To create a NEAR wallet today, start at the official NEAR wallet hub, choose one of the currently listed wallet providers, and follow its account-creation flow. Select a self-custody recovery method—an offline seed phrase or a Ledger hardware wallet—before receiving funds. Write any seed phrase in its exact order, keep it offline, and never disclose it. For substantial balances, a hardware wallet provides the strongest documented protection because the private keys remain on the device and transactions require physical confirmation.
What changed at the official NEAR wallet
The address wallet.near.org is still the correct starting point, but it is no longer the single browser wallet many older tutorials describe. The page now says it has evolved into a gateway to the broader NEAR wallet ecosystem. Its current routes include NEAR Mobile, Meteor Wallet, HOT Wallet, Intear Wallet, Nightly Wallet, Sweat Wallet, and access through EVM-compatible wallets.
NEAR scheduled the old browser-wallet functionality to sunset after January 1, 2024. Instructions that tell you to open the legacy web wallet and create an account there are historical. They may still explain concepts such as seed phrases, but they do not describe the current interface. Always begin with the wallet hub and then use the onboarding screens of the provider you select.

Choose a wallet route before creating an account
There is no single “official NEAR wallet app” to install from an old article. The hub is a directory, and each provider can have different software, recovery choices, supported devices, and migration tools. Compare the following points on the provider’s current documentation before you approve account creation:
#1 Best Overall
- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Custody model: Confirm that you control the signing keys (self-custody) or understand exactly which organization controls them.
- Recovery method: Look for a seed phrase, a hardware device, a passkey or MPC design, and a clearly documented export or migration process.
- Device support: Check whether the wallet is a mobile app, browser extension, desktop application, or a combination.
- NEAR functions: Verify support for transfers, staking, NFTs, and the decentralized applications you actually intend to use.
- Transaction review and phishing controls: Look for clear destination display, network warnings, simulation or human-readable prompts, and a way to verify what you are signing.
- Open-source and audit information: Read what code, audits, or security disclosures the provider makes available; do not infer security from a marketing badge.
- Migration and export: Make sure you can move to another wallet or restore on a compatible device if the provider becomes unavailable.
The current hub lists these routes, but the available data does not establish that one of the software providers is safer, cheaper, or better than the others. Fees, rewards, certifications, and feature support can change, so verify those details in the provider you choose rather than relying on a static comparison.
How to create a NEAR wallet
- Open the official hub. Type wallet.near.org yourself or use a bookmark you created. Do not follow a wallet link sent in an unsolicited message or advertisement.
- Select a current provider. Choose the route that matches your device and the NEAR features you need. Follow the link presented on the hub, not an imitation domain.
- Start onboarding. Use the provider’s button labelled “Create wallet,” “Get started,” or an equivalent current label. The wording can differ between mobile, extension, and desktop versions.
- Select self-custody recovery. The documented NEAR/MyNearWallet flow offers either a 12-word seed passphrase or a Ledger hardware wallet. A different current provider may offer an additional method; read its explanation before accepting it.
- Record the recovery material. If you choose a seed phrase, write every word in the displayed order on paper or another offline medium. Do not copy it to a clipboard, photograph it, or store it in an online note. If the wallet asks you to confirm selected words, complete that check without exposing the phrase to anyone.
- Initialize hardware if selected. With Ledger, create or restore the device using the device’s own screen, record its recovery phrase offline, install the required NEAR/Ledger software, and approve transactions only after checking the hardware display.
- Finish account setup. Set the app password, device PIN, passkey, or other local lock offered by the wallet. These protect access to that installation; they are not substitutes for the recovery phrase.
- Verify the receiving account. Copy the NEAR account name or address from the wallet and compare it character by character with the destination you intend to use. A familiar-looking name can still be wrong.
- Fund only after verification. Send a small test amount first when practical, then confirm that it arrived in the intended account. Funding and account-activation rules vary by wallet. Older NEAR onboarding documentation described a minimum funding requirement, but you must check the current provider’s rule instead of assuming the old requirement still applies.
Seed phrase security: the rules that prevent permanent loss
A recovery phrase is the controlling secret for a seed-based wallet. Anyone who obtains it can generally recreate the wallet and move its assets. If you lose it and no second recovery method exists, the wallet may be impossible to restore. Treat the words as a bearer key, not as a password that can be reset by support.
Write it offline and in exact order
Use a clean sheet of paper or a purpose-built metal backup and copy each word exactly as displayed, including its order. Check spelling and numbering before leaving the setup screen. A single missing, substituted, or transposed word can produce a different wallet with no access to the intended funds.
Never type it into a website or message
NEAR’s security guidance is explicit: “Never give out your recovery phrase or private keys.” A legitimate wallet employee, moderator, hardware manufacturer, or support agent will not need the words. Never enter them into a website, support chat, cloud note, password manager, screenshot, online form, diagnostic tool, or screen-sharing session. If a page asks for the full phrase to “synchronize,” “validate,” or “unlock” an account, close it; that is a phishing pattern.
Protect the physical backup
Store the written or engraved backup where unauthorized people cannot reach it and where fire, water, corrosion, and ordinary loss are unlikely to destroy it. Ledger describes a seed phrase as the key to digital assets and recommends a metal medium designed to withstand those hazards. A second copy can protect against one damaged copy, but it also creates another theft opportunity. Make two copies only when you can secure them independently, and do not keep both in the same drawer, safe, or travel bag.

