To create a continuous YouTube stream for a history podcast, send a looping playlist of recorded episodes from an encoder—such as OBS on a computer—to a YouTube Live broadcast. Prepare the episode order and visuals, enable livestreaming on the channel, create a broadcast in YouTube Studio, and connect the encoder with the stream URL and stream key. A cloud playout service is another option if you do not want a computer running at home.
1. Prepare the podcast episodes and playlist
Decide what listeners will hear and how the feed will cycle. You might play episodes in a fixed chronological order, run a curated theme block, or shuffle a selected playlist. The queue is your editorial choice; YouTube does not prescribe a particular episode order.
- Confirm you have the necessary rights for every episode and included asset, including music, archival audio, interview or documentary excerpts, photographs, maps, and sound effects.
- Keep the episode files in the intended playback order and test transitions and audio levels before going live.
- Use a persistent visual such as episode artwork or a program slate. Showing the podcast name, current episode title, and where to find the regular episode archive helps viewers understand what is playing.
- Keep individual episode uploads with descriptive titles if you want viewers to find programs separately; a continuous feed need not replace your episode catalog.
The visual recommendations are editorial choices, not YouTube technical requirements. A static graphic also does not, by itself, make repetitive material eligible for monetization.
2. Choose where the stream will run
Run an encoder on your own computer
YouTube lists OBS as a no-charge, open-source encoder. With this route, the computer, media files, encoder, and network connection must remain available for the duration of the broadcast. A dedicated computer is optional; YouTube does not require a mini PC or any particular hardware form factor.

Use cloud playout
YouTube’s encoder directory lists cloud services including Gyre and Upstream for continuous streams of prerecorded video. The listing establishes them as options, not as endorsements or guarantees of reliability. Check each provider’s current availability, capabilities, pricing, and interruption handling directly before choosing a service.
When comparing local and cloud playout, consider playback control, operating effort, recovery after a fault, storage and upload needs, and current cost. No independent reliability or price comparison is established here.
3. Create the YouTube Live broadcast
- Enable livestreaming in advance. First-time channel enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help, so do not leave this until launch time.
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one. Choose public, private, or unlisted visibility and enter an accurate title and description. Scheduling can provide a shareable page and reminders.
- Copy the connection details. Get the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room and enter them in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
- Start the encoder. Confirm that it is sending the episode playlist and visual. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview to appear, then start the broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Check the viewer experience. Use a separate viewer session to confirm audio is present, the visual is legible, episodes advance as intended, and the title and description match the programming.
Exact bitrate, resolution, encoding preset, bandwidth, and reconnection settings are not specified here. Consult YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance and the documentation for your chosen encoder rather than relying on generic numerical settings.

4. Plan for interruptions and archives
A continuous live feed and a complete replay are different things. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on YouTube to create one complete video-on-demand archive of a 24/7 stream.
If complete recordings matter, retain the source episodes and publish them separately, or configure independent recording and storage for the long feed. Another approach is to run separately planned broadcasts under the archive limit. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes both a continuing 24/7 feed and reusable streams for multiple broadcasts, but that API-level model is not a beginner’s YouTube Studio walkthrough.
5. Clear rights for live playback and archives
YouTube makes the provider responsible for having the necessary rights to live and archived material. Its systems scan live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a warning placeholder, interruption, or termination; claims can also appear on the archived video after a stream ends. For licensed material that triggers a match, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist.

For a history podcast, check the specific recording and asset you plan to rebroadcast. The age of a historical subject does not establish that a particular recording, photograph, edition, or performance is free to use. Do not assume that a work is cleared solely because it is old or appears in another online video.

Only eligible YouTube Partner Program channels can monetize live streams, and channel-level monetization policies apply. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified its policy label from “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content,” including repetitive or mass-produced material that lacks sufficient original, authentic, educational, or other value.
Substantive history episodes may provide educational value, but monetization eligibility is not guaranteed. Preserve the original episodes and useful labeling; do not treat a repeated feed with a static image as a dependable monetization strategy. Check YouTube’s current policy before making revenue plans.

Troubleshooting a continuous podcast stream
- Livestreaming is not enabled: Enable it on the channel ahead of launch; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder does not connect: Check that it has the correct stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- A scheduled broadcast has no live preview: Check that the encoder is sending its feed. Start the event from Live Control Room after the preview appears.
- The stream is interrupted by a rights match: Review the audio and visual assets in the affected episode. Obtain the required permissions; if licensed content is matched, ask the rights owner whether the channel needs a Content ID allowlist entry.
- The full 24/7 program is not available as one replay: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. Use independent recording and storage or retain and publish the source episodes separately.
- Episodes do not advance as planned: Check the playlist order and playback behavior in the encoder or playout service, then verify the transition in a separate viewer session.
