The reliable way to handle a wildfire in Rescue Ops: Wildfire is to rescue people first, then build a containment plan that your crew, vehicles and water supply can sustain. In co-op, give one player ownership of civilian searches, another control of the engine and water, another responsibility for the fire edge, and one person the job of watching the map and calling support. In solo play, perform the same jobs in that order rather than chasing flames immediately.
The game combines civilian rescue, first aid, evacuation, fire suppression, vehicle positioning and aerial support. Its fire spreads procedurally according to wind, terrain, vegetation and weather, so a plan that worked one minute ago can become unsafe after a weather or fuel change. The official feature descriptions are available from the developer, the Steam listing and the Epic Games Store listing.
What your team should do first
When a mission starts, resist the instinct to drive straight at the largest flame. The opening priority described in the Steam listing is to locate trapped or injured civilians, assess their condition, provide first aid and coordinate evacuation before the fire closes in. That gives the team a clear first assignment even when another player is already approaching the fire line.

- Scout and triage. Find civilians, identify the direction of spread, note terrain bottlenecks, locate nearby water and check whether vehicles can reach and leave the area.
- Rescue before suppression. Search, treat and evacuate people while the rest of the team reports changing fire behavior.
- Choose a line to hold. Reduce fuel with vegetation clearing and decide whether an attack line, defense line or tactical backfire will create the safest useful boundary.
- Position the engine and hoses. Keep an exit route open, avoid unnecessary smoke exposure and confirm how the vehicle will return for water.
- Suppress deliberately. Use short, purposeful hose operations and report remaining water frequently instead of emptying the tank in one long attack.
- Reassess after every major action. Wind, terrain, vegetation and weather can alter the fire’s path and invalidate the previous line.
This sequence is a coordination framework rather than a named in-game class system. It prevents the most common co-op failure: two players searching the same area while nobody controls water, the escape route or the next containment move.

Assign clear responsibilities in co-op
The game supports solo play and co-op for up to four players, with campaign and sandbox modes listed on Steam. The following assignments turn the published task list into communication ownership. Players can swap jobs, but every job should have one person responsible at any moment.
| Role | Primary responsibility | Critical information to call out |
|---|---|---|
| Incident coordinator and map watcher | Track objectives, fire direction, wind, terrain, vegetation, weather changes and available support. | Which edge is accelerating, where the fallback route is, and when outside support must be requested. |
| Rescue lead | Search for civilians, assess injuries, provide first aid and coordinate evacuation. | Civilian location, condition, evacuation path and whether smoke or flames are closing the route. |
| Engine and water lead | Position the fire engine, route hoses, monitor tank levels and plan refills from tanks or ponds. | Remaining water, refill distance, hose reach and the vehicle’s exit path. |
| Containment lead | Clear vegetation, prepare tactical backfires or attack/defense lines and work the fire edge. | Where fuel has been removed, where the line can hold and which section needs help next. |
| Air-support caller | Request water bombers, helicopter insertion or extraction, helicopter water delivery and other available support. | The exact fire edge or crew position where an aircraft action will buy the most time. |
Two-player teams
With two players, combine the coordinator with the engine and water lead. The second player handles rescue and containment, switching from civilian work to fire-edge preparation once evacuation is secure. The coordinator should make support calls and keep announcing water status while driving or laying hose.
Three-player teams
Keep rescue separate from engine and water management. The third player becomes the containment lead and can prepare a line while the other two finish evacuation and establish a supplied position.
Four-player teams
Use all four assignments. The map watcher should not become absorbed in hose work; their value is noticing a wind or terrain change early enough for the team to reposition. The air-support caller can be the coordinator’s deputy, but both players must agree who has final authority for a request so aircraft are not sent to an obsolete location.
Solo play
Use the same order as co-op, but pause mentally between jobs: identify civilians, complete urgent treatment and evacuation, inspect the fire direction, set a line, then place the engine and begin suppression. Keep checking the map and water indicator whenever you finish an interaction or move the vehicle.
How to run the opening rescue
Locate and assess civilians
Start by finding every civilian marker or visible person that the objective identifies. The rescue lead should report whether each person is trapped, injured or able to move. Do not assume a nearby civilian is safe because the flames are not yet visible; the procedural fire can advance through changing fuel and wind conditions.
Provide first aid before moving on
Complete the required first-aid interaction before directing an evacuation. A player who only reaches a civilian and then leaves has not completed the mission’s stated rescue priority. While treatment is under way, the coordinator should watch the nearest fire edge and identify an alternate route in case the direct path becomes blocked.

