSTEM may be running in a non-visible session.
- Interactive-only configuration: a task marked interactive-only will not run while its account is logged off.
- Conditions blocking execution: check battery, idle, network, and missed-start settings in the full task dialog.
Task Scheduler permissions and account choices
To schedule, view, or change all local tasks, the caller must be a member of the local Administrators group. Remote administration requires administrator membership on the remote computer or administrator credentials supplied for that computer.

A task may work when launched from your desktop but fail under Task Scheduler because it runs as a different account with a different profile and permissions.
For desktop applications that must be visible to the signed-in user, use an appropriate interactive user account and avoid configuring the task as SYSTEM. For background maintenance that needs no visible window, SYSTEM may be suitable, provided the program supports that execution context.
FAQ
Can I run a scheduled task immediately after creating it?
Yes. Select the task in Task Scheduler and select Run, or execute schtasks /run /tn "Task Name". This tests the saved task configuration without waiting for its trigger.
What is the difference between /u and /ru in schtasks?
/u supplies credentials for administering a remote computer and is used with /s. /ru specifies the account under which the task itself runs.

Why did the task register successfully but fail later?
Task registration does not validate the executable’s location or the saved user’s password. Check the path, working directory, account permissions, password, and task history or run the task manually.
Can a task running as SYSTEM show a program on my desktop?
Do not rely on that behavior. SYSTEM has no interactive logon rights, so a GUI application launched under SYSTEM may run in a non-visible session.
How do I make a task run every few minutes?
Use the full dialog’s repetition settings or the command line. The MINUTE schedule type supports a minute modifier, for example /sc minute /mo 15. The /ri repetition interval is not valid with MINUTE.
How do I run a task only when a user is signed in?
In the full dialog, configure it as interactive-only. From the command line, use /it. An interactive-only task does not run while that account is logged off.
