To correct a 1099 filed through the IRS Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) Taxpayer Portal, open the transmission that contains the error, select Correct/Replace, edit the form, and submit the correction as a new transmission. Do not file the original form again. Send the recipient a corrected statement and keep the new submission identifiers for your records.
Publication 5717 (Rev. 9-2026) states: “You must submit corrections through the portal for information returns submitted through the IRIS Taxpayer Portal.” The correction method depends mainly on whether the error is in the data or in the form type.
Choose the correction method before editing anything
Most mistakes on an IRIS-filed 1099 are corrected in one submission. A wrong form type requires two submissions: one to eliminate the erroneous record and another to file the right form as an original return.
| Error | IRIS method | What to submit |
|---|---|---|
| Incorrect payee name or taxpayer identification number (TIN) | One-step correction | Open the original record, correct the name or TIN, and submit through Correct/Replace. |
| Wrong payment amount | One-step correction | Correct the amount and submit the corrected record. |
| Wrong code or indicator | One-step correction | Correct the code or indicator and submit the corrected record. |
| Return filed for someone who should not have received one | One-step correction | Submit a correction with zero in all amount fields for that erroneous record. |
| Wrong form type, such as Form 1099-MISC instead of Form 1099-NEC | Two-step correction/replacement | First zero the amounts on the erroneous record; then submit the correct form as an original return. |
This table applies to information returns submitted through the IRIS channel. Paper-form procedures are different and should not be substituted for the portal workflow.

One-step corrections in the IRIS Taxpayer Portal
When to use a one-step correction
Use a one-step correction when the form type is correct but information on the record is wrong. Typical examples include a misspelled recipient name, an incorrect TIN, a payment reported in the wrong box, an incorrect code, or an indicator that should not have been selected. The same approach applies when a return was filed for a recipient who should not have received one; in that case, enter zero for every amount on the correcting record.
Step 1: Find the original transmission
- Sign in to the IRIS Taxpayer Portal with the account associated with your transmitter credentials.
- Locate the transmission that contains the erroneous 1099. Use the transmission details and form records to confirm that you have selected the correct tax year, recipient, and form.
- Do not start a new original return for the same record. The correction must be linked to the return already submitted.
Step 2: Start Correct/Replace
- Select the form or forms that need changes.
- Click Correct/Replace. IRIS starts a correction process for the selected records.
- The selected forms appear on the Unsubmitted Forms page. They are not corrected until you edit them and submit the new transmission.
Step 3: Edit and review the record
- Open each form on the Unsubmitted Forms page.
- Change only the fields that are wrong, while checking that the recipient, tax year, form type, payment boxes, codes, and indicators are consistent.
- If the return should never have been filed for that recipient, set every amount field to zero as required for the correction.
- Review the record before submission. A correction that fixes one field but leaves another error can require another correction and another recipient statement.
Step 4: Submit the correction as a new transmission
- Submit the reviewed records from the correction workflow.
- Save the new transmission identifier, submission identifier, receipt information, and any status or confirmation displayed by IRIS.
- Keep those identifiers with the original filing records. The corrected submission, not a resubmitted original, is the evidence that you attempted to repair the return.
Step 5: Furnish the recipient
Give the recipient a corrected statement after submitting the correction. Use the corrected information that you sent through IRIS and retain proof of when and how the statement was furnished. The IRS portal submission does not replace the payer’s obligation to provide the recipient with an updated form.
Two-step corrections when the form type is wrong
Why a wrong form type is different
A form-type error is not fixed by changing a box on the existing form. For example, if a payment that belongs on Form 1099-NEC was filed as Form 1099-MISC, the erroneous 1099-MISC record must be removed from the information reported before the correct 1099-NEC is filed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 1: Correct the erroneous record to zero
- Find the original transmission containing the wrong form.
- Select that record and choose Correct/Replace.
- On the correction, zero the money amounts on the erroneous record. Keep the correction tied to the original record rather than filing a second original 1099-MISC.
- Review and submit this zero-dollar correction as a new transmission.
Step 2: File the correct form as original
- Create the correct form type as a new original return. In the example above, create Form 1099-NEC with the correct recipient and payment data.
- Use the correct form’s normal original-return workflow; do not mark the new form as a correction of the wrong form.
- Submit it and save the transmission and receipt information.
- Furnish the recipient the correct form and explain, if needed, that the earlier form type was replaced.
Submitting only the new form leaves the wrong form on file. Submitting only the zero-dollar correction leaves the recipient without the correct information return. Both steps are required for a wrong-form situation.
Correcting a wrong TIN, name, amount, code, or indicator
Wrong recipient name or TIN
For an IRIS-filed return, an incorrect payee name or TIN is generally a one-step correction. Use the original form’s Correct/Replace action, update the identifying information, review the entire record, and submit the correction. Confirm that the corrected name and TIN belong to the same recipient and that the form type remains appropriate.
Do not create a second original return with the corrected TIN while leaving the original record active. That can produce duplicate reporting and an unresolved erroneous record.