Evacuate along a reversible route
Choose a path that still allows the team to retreat if smoke or flames cut off the first route. The engine lead should avoid parking across that path. If a helicopter insertion or extraction option is available, reserve it for a civilian or crew position that cannot be reached safely by ground rather than spending it on a convenient shortcut.
Build a containment line instead of chasing flames
Containment is about shaping where the fire can go. The suppression toolkit includes vegetation clearing, firefighting tools, tactical backfires, hose management, water conservation and breathing masks. The official listings confirm these tools, but they do not publish a universal formula for the best backfire location or line width. Treat the following as situational guidance, not fixed game rules.
Clear fuel where it changes the decision
Vegetation clearing is most valuable when it removes fuel from a boundary the team can actually defend. A short cleared strip near an accessible road or terrain bottleneck can be more useful than a larger strip that leaves the engine trapped on the wrong side. Have the containment lead announce the intended hold point before clearing so the rest of the team knows which edge is being protected.
Use a tactical backfire deliberately
A tactical backfire can consume fuel ahead of the main front and buy time, but it also introduces another active fire. Use it only when the team understands the wind and has a defensible place to monitor the result. Do not start one beside civilians, a vehicle with no escape route or a crew already exposed to smoke. The coordinator should announce the expected direction and an abort or fallback location before the action begins.
Choose attack or defense based on the situation
An attack line aims to work directly on the advancing edge. A defense line gives the team a prepared boundary and time to wait for the front or protect an evacuation route. Ground support can help establish attack or defense lines. Select the option that matches water, access and civilian exposure rather than treating an aggressive attack as automatically better.
Place the engine and manage hoses safely
Park for an exit, not just reach
Vehicles can be damaged by flames, rough terrain or reckless driving. Park on terrain the engine can leave, keep the front or rear pointed toward a usable route and avoid blocking the only path to civilians or water. If the fire reaches the vehicle’s side of the line, the crew should be able to retreat without turning around in smoke or crossing the active edge.
Plan the refill loop before the first long attack
The game treats water as a managed resource. Before committing to a sustained hose operation, identify the nearest tank or pond, estimate the driving route and tell the containment lead when the engine must withdraw. A long attack with no refill plan can leave the team at the most dangerous moment with neither suppression capacity nor a safe way to recover it.

Use short attack windows
Apply water to the section that threatens the line or the evacuation route, then pause to check the tank and fire movement. Frequent water-status calls are more useful than a single announcement after the tank is nearly empty. If the line is not changing the fire’s behavior, stop spending water and return to clearing fuel, repositioning or requesting support.

Steam warns that smoke can intoxicate firefighters and recommends managing positioning and using a breathing mask. The coordinator should call out smoke direction before sending a player into a low-visibility area. If a crew member is exposed, move toward cleaner air and a safe route rather than insisting on one more hose pass.
Watch the procedural fire model
Rescue Ops: Wildfire models spread using wind, terrain, vegetation and weather. These inputs make the map watcher a practical necessity, even though the game does not describe that responsibility as a formal character class.
- Wind: Recheck the downwind edge after a change; a previously safe flank may become the front.
- Terrain: Ridges, slopes, roads and access points affect both spread and vehicle movement. A line is useful only if the crew can reach and defend it.
- Vegetation: Treat dense fuel as a reason to clear or reposition before the front arrives, not as a place to spend water indefinitely.
- Weather: A weather-driven change can alter visibility, spread speed or the usefulness of an existing line. Announce the change and reassess objectives.
After each major action—civilian evacuation, backfire, large cleared strip, vehicle relocation or aircraft drop—ask three questions: Which edge is moving now? Can the crew still retreat? Do we have enough water to hold the selected line?
When to call aircraft, water delivery or ground support
Escalation is most effective before the frontline becomes unsupplied or unsafe. The Steam and Epic listings describe water bombers that drop water or retardant, helicopters for rapid insertion or extraction, helicopter water delivery, water deliveries when supplies run low and ground support for attack or defense lines.
Water bomber or retardant drop
Request a bomber when a broad or fast-moving edge is outpacing the crew’s prepared line, especially when the aircraft can protect a civilian route or buy time for a refill. Give the air-support caller a precise edge and direction rather than a general “drop on the fire” instruction. The drop should support a ground plan; it is not a substitute for assigning a line or escape route.
Helicopter insertion or extraction
Use a helicopter when a civilian or firefighter must reach or leave an area that ground access cannot safely serve. Confirm the landing or extraction area is clear enough for the operation and tell the coordinator where the crew will regroup afterward.

