To create a 24/7 YouTube live radio stream, prepare audio and visuals you have the rights to broadcast, connect an encoder to a YouTube Live event with its stream URL and key, test the actual feed, and plan for continuous monitoring and recovery. One important limitation: YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.

Before you start: confirm live access and rights

Check channel eligibility before building an always-on setup. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by a creator who is at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming access guidance.

Make sure you have the necessary rights for every audio track and visual element. YouTube’s terms put responsibility for those rights on the person providing the live content, including music licensing rights. A track available in a consumer music app is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast.

Prepare the radio program and visuals

Choose a program you can legally broadcast

Use music and other audio whose license explicitly permits YouTube livestreaming. Check whether the permission covers your intended territories, monetization, and any later archive or video-on-demand use. If a track is licensed from a rights holder, ask whether your channel must be added to that holder’s Content ID allowlist: YouTube warns that a live stream can still be interrupted when licensed third-party material is not allowlisted.

Build the visual feed

Choose visuals that you have permission to use, such as a still image, animated scene, or other visual presentation appropriate to the radio program. The encoder combines the visual and audio into the feed sent to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder overview describes software and hardware encoder options, as well as overlays: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

The exact way to loop a playlist or animate a scene depends on the encoder you choose. Confirm that it can keep the intended audio and visual sources running continuously; do not assume that a still image or media playlist will restart correctly without testing it.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule one, then review the event details and visibility before broadcasting.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Enter both in the encoder’s YouTube streaming or destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or show it in screenshots. You can replace it in YouTube if it is exposed.
  3. Start the encoder’s output. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed and show a preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that both sound and visuals are present before using the event’s go-live controls.
  4. Check the live event after it starts. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s output status. Keep Live Control Room accessible so you can respond if the feed becomes unstable.

YouTube documents this encoder connection sequence in its Live Control Room encoder guide.

Choose output settings and test the real feed

Set the encoder to a bitrate your internet connection can sustain consistently, rather than choosing a high setting that causes dropped frames. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of about 2 seconds, not more than 4 seconds. Its recommended H.264 examples include:

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 3 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended figures for the listed H.264 settings, not a guarantee that a particular network or encoder will perform reliably. The suitable bitrate also depends on the selected codec and the stability of your upload connection. YouTube transcodes live output for viewers on different devices and network conditions. See its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolution guidance.

Before relying on the channel, run a private or unlisted test with the same audio, visuals, and encoder settings you intend to use. Check for missing or intermittent audio, clipping, frozen visuals, dropped frames, and a working YouTube preview. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio representative of the actual broadcast, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its encoder settings guidance and live-streaming tips cover these checks.

Plan around long-stream archives and continuity

A continuously running feed can serve as a 24/7 channel, but do not promise viewers that one extremely long broadcast will produce a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable. Check YouTube’s current guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.

If having a replay matters, keep a separate local recording and consider shorter scheduled events. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal restart schedule or guarantee that a particular automation method will work, so verify the behavior in your own Studio setup before relying on it.

Continuity also depends on the systems feeding the encoder. Plan how you will handle interruptions to the encoder, computer or hardware, power, storage, internet connection, and audio source. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality and checking local archive file integrity. For unattended operation, assign someone to monitor the broadcast and respond to failures; YouTube does not guarantee that your 24/7 production will stay online.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not show an incoming preview Encoder destination, stream URL, or stream key Confirm that the encoder is sending to the URL shown for this event and that the correct key is selected. Check the encoder’s output status, then wait for Live Control Room to register the feed.
Stream health reports instability or frames are dropped Upload connection or encoder load Check upload bandwidth and stability. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the current settings, then retest using representative audio and visuals.
Audio is silent, intermittent, or distorted Audio source, routing, or levels Check that the intended input is active and routed to the encoder, listen to the YouTube preview, and adjust levels to prevent clipping. Test the full program rather than only a brief sample.
Visuals freeze or fail to loop Media source or encoder scene Confirm the selected source is still active and that its playback or looping behavior is supported by the encoder. Observe a complete cycle during a test before leaving it unattended.
The live stream is interrupted over music Rights status or Content ID allowlisting Review the music license for live-broadcast rights and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for the channel. Do not assume that a generic royalty-free label guarantees clearance.
A very long stream has no complete replay or rewind YouTube archive and DVR limits For streams exceeding 12 hours, YouTube says capture may not happen and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Keep a local recording if you need an archive and evaluate shorter events.

Optional hardware encoder route

You do not need dedicated hardware to create an encoder-based live stream. YouTube also lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and describes an optional scheduling feature for sending prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is an advanced alternative, not a requirement; check YouTube’s encoder guide for its current description.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud. Set it up in three steps:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it or charge quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo for plan details and pricing. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
