Choose the right way to capture the website
First decide what the final result needs to show. A still image is simpler when the page does not change; video is useful when movement or action matters. A video can show scrolling, clicks, hover states, or narration, but it takes longer to review and edit than a still.

For a quick recording without writing code, start with Snipping Tool. For a feature in your own web application, use getDisplayMedia(). For the same demo to run consistently on demand, use Playwright.
Record a website with Windows Snipping Tool
Snipping Tool records a rectangular area, so arrange the browser before capture: open the page, close unrelated tabs and notifications, and remove personal information from view. Microsoft documents the keyboard shortcut Windows logo key + Shift + R for starting a video snip.

- Open the website in your browser and navigate to the page or state you want to show.
- Open Snipping Tool. Select Record, then New. Alternatively, press Windows logo key + Shift + R.
- Drag to select the browser region to record. Include the part of the page and interface the viewer needs; avoid unrelated desktop content.
- Start recording, then perform the demonstration at a pace viewers can follow. Scroll deliberately and pause briefly after important changes.
- Stop the recording and save the clip.
- If the result needs captions or audio, choose Edit in Clipchamp from the Snipping Tool workflow and make the edits there.
This is a manual capture of what appears in the selected rectangle, not an automatic full-page video. If you need to demonstrate a long page, scroll during recording; if you need to show a static page from top to bottom in one artifact, Edge’s full-page screenshot may be more suitable.
Use Edge when a still screenshot is enough
Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot feature can capture an entire webpage, a selected area, or moving content. Press Ctrl + Shift + S to open it, then capture and copy or save the result. A full-page screenshot is not a scrolling video: it is a still image of the page. Choose it when readers need to inspect a long page without watching playback; choose recording when the scroll itself, a click, a hover state, or narration explains the task.
Build browser-based recording with getDisplayMedia()
A web application can request a screen-capture stream using navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia(). The browser asks the user to choose a tab, window, or screen, and permission is required. Call it in response to a user action, show a local preview so the person can see what is being captured, and save the recording. The web.dev example uses WebM for the recording and saves it to the file system.

It uses standard browser APIs; browser support and details can vary, so verify the behavior in the browsers you intend to support.

</script>Run this from a secure context in a browser that supports screen capture and media recording. The person must initiate capture and make a selection in the browser’s prompt; a site cannot silently choose a screen. This example records video without audio. Audio capture options depend on browser and selected source, so do not assume that tab, system, or microphone audio is available in every case. Add clear controls and explain what is recorded before asking for permission.
Record repeatable demos with Playwright
For demos that need to be regenerated, automate the browser actions and enable Playwright video recording for the browser context. Playwright’s video reference describes recordings of browser automation sessions for debugging, documentation, or verification. It documents WebM output and optional cursor rendering, target highlights, click-point markers, and chapter markers.

Add deliberate waits only where a viewer needs time to understand a transition; excessive waits produce dead time. Edit the recording for a clear demonstration
- Trim pauses before the page loads and after the final action.
- Keep the pointer visible when its position explains what to click or inspect.
- Scroll smoothly and stop long enough for viewers to read important sections.
- Add short captions or voiceover when an action would otherwise be unclear; Clipchamp is available from the Snipping Tool workflow for captions or audio.
- Check the exported video at normal playback size. Confirm text remains readable and that no private browser or desktop information appears.
- Follow the destination’s current format and upload requirements when exporting. They can differ by platform, so check the destination rather than assuming one universal resolution or format.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The browser does not show a recording prompt
For a web-app capture, call getDisplayMedia() from a user action such as a button click. The browser requires a user gesture and permission. If permission was declined or the prompt was canceled, let the user try again rather than attempting to start capture in the background.

The recording ends when the user stops sharing
That is expected: the selected capture track can end when the user stops sharing through browser controls. Listen for the track’s ended event and stop the recorder so the resulting file can be finalized.
The saved clip is empty or incomplete
In a MediaRecorder workflow, collect non-empty dataavailable chunks and wait for the recorder’s stop event before creating the final Blob. In Playwright, close the browser context so the video is finalized. For Snipping Tool, confirm that recording actually started before performing the actions.
The page is too small or hard to read
Resize the browser before selecting the Snipping Tool capture rectangle, and keep the selection focused on the page. For a scripted recording, set an appropriate browser viewport in the context. Avoid shrinking the finished video so far that page text becomes unreadable.

The capture contains private or distracting content
Close unrelated tabs and notifications, hide personal details, and inspect the entire clip before sharing. A rectangular desktop capture may include content outside the website if it falls within the selected region.
The result should show the whole page at once
Use Edge’s full-page Screenshot feature for a tall static page. A recording is the better choice when movement or interactions are the point of the demonstration.

Can I make a website video without downloading software?
Yes, if you build a browser-based capture flow with getDisplayMedia(), the browser can request permission and record a selected tab, window, or screen. The user must choose what to share; it is not a silent capture method.
Can I record the website’s audio too?
Audio availability depends on the browser and what the user selects to share. The sample code above intentionally records video only; test the audio behavior in the browsers and capture scenarios you support.
Is a full-page screenshot a screenshot video?
No. A full-page screenshot is a still image. Use a video capture method when the viewer needs to see scrolling or interaction over time.