Wrong payment amount
Correct the affected payment field through the portal. Check related totals and codes before submitting; changing an amount can make a previously selected code or indicator inconsistent with the record.
Wrong code or indicator
Use the same one-step workflow to change an incorrect code or checkbox-style indicator. Review every field on the form, because the record remains the same information return and does not require a second original form merely because a code changed.
Return filed for a recipient who should not have received one
Select the original record for correction and enter zero in all amount fields. This tells the IRS that the amounts on the erroneous record should no longer be reported. Furnish the recipient a corrected statement reflecting the zero-dollar correction when appropriate and keep documentation explaining why the original filing was removed.
Portal filing versus IRIS Application-to-Application (A2A)
IRIS has a manual Taxpayer Portal workflow and an Application-to-Application (A2A) workflow for software-driven transmissions. Both require a correction rather than a duplicate original, but the record-linking details differ.
| Comparison point | Taxpayer Portal | A2A |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited for | Manual filing and corrections by a business user | Software-generated, repeatable, or high-volume transmissions |
| How a correction starts | Select the original form and click Correct/Replace | Correction message is generated by the transmitting software |
| Original-record linkage | IRIS presents the selected submitted record for correction | Each corrected record must include the original UniqueRecordId |
| Possible trigger | User identifies the error in the portal | IRS error notice, transmitter review, or recipient report can trigger the correction |
| Duplicate risk | Starting a new original instead of using Correct/Replace | Resending the original record instead of referencing its original identifiers |
| Evidence to retain | New transmission, submission, receipt, and status information | Correction response, transmission identifiers, and the original-to-corrected record linkage |
UniqueRecordId requirements for A2A
Publication 5718 requires each corrected A2A record to carry the original UniqueRecordId. That identifier is built from the original receipt, submission, and record identifiers. Your software must preserve those values from the first transmission and place the original UniqueRecordId on the correction.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not submit the original A2A record again as a new original merely because a recipient or internal review found an error. A duplicate can create conflicting information returns and complicate reconciliation. The correction message must point back to the record that was actually filed.

What “submitted” and “confirmed” mean
IRIS filing has several useful records to retain: the original transmission details, the correction transmission details, the submission or receipt identifiers, and the processing status. Save each one when you submit a correction. A screen showing that a form was placed on Unsubmitted Forms is not proof that the correction was filed; submission occurs only after the corrected transmission is sent.
The IRS says an electronically filed 1099 can receive confirmation in as little as 48 hours. That is a published timing statement for receiving an electronically filed 1099, not a guarantee that every correction will be processed within 48 hours. Do not treat the estimate as a deadline or as proof that a correction has been accepted. Check the status available for your transmission and retain the resulting confirmation or error information.
Access, cost, and filing-volume requirements
IRIS access
IRIS is available to businesses of any size at no charge for electronic information-return filing. To use the Taxpayer Portal, you need a five-digit Transmitter Control Code (TCC). Obtain and activate the required access before a filing deadline; discovering that a TCC or account is missing after an error occurs can delay the correction.
Electronic-filing threshold
The IRS states that electronic filing is required at 10 or more information returns under the applicable e-file regulations. Confirm the threshold for the current tax year before filing, because regulatory thresholds and counting rules can change. The 10-return figure should not be treated as a permanent rule for every future year.
Free filing does not remove recordkeeping duties
Although the IRIS service itself is free, the payer remains responsible for accurate records, recipient statements, correction tracking, and proof of submission. Keep the original and corrected identifiers together so an auditor or internal reviewer can follow the history of the record.
Why the paper VOID and CORRECTED boxes do not solve an IRIS error
A paper form’s VOID box is not a repair mechanism for a 1099 that has already been filed through IRIS. The paper instructions use the CORRECTED checkbox for ordinary amount, code, or checkbox errors, but an IRIS-filed return must be corrected in the IRIS channel.