Helicopter water delivery
Helicopter water delivery is a useful bridge when the engine cannot reach a refill point without abandoning a critical line. Call it before the tank is empty, identify the threatened section and continue preparing a fallback in case the delivery cannot hold the edge by itself.
Water deliveries
If supplies are running low, request a delivery while the engine still has enough water for a controlled withdrawal. Waiting until the tank is empty can force the crew to cross the fire or leave civilians unprotected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGround support
Request ground support when the team needs a larger attack or defense line than the current crew can prepare, or when the fire’s spread threatens to outpace manual clearing. Coordinate the support location with the map watcher so arriving units reinforce the current plan rather than an abandoned one.
Fast attack versus defensive containment
Neither approach is universally correct. Compare the situation using the same factors before committing:
| Decision factor | Fast attack is favored when… | Defensive containment is favored when… |
|---|---|---|
| Civilian exposure | People are close to a reachable edge and a short operation can open an evacuation route. | Evacuation needs a protected corridor and direct flame work would expose rescuers. |
| Fire direction | The active front is identifiable and the crew can approach without losing its retreat path. | Wind or terrain makes the front unpredictable and a flank or bottleneck offers a safer hold point. |
| Water and refill distance | The engine has a nearby refill route and enough water for repeated short attacks. | Refill distance is long, supplies are uncertain or outside water support is needed. |
| Terrain and vehicle access | The engine can enter, turn and leave on stable ground. | Rough terrain, blocked roads or a narrow route make a fixed line safer than a deep push. |
| Smoke and crew safety | Visibility and breathing conditions remain manageable with masks and an open exit. | Smoke is accumulating or the escape route could close behind the crew. |
| Support arrival time | No aircraft or ground support is needed to prevent immediate loss of the line. | Support can arrive before the fire reaches the planned boundary and materially extend the hold. |
Use the table as a decision checklist, not a scorecard. If civilian exposure or crew safety is deteriorating, those considerations override a desire to extinguish the largest visible flame.

The fire crosses your line
Stop treating the old boundary as the objective. Announce the breach, move crews to the fallback route, and choose a new line based on current wind, terrain and available water. Request air or ground support if the new edge is advancing faster than the team can prepare.

The engine is trapped or damaged
Prioritize crew movement and civilian evacuation over vehicle recovery. Do not drive recklessly through flames or rough terrain to save a damaged engine. The coordinator should identify another access route, a water delivery option or helicopter extraction if available.

The crew is running out of water
Stop nonessential hose work, report the remaining supply and begin the refill or delivery plan. Hold the most important section—usually the evacuation route or a line protecting civilians—while the engine lead restores supply.
Smoke is intoxicating the crew
Use breathing masks where appropriate, withdraw toward cleaner air and communicate the movement so nobody is left behind. Re-enter only after the coordinator confirms a viable route and the containment lead identifies a task worth the exposure.
Two players are duplicating work
State the four ownership questions over voice chat: Who has civilian rescue? Who has water? Who is watching the fire edge? Who is calling support? Reassign one player immediately instead of continuing parallel searches or overlapping hose work.

Campaign and sandbox planning
Campaign missions add objectives, terrain and tactical challenges. Read the objective before choosing an attack route; a technically successful suppression action can still leave a civilian, evacuation or support task unfinished.
Sandbox mode uses dynamic objectives and procedural fire behavior for repeatability. It is useful for practicing one responsibility at a time: have one player manage water and vehicle exits while another experiments with cleared strips and backfires, then reverse jobs. Because the fire inputs change, judge a tactic by whether it preserves a safe, supplied line rather than expecting identical timing every run.
PC requirements and platform context
The official site presents a PC release. Steam lists Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM, an RTX 3060 or RX 5700 XT minimum GPU class and 50 GB of available storage. These are publisher-listed requirements and may change before release, so check the current store page before installing or upgrading.
| Requirement | Publisher-listed minimum |

| Operating system | Windows 11 |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA RTX 3060 or AMD RX 5700 XT class |
| Storage | 50 GB available space |
A repeatable team callout script
Short, consistent callouts reduce confusion when the fire changes quickly. Use this sequence at the start of every mission and after a major shift:
- “Civilians: locations, injuries and evacuation route.”
- “Fire: current front, wind direction, fuel and terrain bottleneck.”
- “Line: attack or defense, cleared section and fallback.”
- “Water: tank level, refill route and next delivery request.”
- “Safety: smoke condition, vehicle exit and crew position.”
- “Support: aircraft or ground resource, target edge and timing.”
After the callout, each player performs only their assigned job until the next update. That rhythm keeps rescue, containment, supply and safety visible at the same time.
