To create a pass that people can add to Apple Wallet, choose the pass style that fits its purpose, register a Pass Type ID, obtain its Apple-issued signing certificate, build and sign the pass bundle, then distribute it through an app, website, or email. A related app is not required. For check-in, use a barcode format supported by your scanner; live updates and NFC contactless acceptance are optional features with additional requirements.
Choose the right Apple Wallet pass style
Apple Wallet’s pass styles determine how a pass is presented and which information it can show. For a membership card, start with the generic style. For admission to a particular event, use the event ticket style. Apple also supports store cards, boarding passes, and coupons; use a store card for a store or loyalty card rather than treating every membership as an event ticket. See Apple’s Getting Started with Apple Wallet.
Before building, decide what staff need to see, which identifier your membership or ticketing system will look up, whether the pass is reusable or single-use, and whether its details or status must change after issuance. These decisions shape the fields and the system that accepts the pass; there is no universal membership schema prescribed by Apple.
What you need to issue a pass
- An Apple Developer account and permission to manage its identifiers and certificates. Apple specifies an Account Holder or Admin role for this setup.
- A registered Pass Type ID and the associated Apple-issued Pass Type ID signing certificate.
- A pass bundle containing its data and images, signed with that certificate.
- A delivery route, such as an app, website, or email, and a compatible check-in system if the pass will be scanned.
Apple’s requirement is explicit: “In order to be recognized by Wallet, passes must be signed with an Apple-issued certificate associated with your Apple developer account.” See Apple’s Wallet Passes documentation and the account instructions in Create Wallet identifiers and certificates.

Register the Pass Type ID and certificate
- Sign in to your Apple Developer account with an Account Holder or Admin role.
- Open Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles and register a Pass Type ID for the pass you are issuing. Follow Apple’s current instructions at Register a Pass Type ID.
- Create a Pass Type ID certificate associated with that identifier. Use it to sign the pass bundle before distribution.
Keep the signing certificate under operational control. Apple says passes already installed continue to function after the certificate expires, but the issuer cannot sign new passes or update existing passes until signing is restored. Revoking the certificate causes passes to stop functioning properly. Certificate renewal and revocation are therefore issuance and maintenance concerns, not merely setup details.
Build and sign the pass bundle
A Wallet pass is not just an image or a PDF. Its distributable bundle includes a JSON description, images, and optional localized content, and it must be signed. Apple’s Wallet Passes documentation describes the source files and validation requirements; Apple’s PassKit framework supports creating, distributing, and updating passes.

Prepare the fields and artwork for the chosen pass style, include any required localization, then package and sign the bundle with the certificate associated with its Pass Type ID. Follow Apple’s current file-format and validation guidance rather than assuming that a generic online pass designer or image export creates an installable pass.
Deliver the pass so people can add it
Apple supports distributing a pass in an app, as a web download, or as an email attachment. An organization can offer an Add to Apple Wallet button or badge on its website; a person does not need to install a companion app just to add a pass. Apple recommends using its Add to Wallet badge on distribution surfaces. Its membership guidance also describes SMS, QR codes, and NFC tags as ways to direct people to enrollment or download. A QR code or tag is a route to the pass, not the signed pass itself. See Getting Started with Apple Wallet and Loyalty and membership passes on Apple platforms.

Choose a barcode your check-in system can read
Apple Wallet supports QR, Aztec, and PDF417 barcodes. Put an identifier in the barcode payload that the ticketing, access-control, or membership system at the point of use can decode. Confirm the accepted format and payload with that system’s vendor, then test using the scanner hardware expected at the venue. Apple notes: “An optical scanner works better for scanning an iPhone screen than a laser scanner.” The guidance is from Apple; no venue-specific scanner compatibility is implied.
If scanning is unavailable, the pass can also display a membership or account number as text below the barcode. That fallback does not replace confirming how staff will look up or validate the number.

Add server-based updates only if the pass needs them
A pass can remain static after issuance. If its information must change, Apple provides an optional web-service update flow using webServiceURL and authenticationToken. The issuer’s server registers installed passes and devices, sends a push notification when a pass changes, and provides a newly signed pass. The replacement keeps the same pass type identifier and serial number. Apple requires HTTPS for a production update service, and Wallet pass-update push notifications work only in production. Read Distributing and updating a pass and Adding a Web Service to Update Passes.
This option means maintaining secure authentication, pass and device registrations, a signing process for replacements, and the update service itself. A pass does not update automatically just because it is in Wallet.

Decide whether NFC contactless acceptance is actually needed
There are two different NFC use cases. An NFC tag can direct someone to an enrollment or download link. Contactless membership or loyalty redemption at a payment terminal is a more specialized implementation: Apple specifies an NFC certificate, a certified pass provider, a VAS-certified terminal or reader, and point-of-sale software that supports the relevant VAS modes. Ask the terminal, POS, and loyalty vendors about certifications and compatibility before planning a tap-to-check-in launch. See Apple’s loyalty and membership guidance.
Apple’s page lists providers including Airship, Lava, Passcreator, PassEntry, PassKit, Paytronix, Pronto CX, Punchh, Stell, and Vibes. Apple says the list is not exhaustive and that listed providers are not affiliated with Apple. Their presence on the list does not establish current pricing, availability in every country, or suitability for a particular project; verify those details and exact capabilities directly.
Build it yourself or use a managed pass provider?
| Approach | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Build with PassKit and your own service | You control the pass design and integration. Your organization handles signing, delivery, and any update infrastructure it needs. | Ownership of certificate operations, integration with the existing membership or ticketing database, barcode compatibility, delivery, and ongoing maintenance. |
| Use a managed pass provider | A provider may handle parts of issuance, integrations, segmentation, or updates. | Exact features, system integrations, support, terms, geography, and total cost. Apple’s provider listing is not a comparison or endorsement. |
| Add NFC contactless acceptance | You add a certified contactless flow rather than relying on a basic barcode pass. | Certified pass provider, VAS-compatible terminal or reader, compatible POS software, and vendor support for the intended use. |
For any route, make the decision against the organization’s real acceptance flow: existing data systems, post-issuance changes, scanners, delivery channels, geography, support, and total operating cost. NFC adds certification and terminal/POS compatibility to that list.
