To create a vacation rental website, first decide whether it will simply showcase your property or handle guest reservations and payments. A brochure site can link to an existing listing; a direct-booking site also needs a reliable availability source, a defined booking and payment flow, and a way to manage reservations without conflicts.
Choose what your website needs to do
There are two different projects behind the phrase “vacation rental website.” A brochure site presents the property and sends guests to another booking service. A direct-booking site lets guests check dates and submit a request or complete a reservation on your own website. The second option requires more setup and ongoing attention because availability, prices, fees, payment, and guest communications must work together.
Decide which guest action you want before choosing software: an inquiry, a request you approve, or an instant confirmed booking. Label that action clearly so guests know whether they have a reservation or have only contacted you.
Pick an implementation route
Use a general website builder
A general builder can give you design flexibility and a template suited to a rental. You then select and connect the booking, calendar, and payment tools you need. This route suits owners who are comfortable assembling separate services and checking that they work together. Use a vacation-rental website platform
A specialist platform may combine property pages with a booking engine, payment workflow, and calendar or channel management. For example, Guesty describes its websites as connected to its booking engine and channel manager, and Futurestay describes Stripe payments and channel calendar syncing. Those descriptions explain the vendors’ offerings, not a guarantee that a particular setup fits your channels or operating needs. Add a booking widget to an existing site
If you already have a website, an embeddable calendar or booking form may add availability and reservation functions without replacing your pages. RentalBeam describes an embeddable calendar, inquiry-only and approval-before-payment flows, optional card payment in the widget, and iCal feed synchronization. It identifies its service as a lightweight booking engine rather than a full property-management system. Compare the options against your operation

| Guest access | Check responsive behavior, language and currency needs, keyboard and screen-reader usability, and accurate alternative text for images. |
Do not assume that a calendar connection prevents every double booking. Ask which sources are synchronized, whether connections are API-based or feed-based, and what happens if an update is delayed or fails. For payment, verify current fees and regional support with the provider rather than relying on a general claim that a platform accepts cards.
Prepare the property information guests need
Gather accurate details before building pages. Include location, sleeping capacity, amenities, house rules, accessibility features you can substantiate, rates, fees, minimum stays, check-in information, and cancellation terms. Use original, representative photographs and factual descriptions; avoid images or wording that imply features the property does not have.

For a single property, make its details and booking action easy to find. If you offer several, create a clear way to compare them and reach each property’s page. Provide a contact or help route so guests can ask about details they cannot confirm from the site.
Build and test the reservation path
- Set up the pages: Create property pages and clear sections for amenities, location, policies, and contact information. State rates, fees, and applicable stay conditions where guests can find them before they commit.
- Connect the availability source: Link the calendar or booking system to the channels you actually use. Confirm how updates flow and check that blocked dates and new reservations appear where expected.
- Configure the guest action: Decide whether a guest is sending an inquiry, requesting approval, or confirming a booking. Set up payment only for the flow you intend to offer, and verify processor fees, supported regions, account responsibilities, and refund handling.
- Run a complete test: Walk through date selection, availability, the full price including taxes and fees, request or confirmation, payment, receipt, and guest follow-up. Correct missing information, broken links, unclear status messages, and any mismatch between the displayed price and checkout total.
- Connect your domain and review mobile pages: Use a custom domain if appropriate, then inspect the site on a phone as well as desktop. Check photos, forms, prices, links, and booking steps on a small screen. Wix also recommends reviewing the mobile layout before launch (Wix guidance).
- Verify before publishing: Test links and booking settings again, confirm that the availability source is current, and make the distinction between an inquiry and a confirmed reservation unmistakable.
Plan for launch and ongoing upkeep
A website does not automatically bring visitors or guarantee reservations. Make property pages easy to understand and find, then choose how you will reach potential guests, such as descriptive search-friendly pages, guest follow-up, email, or social promotion. Monitor inquiries and failed booking attempts after launch; update property facts, rates, fees, and policies when they change.

Check the rules that apply to your location and business setup. Short-term-rental licensing, taxes, privacy, consumer protection, and accessibility obligations vary by jurisdiction and property type, so the website tools alone cannot establish what applies to you.
