You can make a continuous YouTube live stream by using OBS Studio to send a static image and looping audio to YouTube’s Live Control Room. The stream stays live only while the encoder continues sending its feed, so your computer, network connection, and OBS need to keep running. Follow the setup and checks below before relying on it for a 24/7 broadcast.
What you need
- OBS Studio on a computer that can remain on and connected to the internet.
- A static image and either one audio file to loop or several local audio files for a playlist.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Permission to broadcast every image and audio track in your stream.
YouTube documents both software encoders and hardware encoders. It recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but does not require a particular computer or encoder for this setup. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Build the static-image and audio scene in OBS
Add the image
- Open OBS and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select +, choose Image, and add the image file you want to show.
- Resize and position the image in the preview so it fills the output canvas as intended. Check that no unwanted blank areas or overlays are visible.
Loop one audio file
- In Sources, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the local audio file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Confirm that the source is not muted and that its audio meter responds during playback.
Cycle through multiple files
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In Sources, select + and add VLC Video.
- Add the local files in the order you want them to play, then enable Loop Playlist.
- Play the source and check that it advances through the playlist and returns to the beginning.
OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among its supported audio formats. For the available source options, see the OBS media sources documentation.
Configure OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select one you have already set up.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room. Treat the key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Enter the details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube or the appropriate custom streaming service option, and enter the stream URL and key as applicable.
- Set encoder output. For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s settings guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose a sustainable bitrate. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate. Select a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, then test the stream rather than assuming your connection can support a particular setting. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide provides its recommended settings.
- Start and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview for the image, audio, and stream-health indicators. Confirm that audio is audible and the picture is present before treating the setup as ready.
Test and operate the stream
Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and continuously monitoring stream quality. Keep OBS running and monitor the connection, audio, and video; a single encoder broadcast is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 uptime.

- Verify that the image remains on screen and the audio loops or advances through the playlist as expected.
- Check the Live Control Room for warnings or degraded stream health.
- Use a stable upload connection that can sustain the selected bitrate. If the stream drops, restore the encoder feed and verify the preview again.
- Consider software versus hardware encoding based on how you plan to operate, monitor, and recover the stream. YouTube’s guidance describes both routes but does not establish that a dedicated machine is necessary.
Plan for the replay archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes a complete YouTube replay unreliable for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. If you need a full archive, make a local recording backup; do not promise viewers that YouTube will retain the entire continuous stream. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Check rights before broadcasting a playlist
Having an audio file does not establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to have all rights necessary for live use, including relevant music rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Check that the rights cover livestreaming and the territories where you intend to make the stream available. The stream must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |

| No image in the YouTube preview | The image source is missing, hidden, or outside the visible canvas, or the encoder is not sending video. | Check that the OBS image source is enabled and visible in the preview, then confirm the Live Control Room is receiving the stream. |