- Seedless by design, nothing to steal: Your private key is generated inside the EAL6+ chip and never leaves it. No seed phrase is shown or typed at setup, so a tampered device, keylogger, or phishing site has nothing to capture. 9+ years, millions of card.
- Tap once to manage your entire crypto wallet across 90 blockchains - no USB cables or Bluetooth, no batteries, no setup. Access 16,100+ coins & tokens, DeFi, NFTs, and staking instantly from your phone
- Backup without a seed phrase: Your wallet is copied to 2 backup cards with end-to-end encryption, so there are no words on paper to lose or leak. Keep them in separate places; if one card is lost, the others restore full access. Optional seed phrase for advanced users.
- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.

Understand passwords and PINs
An application password or hardware-device PIN limits local use of that installation or device. The recovery phrase restores the wallet elsewhere. Changing a PIN does not rotate the phrase, and forgetting a PIN does not necessarily destroy the wallet if the phrase is safely backed up. Conversely, possession of the phrase can bypass the protection provided by a local password.
Using Ledger with NEAR
NEAR’s onboarding guidance says that owners of a Ledger Nano S or X are highly encouraged to use it because the private keys never leave the device. Ledger’s hardware-wallet documentation likewise describes offline transaction signing: the wallet prepares a transaction, the device shows what is being authorized, and you confirm it physically on the hardware screen.
For the commonly searched product description, use the phrase “Ledger Nano S Plus hardware wallet,” but check the current model listing, firmware requirements, and regional availability before buying. Model names and supported software can change. Purchase through a source you can verify, initialize the device yourself, and reject any unit that arrives with a prewritten recovery phrase or a request to type your phrase into a computer.
Ledger setup sequence
- Unbox the device and initialize it on the device itself. Generate a new wallet or choose the restore option only when you already possess a phrase you intentionally want to restore.
- Write the device-generated recovery phrase offline, in order, and verify it through the device’s confirmation prompts. Never accept a phrase supplied by a seller, email, or web page.
- Install the required Ledger and NEAR software from the wallet provider’s current instructions. Keep the device firmware and wallet application current, but verify update prompts through the official software rather than links in messages.
- Connect the device and confirm that the displayed NEAR account matches the account you intend to use.
- When sending funds or interacting with a decentralized application, read the destination, amount, network, and permissions on the hardware screen. Approve only what you understand; the device cannot prevent you from signing a fraudulent transaction you deliberately confirm.
- Disconnect the device after use and store it and its recovery backup separately from everyday computers and phones.
A hardware wallet reduces the chance that malware can extract keys from a computer, but it does not make phishing, a malicious destination, a stolen PIN, or a photographed recovery phrase harmless. The human verification step remains essential.
What to do with an older NEAR account using email or SMS
NEAR’s 2022 security update said new accounts could no longer use email or SMS recovery. If you created an older account with one of those methods, do not assume the recovery email or phone number will still work. The recommended migration was to add a Ledger device or passphrase security, confirm that the new method restores the same account, and then disable email/SMS recovery.

