How to copy and paste on Windows 11 or Windows 10
Using keyboard shortcuts
- Select the text, file, folder, or other item.
- Press Ctrl + C.
- Click or tap the location where you want to place the copy.
- Press Ctrl + V.
To move rather than duplicate an item, select it and press Ctrl + X. Open the destination and press Ctrl + V. Microsoft also lists Shift + Insert as an alternative paste shortcut.
Using the right-click menu
- Select the item.
- Right-click it and select Copy.
- Open the destination folder, document, or app.
- Right-click where the item belongs and select Paste.
The available commands depend on the app and the selected content. For example, a website may prevent copying text, and a folder may not allow you to paste a particular file type.

Choose an older copied item with Clipboard history
Normal Ctrl + V pastes the most recently copied item. Windows Clipboard history lets you select from several recent entries:
- Press Windows key + V.
- If Windows asks you to enable the feature, select Turn on.
- Select the text, image, or other entry you want to paste.
You can also enable it through Start > Settings > System > Clipboard. Clipboard history is not enabled by default.
Windows Clipboard history stores up to 25 entries. Each entry can be up to 4 MB, and supported formats include text, HTML, and bitmap. The history is cleared when the PC restarts, except for pinned entries.
To remove one entry, open Windows key + V, select See more (…) beside it, and choose Delete. To remove everything, select Clear all in the Clipboard history panel or use Start > Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear.

Paste without formatting
In applications that support it, press Ctrl + Shift + V to paste plain text without the original font, colors, or other formatting. Microsoft notes that this shortcut is not supported by every Windows application. If it does nothing, look for a menu command such as Paste as plain text or Keep Text Only.
Sync copied text between Windows devices
- Open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Turn on Clipboard history across your devices.
- Choose Automatically sync text that I copy or Manually sync text that I copy.
The devices must use the same Microsoft account or work account. With manual syncing, open Windows key + V and select the sync control on the clipboard item. This feature syncs text; it should not be treated as a way to synchronize every clipboard format.

Windows 10 still supports ordinary copy and paste, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. It no longer receives free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes from Microsoft.
How to copy and paste on a Mac
Using keyboard shortcuts
- Select the text or item.
- Press Command + C.
- Click where you want to paste it.
- Press Command + V.
To move selected text or an item, use Command + X, then Command + V. If you paste something accidentally, press Command + Z to undo it.

On a Windows keyboard connected to a Mac, Apple recommends trying the Ctrl key or the Windows logo key in place of Command, depending on the keyboard and configuration.
Using menus or a shortcut menu
Select the content and use Edit > Copy. Click in the destination and use Edit > Paste. You can also Control-click or right-click the selection, choose Copy, then Control-click or right-click at the destination and choose Paste.
If Paste is dimmed, the app or the selected location does not accept the copied content.
Paste and match the destination style
To paste text using the destination’s font, color, size, and style, press Option + Shift + Command + V. You can also choose Edit > Paste and Match Style.

macOS Tahoe or later includes Clipboard history for browsing recently copied text, images, links, and files. The usual Command + V shortcut still pastes the current clipboard item. Clipboard behavior can vary by app; for some files and folders, macOS provides moving or dragging options instead of a conventional Cut command.
How to copy and paste on an iPhone
Copy and paste text
- Double-tap a word to select it.
- Triple-tap a paragraph to select the paragraph.
- For a custom selection, double-tap and hold the first word, then drag the selection handles.
- Tap Copy.
- Open the destination app.
- Tap where the text should go.
- Tap Paste.
Choose Cut instead of Copy if you want to remove the selected text from its original location.
Use three-finger gestures
When text is selected, you can use these editing gestures in apps that support iPhone text editing:
- Copy: pinch closed with three fingers.
- Cut: pinch closed with three fingers twice.
- Paste: pinch open with three fingers.
Copy an image
- Touch and hold the image.
- Tap Copy.
- Open the destination app.
- Tap where the image should go.
- Tap Paste.
Whether an image can be pasted depends on both the source and destination apps. A chat app may accept an image, for example, while a particular form field may accept text only.

Apple’s Live Text feature can recognize text in supported photos and videos:
- Tap the Detect Text button.
- Touch and hold the detected text.
- Adjust the selection handles.
- Tap Copy Text.
Live Text is not available in every region or language.

The iPhone clipboard is temporary. Copied content remains available for a short time and can be replaced as soon as you copy something else. iPhone does not generally provide a permanent, user-browsable clipboard history like Windows.

The exact controls vary by Android version, phone manufacturer, keyboard, and app. The standard procedure is:
- Touch and hold the text or item.
- Adjust the selection handles if necessary.
- Tap Copy.
- Open the destination app.
- Touch and hold inside the destination text field.
- Tap Paste.
If you are working in Google Docs, select the content, tap Copy, touch and hold at the destination, and tap Paste.
Use clipboard history with Gboard
- Open an app where you can type.
- Tap a text field to open Gboard.
- Tap Clipboard at the top of the keyboard. You may need to open the keyboard’s toolbar first.
- Tap a previous item to paste it.
- To retain an item, touch and hold it and tap Pin.
Gboard clears unpinned clipboard history shortly after it was last used. Pinned text is retained by that cleanup process. Gboard may also identify portions of copied text, such as email addresses, URLs, phone numbers, and numerical dates. Availability varies by country, region, and language.
Use the clipboard on a Samsung Galaxy
On supported Galaxy devices, touch and hold inside a text field, then tap Clipboard to choose previously copied content. Tap Paste to insert the current item. The feature and its exact location depend on the device and One UI version.
There is no single clipboard-history screen shared by every Android phone. If Copy is missing, the app may prevent selection or copying. If Paste is missing, touch and hold directly inside an editable text field rather than on a label, image, or other non-editable area.

Copy and paste between devices
Apple Universal Clipboard
Universal Clipboard can transfer text, images, photos, videos, and other content between a nearby Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro.
For it to work, the devices need to:
- Use the same Apple Account.
- Have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
- Have Handoff enabled.
- Meet Apple’s Continuity requirements.
- Not use a VPN that blocks local networking.
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity or Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff, depending on the system wording. On Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff, then enable Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
Universal Clipboard is temporary: the copied content remains available briefly or until another item replaces it.
Windows device syncing
On Windows, configure cross-device copying at Start > Settings > System > Clipboard. Use the same Microsoft or work account on each device and enable clipboard history across devices. Windows primarily supports synchronized text, not every type of clipboard content.

Why copy and paste is not working

What is the shortcut for copy and paste on Windows?
Select the item and press Ctrl + C to copy it. Click the destination and press Ctrl + V to paste. Use Ctrl + X instead of Ctrl + C when you want to move the item.
What is the Mac equivalent of Ctrl + V?
The standard Mac paste shortcut is Command + V. Copy uses Command + C, and cut uses Command + X.
How do I see previously copied items on Android?

Why can’t I paste on my phone or computer?
