If a website allows downloading, use the browser’s normal Save Image As command. If that command is unavailable, look for the site’s own download, export, purchase, or licensing route. When you only need a visual reference, capture the image as it appears on the page with Firefox or Edge. A screenshot is a new capture of the displayed page, not automatically the original image file.
Do not treat a technical workaround as permission to reproduce an image. For automated page captures, ScreenshotNeo can render a URL and return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF without setting up a browser.
First decide what you actually need
The correct method depends on whether you need the original file, a visual record, or permission to reuse the work.
| Goal | Best route | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Original image for an authorized use | Site-provided download, account export, purchase page, or permission from the rights holder | The file supplied by the site, usually with its intended format and resolution |
| Personal visual reference or evidence of what was displayed | Firefox or Edge screenshot of the visible page or selected region | A new screenshot of the rendered view; it may differ from the source file’s resolution, format, or metadata |
| Repeatable captures in a script or build process | A screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo | An image or PDF generated from a URL, with controls for viewport, waiting, selectors, and more |
| Publication, advertising, resale, or product distribution | Documented license or direct permission before copying | A defensible authorization record tied to the planned use |
Use the ordinary browser download when it is available
Chrome on a computer
- Open the page containing the image.
- Right-click the image and choose Save Image As. This is the normal instruction in Google Chrome Help’s “Download a file – Computer”.
- Choose a folder and confirm the filename and format shown by the browser.
- Open the saved file to verify that it is the expected image, rather than a small preview, placeholder, or HTML page.
If Save Image As is missing or the download does not start, Chrome’s help documentation recognizes that a site or the image owner may prevent downloads. Do not assume that a disabled command gives you permission to defeat the restriction.

Check the site’s own controls before trying anything else
Look around the image and page for an explicit download button, a high-resolution or original-file link, an account export, a purchase/download page, or licensing information. For a gallery, the download control may appear only after opening the item’s detail view. If the page supplies contact information, ask the owner for the file or for written permission that describes your intended use.
Capture a visible reference with a browser screenshot
A screenshot is appropriate when you need to document what a visitor could see, create a design reference, or preserve a page state. It does not guarantee the original image’s pixel dimensions or file format.
Firefox
- Open the page and scroll until the image is displayed at the size you want to record.
- Use Firefox’s screenshot feature to select a visible region or capture the full web page.
- Choose the option to copy the capture or save it to your computer.
- Open the result and check that the complete image and any needed context are included.
Mozilla documents these choices, including visible-region and full-page captures, in “Take screenshots in Firefox.” Labels and behavior can vary by Firefox version, device, and market.
Microsoft Edge
- Open the page and bring the image into view.
- Open Edge’s Screenshot tool.
- Select the area to capture or use the full-page option when it is offered.
- Copy or save the result, then inspect it at 100% zoom for clipping or overlays.
Microsoft describes the feature at Edge Screenshot Tool. The exact controls may differ across editions and devices.

Understand the quality trade-off
- Displayed size matters: enlarging an image in the page does not recreate detail that was not rendered.
- Page chrome may be included: cookie notices, navigation, or a floating chat control can appear in the capture if they are visible.
- Full-page captures can differ from what you saw: lazy-loaded content, changing banners, and scroll position can affect the result.
- A screenshot is not the source file: it may have different dimensions, compression, color handling, and metadata.
When copying is for reuse, establish permission first
Seeing an image or being able to save a capture does not by itself grant reproduction rights. The relevant answer depends on the image’s author, the site’s license terms, your intended use, and the law where you are located.
The U.S. Copyright Office explains copyright and digital files in its Copyright and Digital Files FAQ and discusses fair-use factors in its Fair Use FAQ. Those pages address U.S. law and do not decide whether a particular use is lawful in another country or in your specific circumstances. If the site gives no license, ask the rights holder or choose an image with clear reuse terms.
A license can allow reuse under conditions such as attribution, restrictions on commercial use, or limits on modifications. For example, the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative explains attribution requirements for its own materials at Use WAI material: Permission to use with attribution. That permission applies to WAI materials, not automatically to images on unrelated websites.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request renders a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete parameter reference.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/page -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/page"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/page' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
Replace the example URL and API key with your own values. The API captures the rendered page; it does not turn a screenshot into the original downloadable image file or grant a license to republish that image.
Controls that matter for protected or dynamic pages
- Capture the full page, including lazy-loaded images, or capture one element with a CSS selector.
- Choose dark mode, one of 12 device presets, any viewport, and a retina scale.
- Wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle; click an element before capture when a page requires an interaction.
- Apply custom CSS or JavaScript and hide selected elements before the shot.
- Block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types that obscure the target.
- Supply custom headers, cookies, a user agent, or an Authorization header for pages you are authorized to access.
- Set timezone or geolocation, use a transparent background, and resize the output.
- Cache captures with a TTL you choose, create signed links for public
<img>tags, run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, or submit up to 100 URLs in one bulk call. - Use the usage API and OpenAPI specification for integration work. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration.
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the result in the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

“Save Image As” is not shown
Confirm that you right-clicked the image itself rather than surrounding text or a page background. If the command is still absent, use the site’s download or permission route. A screenshot is suitable for a visible reference, not a substitute for an authorized original file.

The screenshot contains a banner or chat widget
Dismiss the element before capturing, choose a tighter selection, or use ScreenshotNeo’s cleanup controls to remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. For a manual capture, inspect the entire frame before saving.
The result is clipped or missing content
For a browser screenshot, scroll to the intended area and verify that the image has finished loading. For ScreenshotNeo, use full-page capture, wait for a selector or network idle, and enable lazy-image loading when the page requires it.
The image looks soft
A screenshot records the rendered pixels. Increase the browser display scale or choose a larger viewport and retina scale in ScreenshotNeo, but do not expect those settings to restore detail absent from the page’s displayed image. Request the original from the owner when exact resolution matters.
The automated request returns an error or a blank page
Check the URL, authentication, and any required cookies or headers. In ScreenshotNeo, provide the headers, cookies, user agent, or Authorization value that you are allowed to use, and add a wait condition for content that appears after page load. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and timeouts are reported as non-clean results rather than billed shots.

Pause the reuse, record the page URL and license terms, and contact the rights holder. A screenshot can document what was visible while you seek permission; it does not resolve the underlying copyright question.

A practical decision checklist
- Need the original file? Use the site’s download, account, purchase, or licensing process.
- Need only a visual record? Capture the displayed region or full page in Firefox or Edge.
- Need repeatable, unattended captures? Use an API and configure viewport, waits, selectors, and authentication deliberately.
- Need to publish or distribute the image? Confirm a license or obtain written permission before using the file or screenshot.
- After saving, open the result, check dimensions and cropping, and keep the permission record with the asset.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the image is behind a login or paywall?
Use the account’s own download or export control after signing in. If no such control exists, ask the site or rights holder for access; do not bypass the login or payment barrier.
Does knowing an image’s URL give me permission to copy it?
No. A URL identifies where the image is hosted, but permission still depends on the license, the rights holder, your intended use, and applicable law.
Can I automate captures of many pages?
Yes. ScreenshotNeo supports asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call; configure access and waiting rules for the pages you are authorized to capture.
