To cool a room without air conditioning, block direct sun before it enters, keep windows closed while outdoor air is hotter than indoors, and open them only when outdoor air is cooler and safe to breathe. Use a fan only within temperature limits, cool your body, reduce heat from cooking, and move to an air-conditioned public place if your home remains dangerously hot.
How can you cool a room without AC?
Work in this order: keep heat out during the day, release indoor heat when conditions outside improve, and cool yourself rather than relying on a fan to lower the room’s temperature. These steps can make a room more comfortable, but they cannot guarantee a safe indoor temperature during extreme heat.
1. Block sunlight before it heats the room
Before direct sun reaches a window, close curtains, drapes, roller shades, or blinds on that side of the home. Reflective window coverings can help reduce solar heat entering through glass. If feasible, exterior awnings or louvers are more effective at reducing incoming heat than coverings fitted inside the window, according to the U.S. EPA’s extreme-heat indoor-air guidance. Ready.gov also recommends reflective window products and weather-stripping; weather-stripping can help limit hot air entering through gaps.
2. Keep windows closed when it is hotter outside
Compare indoor and outdoor conditions rather than leaving windows open all day. The EPA advises: “In general, if the air outside is hotter than the air inside, close the windows.” Keep sun-facing coverings in place while the outdoor air is hotter. When outdoors becomes cooler than indoors, open windows if outdoor air quality and household safety allow. Once the room has cooled, close the windows again to retain the cooler air.

Check local air-quality information before ventilating, especially if smoke, dust, or other pollution is present. The CDC explains how to use the HeatRisk Tool and Air Quality Index. If outdoor air is polluted, opening windows may bring that pollution indoors; follow local health advisories and prioritize a cleaner, cooler place if available.
3. Reduce heat made inside the home
Use the stove and oven as little as possible during hot periods. Choose meals that require less cooking, and avoid running heat-producing appliances unnecessarily. This will not cool a room that is already dangerously hot, but it can reduce additional heat entering the space.
Is it safe to use a fan when it’s very hot?
A fan moves air; it does not lower the air temperature or by itself prevent heat illness. The CDC’s general guidance is to use indoor fans only when the indoor temperature is below 90°F. At or above 90°F, do not depend on a fan for cooling—seek a cooler location and use other ways to cool your body.
The EPA gives a separate caution: “Do not use an electric fan in a closed room.” It also advises against using electric fans for cooling when room temperature is in the mid-90s°F or higher. These agency statements use different wording and thresholds; they are not a single shared cutoff. In particular, do not interpret the EPA’s higher-temperature warning as permission to rely on a fan between 90°F and the mid-90s°F. Follow the CDC’s below-90°F limit for indoor fan use.

Built-in 9-color ambient lighting creates a relaxing atmosphere for bedrooms or gaming rooms. Dynamic light and mist synchronization enhances the cooling experience while adding modern style to your space.
When the room is below that limit and outdoor air is cooler, a fan can help move air through the room—for example, by exhausting warmer indoor air or drawing cooler air inside. Use it only if ventilation is appropriate for outdoor air quality and conditions. If the room is 90°F or hotter, prioritize leaving for a cooler place rather than trying to solve the heat with a fan.
How can you cool yourself while the room is hot?
- Drink more water than usual; do not wait until you feel thirsty, as the CDC advises.
- Take a cool shower or bath.
- Wear lightweight clothing when practical and rest in the coolest available part of the home.
- Check on household members and neighbors who may have difficulty recognizing, communicating, or responding to heat.
Older adults, infants and children, and people with chronic conditions can face greater risk from heat. The CDC provides specific information about heat and adults aged 65 and older, as well as general heat-health guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you leave home for a cooler place?
If the room remains very hot or you cannot cool down, spend time in an air-conditioned public place if one is accessible. The CDC says even a few hours in an air-conditioned location can lower heat-related health risk. Options may include a library, mall, community facility, or designated cooling center; availability and opening hours vary locally.
To find a nearby cooling center, check with your local health department or emergency management agency, and confirm that the location is open before traveling. If you need help getting there, contact local services or someone you trust rather than staying in a dangerously hot space without support.

What heat-illness symptoms need medical attention?
The CDC’s page for people without air conditioning says to seek medical care immediately for symptoms including muscle cramps, headache, nausea, or vomiting. Heat-related illness can worsen; do not wait for a home-cooling measure or fan to work if someone is becoming ill. The EPA advises calling 911 in case of heat-related illness. For severe symptoms or an emergency, call 911.
For the CDC’s advice specific to households without air conditioning, see Heat and People without Air Conditioning.
Where can you look for help with cooling costs?
In the United States, contact your state or local energy-assistance office to ask about the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and any cooling-related assistance. Eligibility, covered expenses, application periods, and available funds depend on the location and program rules; do not assume that assistance is guaranteed. Your local health department may also know about cooling centers or other heat-safety resources.
