A continuous broadcast is not guaranteed to produce one complete YouTube archive: streams over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An encoder running on a computer or another supported setup, with the static image and radio audio available as sources. This guide describes the setup at a high level; exact controls vary by encoder.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
- Permission to use both the audio and artwork. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
For a local encoder option, OBS provides an official Help Portal. The precise menu sequence for combining a still image with a continuous audio source depends on the current OBS version and source type.
Set up the still image and radio audio in your encoder
- Create a scene or equivalent layout. Add the still image as the video source and size or crop it to fill the intended canvas. A single image can remain on screen while the audio continues.
- Add the radio audio source. Choose the source that carries your feed, such as an audio input or media source, and confirm that the encoder’s audio meter responds. If you are using a playlist or a feed that must run continuously, verify its looping or continuation behavior in the encoder before going live.
- Check the complete output. Confirm the image is visible, audio is present and not clipping, and the encoder is sending both video and audio. Do not assume that a visible still image means the audio path is working.
Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe obtaining the stream URL and key there.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
- Choose RTMPS if your encoder offers it, then start streaming from the encoder. Depending on the workflow, YouTube shows a preview before you select Go live in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Resolve any audio, video, or connection warning before relying on the broadcast.
Choose stable video and audio settings
YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations list stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
Use YouTube’s resolution- and codec-specific bitrate table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Select a rate your upload connection can sustain consistently. The still image may be visually simple, but the audio feed still needs to reach YouTube continuously, and the encoder must remain capable of sending the configured output.

- Do a preflight test using the actual audio path and the final stream configuration. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement comparable to the real broadcast; for a static-image radio program, check the real audio and final output rather than adding motion to the published program.
- Watch stream-health messages during the live event and respond to warnings rather than assuming a successful preview guarantees a stable all-day broadcast.
Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
Archiving and DVR are different. An archive is a recording available after a stream; DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume while the broadcast is live. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
For DVR, YouTube warns that rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek back to a point before the stream began. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

If you need a dependable recording, do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to create a complete YouTube archive. Keep a local recording or plan shorter sessions and verify that each resulting archive is available. Splitting a stream is a planning response to the documented archive and DVR limits, not a YouTube requirement.
Troubleshoot common problems
- There is a preview, but no sound. Check that the intended audio source is active, that its meter moves in the encoder, and that the stream output includes audio. Recheck the source routing before going live.
- The image appears incorrectly cropped or does not fill the screen. Adjust the image source’s size or crop in the encoder scene, then inspect the YouTube preview before starting the broadcast.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed disconnects. Check the upload connection, verify the selected bitrate against YouTube’s current table, and confirm the encoder is configured for the intended codec and CBR. Monitor Live Control Room while testing and broadcasting.
- The stream works, but there is no complete archive afterward. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local recording or shorter sessions if preserving the program matters, then check each archive after the session.
- Viewers cannot rewind far back during the broadcast. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and DVR cannot go earlier than the stream’s start time.
