You can turn audio files into a radio-style YouTube Live broadcast by preparing a continuous audio program, pairing it with a video feed (even a still image), and sending it to YouTube’s RTMP or RTMPS ingest with FFmpeg. The exact command depends on your files and FFmpeg build, so test the full setup in YouTube Studio before relying on it for a long broadcast.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible and configured for live streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and setup.
  • FFmpeg installed with the input formats, encoders, filters, and output protocol you plan to use. Builds differ; check the FFmpeg documentation and protocol documentation for your version.
  • The audio files for your program, and a visual source such as a still image or video if your stream will include video.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the complete encoded stream.
  • Your YouTube Live Control Room stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password.

FFmpeg handles media preparation and transmission; YouTube provides the live event and ingest details. Audio formats, playlist design, visual treatment, and FFmpeg options vary, so there is no single command that is reliable for every file set and installation.

Prepare the audio program

Choose whether the stream ends or repeats

Decide whether you want a finite broadcast that plays a sequence once or a continuous radio-style stream that repeats. Make the intended order explicit and check the duration of each file so you know when a finite program will end and whether a loop will restart cleanly.

Check file compatibility

Inspect the source files before building the playlist. Inputs with different codecs, sample rates, channel layouts, or other stream properties may not work with the same concatenation method. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer and filters have different requirements; consult the official FFmpeg documentation and verify the appropriate approach for the files and version you have. Re-encoding or normalizing may be needed when the inputs are incompatible.

Account for rights and channel policies

Use audio and visual material you have permission to broadcast. A live stream is not exempt from copyright rules, and permission to listen to or download a track does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s copyright safety checklist before going live. Also make the broadcast meaningfully useful to viewers: a technically continuous stream does not guarantee monetization eligibility or protection from YouTube policy enforcement.

Choose the visual and output settings

Provide a video feed

If the program is audio-led, you can use a still image, a looping visual, or another video layer. Set a deliberate output resolution and frame rate; do not assume that an audio-only input will automatically create a video feed suitable for your chosen YouTube event. Verify the still-image or filter workflow against your FFmpeg version and test that the image actually appears in Studio’s preview.

Match YouTube’s live encoder recommendations

YouTube’s published guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, plus AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the exact matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table rather than assuming one generic value. These are YouTube’s published recommendations accessed on October 3, 2026; check the current table before configuring a stream.

Check which encoders and protocols your local FFmpeg build supports. The installed build—not just the command syntax you find online—determines whether a particular codec and output method will work.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live event and retrieve its stream URL and key; YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the workflow.
  2. Configure FFmpeg’s output destination with the YouTube-provided ingest URL and key. Use a local environment variable or another private configuration method where practical instead of saving a real key in a script that may be shared.
  3. Do not put the key in screenshots, public command examples, source control, or logs you share. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s live stream settings.

A stream key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. Keep it out of this article’s examples and any public documentation.

Elgato Stream Deck +, Audio Mixer and Studio Controller

  • Fully Customizable: Use as an audio mixer, studio controller, production console, etc.
  • Multi Actions, Smart Profiles: trigger multiple actions at once or sequentially, automatically switch between interface configurations for different apps.
  • Powerful Plugins: Elgato Wave Link, Camera Hub, Control Center, OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, Spotify, Philips Hue, and many more
  • Stream Deck App and Store: drag and drop setup, download plugins, icons, thousands of royalty-free tracks, SFX, and more. Regular updates and new plugins frequently added.
  1. Read the audio sequence and, if used, the visual source.
  2. Map the intended audio and video streams explicitly so that the output contains the tracks you expect.
  3. Encode audio to a supported live codec such as AAC and video to a supported choice such as H.264.
  4. Set CBR, the bitrate matching your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and a keyframe interval of two seconds (never more than four).
  5. Send the output to the YouTube-provided RTMP/RTMPS destination and stream key.

Do not treat a copied one-line command as universal: playlist concatenation, looping, still-image input, filters, and escaping differ across operating systems, media files, and FFmpeg builds. Use YOUR_STREAM_KEY as a placeholder in any local template, never your real key, and verify option syntax against the FFmpeg documentation for your installed version.

Run a private or unlisted test first

  1. Start the FFmpeg feed and open its event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  2. Wait for the incoming preview. Confirm that the intended visual is present and the audio is audible, stable, and in the expected order.
  3. Check Studio’s stream-health status and messages, then correct encoding or connectivity issues before making the broadcast public.
  4. During a live broadcast, keep monitoring stream health instead of assuming that an encoder process still running means viewers are receiving a healthy feed.

YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth with a 20% margin above the stream’s total bitrate. That headroom is a recommendation, not a guarantee against interruptions on a shared or unstable connection.

End the broadcast and check the archive

When the program is over, stop the FFmpeg feed cleanly and confirm in Studio that the live event has ended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on automatic archiving for a longer broadcast. See YouTube’s live streaming tips for its guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No incoming preview Incorrect ingest URL or stream key, unsupported output protocol, or FFmpeg build without required support. Recheck the values in Live Control Room, confirm the output protocol and local build capabilities, and restart with a private test.
Video appears but there is no sound The command may not map the audio stream, or the chosen audio encoding/settings may not be suitable. Confirm the input audio is readable, explicitly map it, encode to a supported audio codec, and inspect the preview before going public.
Audio plays in the wrong order, skips, or stops early Playlist or concatenation behavior may not match the source files’ formats and stream properties. Check each input and use the concat or filter method suited to those files and your FFmpeg version; test the full sequence locally first.
Stream drops or health degrades Upload capacity, connection stability, or encoder output may be inadequate for the selected settings. Monitor Studio’s health messages, verify the actual total bitrate, and leave the recommended 20% upload headroom.
YouTube reports encoder settings trouble The codec, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval may not match the selected output or YouTube’s current guidance. Compare each setting with the applicable row in YouTube’s live encoder table; avoid applying a bitrate intended for a different resolution or codec.
The key may have been exposed A stream key was included in a public script, screenshot, repository, or shared log. Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the private FFmpeg configuration.
