To loop multiple local videos on YouTube Live from Windows, install VLC with the same architecture as OBS, add OBS’s VLC Video source to a scene, add your files to its playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. Then connect OBS to YouTube with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, check the preview, and click Go live.
Before you start: check channel access and install VLC
- Confirm live-stream eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube states that users must be at least 16 to live stream. Check access well before your planned start time. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source relies on VLC libraries and is available when VLC is installed. Match the VLC and OBS architectures; OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. OBS documents Windows support for this source. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Prepare your media and rights. Have the video or audio files accessible on the Windows computer and check that you have the rights and permissions needed to broadcast every playlist item. The technical setup does not grant permission to use third-party music, films, or other material.
Create the VLC playlist in OBS
- Open OBS and select the scene that should show the looping content.
- In the Sources dock, select +, choose VLC Video, and create the source.
- In the source properties, add the local media files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS enables it by default; when the source reaches the end of its media list, it starts again. Shuffle is off by default, so files play in list order unless you change that setting. OBS documents the VLC source and playlist settings
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that both video and audio behave as expected. The OBS documentation says the source defaults to stopping when it is not visible and restarting when visible. If you switch to a scene that hides it, playback may stop and restart when you return. For uninterrupted playback across scene changes, plan your scene layout around that behavior and test it.
OBS describes VLC Video as an alternative to Media Source for extended media support; it allows a playlist, whereas Media Source is for a single local file with its own loop option. OBS lists common formats for Media Sources, but does not provide a separate exhaustive VLC Video format list in that documentation. Check the files in your installed VLC/OBS setup rather than assuming every format will work. OBS Media Sources documentation
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or select one you have scheduled. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports starting immediately or scheduling ahead. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if offered, and enter the server URL and key as required by the selected connection method. Use the exact values YouTube displays for that stream.
- Treat the stream key like a password: it identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. If it is exposed, use the reset control in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement key. YouTube encoder setup
Test the loop, preview, and bandwidth before going live
- Play through the playlist in OBS and verify picture, audio levels, order, and the transition from the final item back to the first. If your broadcast uses scene changes, test those too.
- Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the picture and audio there before clicking Go live. YouTube recommends testing in advance and checking stream accessibility. YouTube streaming tips
- Make sure your available upload bandwidth exceeds the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends about 20% headroom above that bitrate; for example, a 6 Mbps stream calls for roughly 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation. Keep other network use in mind, since it can reduce capacity available to OBS. YouTube streaming tips
- When finished, end the broadcast in YouTube and stop the OBS encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube encoder guidance
Use standard encoder streaming unless you need HLS
A playlist looping in OBS does not by itself require HLS. The normal encoder setup uses YouTube’s server URL and stream key. YouTube documents HLS for compatible use cases such as HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, and notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments instead of a continuous RTMP stream. Follow the standard encoder workflow unless you have a specific HLS requirement. YouTube HLS setup
If you do select HLS, YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges or encryption beyond HTTPS. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. These are HLS transport requirements, not settings needed to make an OBS playlist repeat. YouTube HLS setup

Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from the OBS source menu | VLC is not installed, or OBS cannot use the installed VLC libraries. | Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS and check the source menu again. OBS Media Sources documentation |
| The playlist stops after the last item | Loop Playlist may be disabled or the source may not be reaching its expected end. | Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist; test the end-to-start transition. The documented default is on. OBS Media Sources documentation |
| Playback stops after changing scenes | The VLC source is hidden when its scene is no longer visible; the documented default is to stop while hidden and restart when visible. | Test the scene workflow and keep the source visible where needed. Do not assume hidden playback continues. OBS Media Sources documentation |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | The encoder may not be connected with the correct stream URL/key, or the channel may not yet be eligible for live streaming. | Verify the URL and key against the selected Live Control Room stream, check channel eligibility, and look for encoder status in the control room. Reset a compromised key. Eligibility · Encoder setup |
| Preview is unstable or drops frames | Available upload bandwidth may be insufficient or congested. | Compare the stream bitrate with available upload capacity, allow YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test while the network is under representative use. YouTube streaming tips |
| A media item will not play | The file may not be supported by the installed VLC/OBS combination or may be inaccessible at its saved location. | Confirm the file path and test the item locally and in the OBS source. OBS does not enumerate a separate exhaustive VLC Video format list in its cited documentation, so verify compatibility on your setup. OBS Media Sources documentation |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want an uploaded playlist to stay live without leaving a Windows computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The setup is: upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and supports video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot.
The first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start a free day.
