To run recorded university classes as a continuous YouTube Live channel, prepare an approved and rights-cleared set of recordings, enable live streaming on a verified YouTube channel, then send a looping playlist to YouTube through an encoder. YouTube can receive the feed from software, cloud services, or hardware; whichever you choose, plan who will monitor and recover it. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so set up and test well before launch.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and institutional approval
- Use an account and channel approved by the university, following its access and governance procedures.
- YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enable live streaming early: first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and encoder setup guide describe these requirements.
- Ask the relevant campus offices to confirm applicable copyright, privacy, consent, accessibility, records-retention, and procurement requirements. The answer can vary by institution and jurisdiction.
Clear every recording for rebroadcast
Before uploading or scheduling a class, confirm that the university has permission to rebroadcast all material in it, including the instructor’s performance, student image or voice, slides, readings, music, guest contributions, and third-party video or other media. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream. Even where material is licensed, the rights holder may need to add the channel to its allowlist for live use.
YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Treat rights clearance as a prerequisite for both the live broadcast and any resulting replay.
Choose how the continuous feed will run
A 24/7 stream needs a system to play the recordings and a person or process responsible for starting, monitoring, and recovering the feed. YouTube’s encoder guide lists software, cloud, and hardware examples, but those listings are not an independent comparison or endorsement.

| Approach | What it means for a university | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | A computer runs the encoder and sends the feed to YouTube. It may suit a staffed setup. | Who keeps the computer and network available, monitors playback, restarts failures, and manages class-by-class recordings and replays. |
| Cloud streaming service | A cloud service plays uploaded recordings and sends the feed without relying on a campus computer staying on. | Looping and scheduling, recovery, archive handling, stream-key access controls, support, and total cost. |
| Dedicated hardware | A standalone encoder can send a feed; YouTube’s guide describes AJA HELO Plus as having PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. | Who configures and monitors the hardware, how it handles playlists and failures, and how replays and local recordings are preserved. |
Choose based on operating responsibility, continuity and recovery, scheduling and looping, archive workflow, network dependence, security, support, and cost. A dedicated device is not required. The official YouTube listing establishes examples, not comparative reliability or performance.
Prepare the recordings and viewer navigation
Organize playback
Use recordings the university has cleared for broadcast and arrange them in the intended sequence. A continuous feed is useful for scheduled or ambient viewing, but it is not a good substitute for a direct route to a particular lecture. Keep individual class recordings available separately where permissions and campus policy allow.

Tell viewers what is on
Make the course, lecture title, and current or upcoming program clear to viewers, and provide a schedule or playlist that helps them find a specific class. Check that the displayed title and description remain useful as the playlist advances.
Create the YouTube Live stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a new live stream or schedule one for the intended start time.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings, following the encoder’s own instructions. The key authorizes an encoder to send a feed to the channel, so treat it like a password: share it only with approved operators and reset it if compromised.
- Configure the playlist or media source. Select the cleared class recordings and confirm the playback order and loop or schedule behavior in the chosen encoder or service.
- Start the encoder, then check Live Control Room. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed, inspect the preview, and confirm the watch page behaves as intended before announcing the launch.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the platform connection workflow. Exact controls for playlist playback vary by encoder.

Test stream quality, monitoring, and recovery
Run a representative test before launch. Check audio and video, preview the incoming signal, load the watch page, and confirm the campus upload connection can sustain the feed. YouTube recommends maintaining 20% spare upload bandwidth above the stream bitrate; for example, a feed requiring 10 Mbps calls for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Decide who receives alerts and who is authorized to restart the encoder or switch the feed.
- Test the recovery procedure for an encoder, computer, hardware, or network failure; do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will repair itself.
- Check the stream-health indicators in Live Control Room during the test and while the channel is operating.
- Confirm the audio remains audible and the image is present after playlist transitions, not only at the start.
Plan replays separately from the 24/7 feed
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous stream that exceeds 12 hours is beyond that stated automatic-archive threshold, so do not rely on YouTube to create one complete replay of the whole broadcast. Preserve the original class recordings and plan a separate method for individual replays and course playlists. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream archives.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | The channel is not verified, has a recent live-stream restriction, or live streaming has not finished activating. | Check channel verification and restrictions, enable live streaming, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| YouTube receives no signal | The encoder has an incorrect server URL or stream key, or has not started sending. | Compare the encoder destination with the current Live Control Room details, then restart the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update approved encoders. |
| Video or audio is unstable | The upload connection may not have enough capacity or may fluctuate. | Check stream health and the available upload bandwidth; retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. |
| A live stream is interrupted or terminated | YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the encoder or connection may have failed. | Review YouTube notifications and the rights for the material; have the assigned operator follow the tested restart or switch procedure. |
| A complete replay is missing | The continuous stream exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive threshold. | Use the preserved source recordings and the institution’s separate replay workflow rather than expecting one full automatic archive. |
