Use a connected spear or halberd screen, keep a reserve beside your artillery and ranged units, and focus missile fire only after the horsemen are pinned. Tomb Kings Skeleton Horsemen are fast, shielded light cavalry with 76 speed and vanguard deployment. They are dangerous when they find an open flank, but they are poor at grinding through prepared anti-large infantry. Let your screen receive the charge, shoot the trapped unit, then counter-charge or pursue only when the rest of the battle is secure.
What Skeleton Horsemen are trying to do
Skeleton Horsemen are not designed to win a head-on contest with a formed infantry line. Their battlefield job is harassment: reaching war-machine crews, weapons teams, isolated archers and other units that cannot protect themselves. The Total War: Warhammer Wiki lists them as Tomb Kings light cavalry with 76 speed, 24 melee attack, 26 melee defence, 34 charge bonus and 5,340 health. They are shielded, described as very fast, have vanguard deployment, and are subject to crumbling and disintegration.
Those traits create a clear threat pattern. Vanguard deployment lets a unit begin closer to your army or approach from an unexpected angle. Speed 76 allows it to pass around a slow battle line, disengage from a losing fight and redirect toward a second target. The shield helps it survive some small-arms fire while closing. The charge bonus makes the first impact more dangerous than its sustained melee performance.

Once Skeleton Horsemen are held in place by a unit with an anti-large or spear-type bonus, they lose the freedom that makes them valuable. A prepared infantry unit can keep them occupied while missiles fire into the melee, and a reserve can hit their flank. Their role description and the class interactions published by Total War Academy both point to the same answer: deny the approach, pin the cavalry, and punish it instead of chasing it.

The best counter classes
Spear and halberd infantry
A spear or halberd unit is the dependable default because it can stand in the lane Skeleton Horsemen need to cross. Choose the version with an anti-large bonus when your roster offers one. Keep the unit in a compact formation, face it toward the likely approach and avoid stretching the line so thin that the cavalry can slip around its end.
Halberds usually trade some speed or general-purpose melee performance for stronger anti-large staying power. Spears are often cheaper or available earlier, making them the practical answer when the army is still developing. The exact unit names, recruitment buildings and upkeep depend on your faction; the important properties are the anti-large bonus, enough melee defence to absorb the charge and sufficient models to keep the horsemen surrounded.

Anti-large specialists
Any unit explicitly marked anti-large is a priority choice for this matchup. Anti-large bonuses are designed to punish large targets such as cavalry. Put the specialist where it protects the most valuable target, not automatically in the center. If the enemy has several cavalry units, distribute your anti-large units so that one charge cannot break through to your artillery park.
Protected missile units
Missiles are the damage engine, not the initial screen. Archers, crossbows, guns or other ranged units should fire after a spear or halberd unit has fixed the horsemen in place. A shielded target can reduce the value of frontal fire during its approach, so wait for a side or rear angle when the formation allows it. Keep the shooters close enough to support the screen but far enough back that one charge cannot reach them.

Mobile responses
Durable anti-large cavalry, monstrous units with suitable bonuses or repeated flank charges can finish Skeleton Horsemen after they are pinned. Use mobile units to threaten their escape route, not to duel unsupported in the open. Fragile shock cavalry can lose a prolonged melee if it charges without infantry support, especially after the initial impact has been absorbed.

Do not judge an option only by its theoretical damage. Compare anti-large bonus, melee staying power, speed, missile range and damage, and its ability to guard the backline. Cost and campaign availability decide whether that role can actually be fielded in your current army; exact prices are not fixed across factions and patches.

Deployment: prevent the vanguard dive
- Scout the deployment zone. Identify likely vanguard positions, woods, hills and lanes that bypass your main line. Assume a horsemen unit can appear on either flank until you confirm otherwise.
- Connect the frontline. Deploy spears or halberds in a continuous line with overlapping coverage. Leave no open lane directly to artillery, ranged units or characters who cannot withstand a charge.
- Place a reserve behind each vulnerable flank. A reserve can be a second spear unit, an anti-large specialist or a durable mobile unit. Keep it close enough to respond before the horsemen reach their target.
- Anchor the backline. Put missiles and artillery behind the screen, not on an exposed outer flank. Terrain, map edges and friendly units can shorten the number of directions that need guarding.
- Keep spacing practical. Ranged units need room to fire, but excessive gaps create charge lanes. Leave enough distance that a single charge cannot pass through the screen and contact the shooters.
- Hold the formation until contact. Do not send ordinary infantry or artillery crews forward to chase a fast unit before the main engagement begins.
Total War Academy summarizes the underlying class relationship this way: “Many of the golden rules of ancient warfare apply: cavalry are thwarted by spear-wielding infantry, spear-wielding infantry suffer against swordsmen, swordsmen are vulnerable to archers, and archers are in trouble against cavalry.” Skeleton Horsemen exploit the final part of that chain; your deployment should restore the spear-versus-cavalry matchup before they can reach the archers.
The battle sequence that consistently works
1. Let the screen receive the charge
Select the spear or halberd unit and face it toward the incoming cavalry. Avoid turning the whole army toward a feint. If the horsemen are approaching one flank, rotate the local screen and leave the rest of the line engaged with its original opponent. A stationary, braced reception is safer than chasing a unit whose greatest advantage is speed.
2. Pin the unit instead of spreading damage
Once the charge lands, keep the anti-large unit in contact. Do not pull it away merely because the first impact looks rough; breaking contact gives the horsemen the opening they wanted. If a second cavalry unit arrives, send the reserve to close the gap rather than moving the original screen and exposing the backline.