Use the current wallet’s migration tools and the official security notice referenced by your wallet provider. Do not send an old recovery email, verification code, or seed phrase to a person claiming to help. Before disabling the legacy method, test the new recovery method on a separate installation or device so you know it actually controls the intended account.
How to compare the wallet providers listed by NEAR
The hub currently presents seven named wallet routes—NEAR Mobile, Meteor Wallet, HOT Wallet, Intear Wallet, Nightly Wallet, Sweat Wallet, and EVM-wallet access. The names alone do not establish identical capabilities. Use this checklist while reviewing each provider’s current documentation:
| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Custody | Self-custody, externally controlled, or a hybrid model | Determines who can authorize recovery and transactions |
| Recovery | Seed phrase, Ledger, passkey/MPC, or another method; export procedure | Determines whether you can restore or migrate without the provider |
| Devices | Mobile, browser extension, desktop, and hardware-wallet compatibility | Shows where you can safely sign and recover |
| NEAR features | Transfers, staking, NFTs, and decentralized-application connections | Prevents discovering a missing feature after funding the account |
| Transaction protection | Address display, simulation, warnings, and hardware-screen review | Helps you detect a wrong recipient or unexpected permission |
| Transparency | Open-source code, published audits, incident history, and security contacts | Provides evidence to assess the software rather than relying on claims |
| Migration | Documented export, account import, and recovery testing | Reduces dependence on one provider |
Do not rank these providers by fees, rewards, or security certifications unless you have current, region-specific information. Those details can change independently of the wallet hub.
Funding and first-transaction safety
- Confirm the network: Make sure the sending service is using the NEAR network or the exact network your wallet supports. An EVM-compatible route may display different address formats and signing steps.
- Check the account name: Compare the full destination, not just the first and last few characters. Clipboard-changing malware can replace a copied address.
- Test small: Send a small amount, wait for confirmation, and only then send the balance you are prepared to risk.
- Review permissions: For decentralized applications, inspect every requested permission and disconnect unused applications afterward.
- Keep recovery offline: Funding a wallet never requires pasting the phrase into an exchange, bridge, support form, or browser window.
Current wallet-specific rules govern account creation and funding. Because older NEAR documentation included an activation minimum that may no longer apply, read the provider’s live instructions immediately before sending funds.

You lost the app password or device PIN
Do not guess repeatedly if the device imposes a lockout. Restore the wallet using its legitimate recovery process and your offline phrase, or use the hardware device’s documented reset-and-restore procedure. A support agent should not ask you to reveal the phrase.
The phrase restores a different or empty account
Check word order, spelling, and whether you used the correct wallet derivation or account-selection option. Do not create new phrases at random or send funds to the empty account while troubleshooting. If the provider supports account export or migration, use its documented path and keep the original backup untouched.
A Ledger transaction looks wrong
Reject it on the hardware screen. Disconnect from the decentralized application, verify the destination and requested permissions, and investigate the site before reconnecting. A physical confirmation is a final authorization, not an endorsement of the application.
You cannot find an old email/SMS recovery option
That may be expected: NEAR stopped allowing new accounts to use those methods. For an older account, add and test a seed-phrase or Ledger method first, then follow the current wallet’s migration instructions before disabling the legacy method.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical security routine after setup
- Keep the recovery backup offline and inspect it periodically for damage without photographing or digitizing it.
- Use a dedicated browser profile or device for wallet activity when feasible, and install extensions only from links reached through the provider’s verified site.
- Lock your phone, computer, and hardware wallet; update operating systems and wallet software from trusted, in-app or official update paths.
- Bookmark the wallet hub and type sensitive destinations manually rather than trusting unsolicited links.
- Before every transaction, verify the account, amount, network, and permissions. With Ledger, perform that check on the device display.
- Maintain an emergency plan that identifies where the independent backup is stored and how a trusted person could access it only under circumstances you define. Never give the phrase to a helper in advance.
What happens if you lose the recovery phrase?
If the wallet is still unlocked on a device, move assets to a newly created wallet immediately and record the new recovery material offline. Do not rely on the old installation continuing to work; a failed phone, reset browser, or hardware fault can remove your only remaining access. If the wallet is already inaccessible and no second recovery method exists, neither NEAR nor a wallet provider can reconstruct a self-custody phrase for you. That is why testing recovery before depositing a meaningful balance is part of setup, not an optional later task.
