To keep specific words or phrases out of WordPress post titles, use a plugin that explicitly checks titles and lets you choose what happens when it finds a match. WordPress’s built-in Discussion moderation list filters comments, not post titles. For title-only rules, Duplicate Title Validator describes a configurable forbidden-words list with block-or-warn behavior; other plugins can scan more of the post or add a pre-publish checklist.
Choose a rule that matches your publishing workflow
Decide two things before setting up a filter: what text to check and what should happen when a forbidden term appears. Plugin descriptions differ on both points.
| Option | Text checked | What happens on a match | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duplicate Title Validator | Post titles | Choose to block publishing or show a warning. The listing’s version 1.9 notes report server-side checks for REST saves. | A title-specific rule with a configurable response. |
| Spam Word Blocker | Title, content, and excerpt; the listing says it applies to all post types. | A post containing a match is saved as a draft. The listing describes case-insensitive, word-boundary matching and one phrase per line. | A broader publishing filter that checks more than titles. |
| PublishPress Checklists Pro | Pre-publish checklist, including a prohibited-words feature. | Checklist validation. | A site already using editorial checks before publishing. |
| WordPress Discussion moderation and blocklist | Comments | Depending on the setting, matching comments are held for moderation or marked as spam. | Comment filtering only—not title enforcement. |
Set up a title-only forbidden-word rule
1. Check the plugin before installing it
Open the current Duplicate Title Validator listing and check its latest release details, compatibility with your WordPress version and editor, and whether its behavior covers the save routes you use. The listing describes a title filter with block-or-warn behavior and reports REST server-side checks in its version 1.9 notes; verify the current details rather than assuming that note establishes behavior for every version or workflow.
2. Install and configure the plugin
Install the plugin from its WordPress.org listing, then use its settings to add the words or phrases you want to disallow and select whether a match blocks publishing or displays a warning. The listing describes the feature but does not establish a universal settings path or exact field labels, so follow the controls shown by the installed version.

3. Test the result in your publishing workflow
Try a title containing a listed term and confirm the result matches your policy: a hard block should prevent publication, while a warning should alert the author without necessarily stopping the action. If authors use scheduled posts, REST-based tools, or custom post types, test those routes separately; coverage can vary by plugin and configuration.
Use a broader filter if titles are not enough
Spam Word Blocker describes checking the title, post content, and excerpt when a post is published, with a flagged post saved as a draft. Its listing says matching is case-insensitive and based on word boundaries, and that phrases are entered one per line. Choose this kind of rule only if you want to screen the wider post, not just its title.

Use a checklist for editorial review
PublishPress Checklists lists prohibited words as a Pro feature. This approach fits a pre-publishing checklist workflow. It is a different model from a title filter that blocks a save or warns immediately, so check the plugin’s current documentation and plan details to confirm how checklist validation works for your team.
Do not use the comment blocklist for post titles
WordPress’s Settings Discussion screen documents moderation and blocklist controls for comments. The documentation says matching can occur inside words, but it does not describe those fields as a post-title filter. Adding terms there will not create title enforcement.

When custom code is appropriate
A custom implementation may be suitable if a plugin cannot express the rule you need, but filtering displayed title text is not the same as rejecting a save. Enforcement needs to account for the site’s publishing routes, including the block editor, Classic Editor, REST clients, and any custom post types that matter. The available WordPress support discussion does not establish a complete, general-purpose save-validation recipe for all of these routes, so avoid relying on a single title or content filter without testing its save-time behavior.