3. Focus fire while the horsemen are trapped
Order one or two missile units to concentrate on the pinned target. Check firing arcs so that shots do not pass through your own infantry or hit a more urgent threat. Side and rear angles are preferable because the shield is most useful from the front. If several targets are available, eliminate the unit closest to your artillery or ranged troops first.

After the horsemen are fixed, charge their flank or rear with a reserve, a durable mobile unit or another anti-large formation. The purpose is to shorten the engagement and reduce the chance that they can disengage with enough models to threaten another target. Do not send fragile shock cavalry alone into the front of a still-fresh unit.
5. Pursue only when the main threat is contained
Skeleton Horsemen can disengage and redirect quickly. A pursuit that pulls your screen far from the army may open a new route to your missiles. Chase only when the unit is close to collapse, the enemy’s other threats are controlled and your backline remains covered. Undead crumbling or disintegration can finish the job without a long chase if you keep pressure on them.
Protecting artillery and ranged units
Use a bodyguard, not a single reaction click
Assign a specific spear or halberd unit to each vulnerable side of the artillery park. A general order to “guard the rear” often fails when the main line moves forward. A named bodyguard has a clear position and can intercept a vanguard unit before it reaches the crews.
Keep missiles close enough to support the screen
If archers are deployed too far back, they may lose line of sight or spend too long repositioning after the pin. If they are too close, the horsemen can charge through the screen. The useful middle ground is a short supporting distance behind the anti-large unit, with terrain or a second unit reducing the number of approach angles.

Do not use artillery crews as bait
Artillery crews and ordinary ranged units are poor emergency counters. Their damage is valuable when firing, but they should not be ordered to chase cavalry across the map. Let the screen and reserve handle contact while the crews continue their primary task whenever the firing lane is safe.

When you have strong missiles
Build the battle around a disciplined pin. Keep two or more missile units behind a solid anti-large line, reserve ammunition for the moment the horsemen commit, and concentrate fire rather than splitting shots across several fast targets. If the enemy refuses to charge, your protected missiles can force them to approach under fire; if they charge, the screen provides the safe firing window.
When you have weak or short-ranged missiles
Invest more heavily in the frontline. Two layers of spears can deny the approach even when missile damage is modest. The first layer receives the charge; the second blocks the retreat path or replaces a damaged unit. A compact formation matters more than trying to win a speed contest with ordinary infantry.
When you have mobile units but few polearms
Use mobility to threaten the horsemen’s destination and force them toward your main line. Durable anti-large cavalry can intercept, while another unit protects the ranged troops. Avoid a single unsupported duel: if your mobile unit is pinned away from help, the Skeleton Horsemen can exploit its lower staying power and then continue to the backline.
When resources are tight
A cheap spear screen plus one or two missile units is usually more reliable than attempting to counter fast cavalry with ordinary infantry alone. Cover the most valuable target first—often artillery or a high-damage ranged unit—and accept that a less important flank may need to fall back toward the main line. Recruitment buildings, upkeep and campaign availability vary by faction, so confirm the current roster before planning a force around a specific unit.

How to adapt when there are several Skeleton Horsemen units
Against one unit, a single protected flank may be enough. Against several, treat the battle as a perimeter problem. Use a wider connected line, keep at least one reserve near the center of the backline and avoid committing every anti-large unit to the first contact. The second or third unit is often the one that reaches the artillery after your initial response has moved away.
Prioritize targets by the damage they can inflict and the distance they must travel. A unit already inside your formation should be pinned and destroyed first. A unit still outside the line can be screened by rotating a reserve or pulling the threatened missile unit behind the main body. Do not split your army into isolated chases; force every cavalry unit to cross the same protected zone.
Campaign and patch considerations
The counter principles apply across factions because they rely on battlefield roles rather than a single roster. Exact unit names, recruitment buildings, costs, technologies and balance values can change with patches and downloadable content. Before committing to a campaign build, inspect the current unit card for anti-large bonuses, charge defence, speed, missile range and ammunition. A unit that fills the role in one faction may be unavailable, too expensive or unlocked too late in another.
Likewise, do not assume the listed 76 speed, 24 melee attack, 26 melee defence, 34 charge bonus or 5,340 health will remain unchanged forever. A quick pre-battle checklist
- Do I have at least one spear, halberd or anti-large unit covering each exposed approach?
- Are my ranged units and artillery behind the frontline rather than on an unguarded flank?
- Is a reserve close enough to intercept a vanguard unit before it reaches the backline?
- Can my missiles fire from a side or rear angle once the horsemen are pinned?
- Have I selected the first target to focus, instead of splitting fire?
- Will pursuing this unit open a lane to a more dangerous enemy unit?
If the answer to the first three questions is no, adjust deployment before the battle starts. Skeleton Horsemen are most dangerous when they make you improvise after the charge; they are much easier to defeat when every vulnerable lane already has a designated answer.
