Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo create a Python project in PyCharm, choose New Project on the Welcome screen or select File | New Project from the main menu. Choose a project location, select an interpreter environment, and click Create. For most first projects, JetBrains recommends the default Project venv, which keeps dependencies in a virtual environment for that project.
Create a new PyCharm project
- Open the new-project dialog. On the Welcome screen, click New Project. If another project is open, select File | New Project. See JetBrains’ PyCharm project creation guide.
- Choose the project location. Set the folder where the project should live. PyCharm derives the project name from that folder’s name.
- Choose whether to add optional files or Git. You can select Create a main.py welcome script for a starter Python file, and Create Git repository to initialize a Git repository. Both are optional.
- Select an environment. For a typical new project, choose Project venv. Review the available environment choices below if you already use another setup.
- Click Create. If another project is open, PyCharm may ask whether to open the new project in the current window or a separate one. Choosing the current window closes the project currently open there; you can reopen it later.
Choose the right Python environment
A project environment determines which Python interpreter and installed packages the project uses. A dedicated environment helps keep one project’s dependencies separate from other projects.
| Choice | When it fits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Project venv | You are starting a typical project and want its own environment. | JetBrains’ first-project tutorial says the default is adequate in most cases. PyCharm creates the virtual environment in a .venv directory in the project root, using the selected Python version. |
| uv | You already use uv for Python project and environment management. | Choose this environment type when it matches your existing workflow. Availability can depend on your installed tools and setup. |
| Base conda | You use Conda and want to use its base environment. | Select it when that is the environment you intend the project to use; it is not the same as creating a separate project venv. |
| Custom environment | You need to select an existing interpreter or environment. | Use the custom environment flow to point PyCharm to the environment you want. |
The options shown can vary by operating system and installed tools. For example, JetBrains documents downloading a Python version directly from this interface only for Windows and macOS. Consult the first-project tutorial and project creation documentation for the current dialog details.
Open code that already exists
If you already have source files, open the directory containing them rather than creating an empty project around a different folder.