Paper procedures are useful only as context. On paper, a TIN/name error or wrong-form error generally uses a two-step process: first a corrected zero-dollar record, then a new original return with the correct TIN, name, or form type. Do not transfer that paper workflow mechanically to the portal. In IRIS, name and TIN mistakes are generally corrected through the portal’s one-step Correct/Replace process, while a wrong form type still requires the two-step zero-and-ref file approach described above.

Filing a duplicate original
Symptom: You submit a new original 1099 with corrected data but leave the original erroneous record active.
Fix: Use Correct/Replace on the original record. For a wrong form type, submit the zero-dollar correction first, then file the correct form as original. Do not try to solve a data error by adding another original return.
Using VOID after submission
Symptom: You mark a paper copy VOID or assume that a voided copy removes an electronically filed return.
Fix: Ignore the paper VOID approach for an IRIS-submitted return. Start the correction in the portal and submit it as a new transmission.

Correcting the IRS record but not the recipient’s copy
Symptom: The portal shows a correction, but the recipient still has the original 1099.
Fix: Furnish a corrected statement and retain proof of delivery or furnishing according to your normal information-return procedures.

Using the wrong linkage in A2A
Symptom: A software-generated correction does not identify the original record correctly.
Fix: Retrieve the original receipt, submission, and record identifiers and construct the required original UniqueRecordId. Send the correction with that value rather than resubmitting the original record.
A practical correction checklist
- Identify the tax year, form type, recipient, and exact field that is wrong.
- Decide whether the problem is a data error, an erroneously filed recipient record, or a wrong form type.
- For a portal filing, locate the original transmission and select Correct/Replace.
- For a one-step correction, update the record; for an erroneously filed recipient record, zero all amounts.
- For a wrong form type, submit the zero-dollar correction and then the correct form as an original return.
- For A2A, include the original UniqueRecordId built from the original receipt, submission, and record identifiers.
- Review all fields before submission, not just the field that first drew attention.
- Submit the correction as a new transmission and save every identifier and status message.
- Furnish the recipient a corrected statement.
- Keep the original filing, correction, recipient statement, and submission evidence together.
When to correct
Make the correction as soon as you discover the error. Prompt action reduces the time that an incorrect amount, TIN, name, code, indicator, or form type remains associated with the recipient. Do not wait for a later filing cycle when the information is already known to be wrong.
If the error was identified through an IRS notice, a recipient report, or an internal review, use that information to determine the affected record and preserve the notice or review record with the correction documentation. For A2A users, those events can be the trigger for generating a correction, but the technical requirement to link the corrected record to its original UniqueRecordId remains.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each type of error
| If the problem is… | Do this in IRIS |
|---|---|
| Name, TIN, amount, code, or indicator | Use Correct/Replace, edit the submitted record, and send one corrected transmission. |
| A 1099 was filed for a recipient who should not have received one | Use Correct/Replace and enter zero for every amount. |
| The wrong 1099 form was used | Zero the erroneous record in a correction, then file the right form as an original return. |
| The return was filed through A2A | Include the original UniqueRecordId and do not resend the original as a duplicate. |
| You are considering a paper VOID | Do not use it to repair an IRIS-filed return; correct the return through IRIS. |
